For most homes with reliable Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 7 is enough—and there is little reason to replace a working router just to get Wi-Fi 8. If you need an upgrade now, Wi-Fi 7 is a current, standards-based option. Wi-Fi 8 routers are beginning to appear, but the standardization process is still underway and compatible phones and laptops are not yet broadly available. Choose based on the problem you need to solve, not the generation number alone.
Wi-Fi 8 is still being standardized
Wi-Fi 8 is associated with IEEE project P802.11bn, also known as Ultra High Reliability (UHR). In the IEEE 802.11 Working Group’s timeline entry dated September 2, 2026, draft D2.00 was listed at 77% progress. That figure describes a standards project milestone—not how ready routers are, how well they perform, or how close a retail product is to certification. The timeline includes predicted milestones into 2028, which are estimates rather than delivery guarantees. IEEE 802.11 Working Group project timelines

Qualcomm projects final IEEE approval in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification in January 2028. Those are Qualcomm’s projections, not confirmed dates from the IEEE timeline. Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 8 as progressing through the IEEE 802.11bn process. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview
Early routers can reach stores before the standard and the wider device ecosystem are mature. TechRadar reported in September 2026 that TP-Link had launched its first Wi-Fi 8 routers, with retail availability expected later that year; its report said compatible phones and laptops were expected the following year. A separate TechRadar report on October 4, 2026, described an early Wi-Fi 8 gaming router while noting that compatible clients were not yet on the market. Product availability can change quickly, so check the specific router and device before buying. TechRadar’s September 2026 Wi-Fi 8 report · TechRadar’s October 2026 gaming-router report

What Wi-Fi 7 already offers
Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be, the Extremely High Throughput amendment. IEEE’s 802.11-2024 standard page says the amendment enables at least one mode capable of a maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s at the MAC data service access point. That is a standard-level capability, not a promise of 30 Gbit/s internet service or a typical home speed. Your broadband plan, router, client device, distance, interference, and network setup all affect what you experience. IEEE 802.11-2024
Qualcomm identifies Wi-Fi 7 capabilities including 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets supported devices use multiple bands simultaneously. Whether you can use these features depends on both ends of the connection: a Wi-Fi 7 router does not give an older phone or laptop Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview

Wi-Fi 8 is not simply a faster Wi-Fi 7
The distinction is not that Wi-Fi 8 necessarily raises the top speed for every user. Qualcomm presents Wi-Fi 8’s design goal as better performance in difficult conditions—such as dense networks, coverage edges, and mobility—through a focus on reliability and responsiveness. Current product reporting likewise describes Wi-Fi 8 as not being a raw-speed jump over Wi-Fi 7. These are design goals and vendor or reporting characterizations, not proof that every home will see a measurable improvement. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview · TechRadar’s September 2026 Wi-Fi 8 report

A router’s Wi-Fi 8 label also does not make existing clients Wi-Fi 8 devices. Early products may have other useful features, and one report describes improvements to current Wi-Fi 7 clients on a specific early router. That is a product-specific report, not a guarantee that an early Wi-Fi 8 router will improve every Wi-Fi 7 device. TechRadar’s October 2026 gaming-router report

Decide whether to upgrade now or wait
Consider Wi-Fi 7 now if your network has a current problem
A Wi-Fi 7 router is a reasonable option if your existing router is obsolete or inadequate, or if you want current Wi-Fi 7 features for devices that support them. Before choosing one, match the product to the actual need:
- Coverage: If rooms have weak or no signal, compare mesh support or wired access-point options. A newer generation label alone does not guarantee that a router will eliminate dead zones.
- Capacity or congestion: If many devices compete for wireless airtime, check that the router and your clients support the features you want to use. The benefit depends on your household and network conditions.
- Wired connectivity: Compare the WAN and LAN ports with your broadband service and wired devices; wireless generation does not determine whether the router has the ports you need.
- Client compatibility: List the phones, laptops, and other devices you expect to benefit. A client must support the relevant generation and features to use them.
- Budget and support: Compare price, firmware support, and the features of the whole router rather than treating “Wi-Fi 7” as a guarantee of better results.
Wait if your current Wi-Fi is adequate
If you have no pressing coverage, capacity, or connectivity issue, waiting is reasonable. It gives the Wi-Fi 8 standard and certification process more time to progress and compatible client products more time to appear. The timing is uncertain: IEEE project milestones and vendor projections are not guarantees of when a particular router, phone, or laptop will be available.

Assess an early Wi-Fi 8 router on what it does today
An early Wi-Fi 8 router may make sense if you knowingly want an early-adopter product and its present-day ports, mesh or backhaul design, firmware support, and price work for your network independently of future Wi-Fi 8 clients. TechRadar has reported an early-adopter premium, but that does not establish the price or value of every model. Look for product-specific evidence rather than assuming the new generation will improve all of your existing devices. TechRadar’s October 2026 gaming-router report

| Situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your current Wi-Fi is reliable and meets your needs | Keep it for now | There is no established reason to replace an adequate router just for the Wi-Fi 8 label. |
| You need a router upgrade now and have compatible Wi-Fi 7 devices | Compare Wi-Fi 7 routers | Wi-Fi 7 is based on a published IEEE amendment and already has defined capabilities. |
| You want certified Wi-Fi 8 products and compatible clients | Wait for the ecosystem to mature | Standardization and broad client availability are still developing; projected dates can change. |
| You are considering an early Wi-Fi 8 router | Judge its current hardware and support on their own merits | Future Wi-Fi 8 benefits for existing clients are not assured, and reports about early models are product-specific. |
Will your phone or laptop benefit from a Wi-Fi 8 router?
Only if that device supports Wi-Fi 8 can it connect using Wi-Fi 8 capabilities. A Wi-Fi 8 router can still serve older Wi-Fi devices, but they connect using capabilities they support; the router’s generation label does not upgrade their wireless hardware. Because compatible clients were not broadly available in the product reporting cited here, check the specifications of both the router and each client rather than buying on the assumption that current devices will gain Wi-Fi 8 features.
