Not always. MMORPG payment rules vary by game: some let you play the base game for free, some require a subscription for ongoing access, and others sell optional memberships or expansions. A “Premium” or “Complete Edition” label does not by itself mean future play time is included. Check the publisher’s current terms for your game, platform, account and edition before paying.
What “free,” “subscription” and “premium” mean
These labels describe different payment models, and a game can combine more than one:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Free-to-play: You can start without paying, though the free account may have restrictions or paid additions.
- Buy-to-play: You buy access to a game or edition. That purchase does not necessarily include every expansion or future content release.
- Subscription required: A recurring payment is needed to continue playing the covered game or mode after any trial or included play period.
- Optional premium membership: A recurring membership adds benefits but is not required for basic access. Some benefits may last only while the membership is active.
Before purchasing, determine whether you are paying to start, to continue playing, to unlock particular content, or for extra membership benefits. Those are separate costs.

| Game | Starting and continued access | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars 2 | The official support page says players can sign up and play the core game for free. Players can remain on a free account or make a one-time expansion purchase without needing to spend again just to continue playing. Official Guild Wars 2 support | Free accounts have restrictions compared with upgraded accounts. Review the free-account details to see whether the limits on communication or account features matter to you. |
| World of Warcraft | Blizzard says most modes require an active subscription, with a limited Free Trial exception for some modern-game content. Blizzard’s modes and versions information | Check whether the specific mode you want is included in the trial or requires an active subscription. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Square Enix says Starter and Complete Edition purchases include 30 days of free play; a subscription is required to continue afterward. Final Fantasy XIV product information | The product information also lists a platform-specific Xbox Game Pass plan requirement. Check the current terms for your platform, account and region. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | ESO Plus is an optional membership, not the price of entry to the base game. Its benefits include access to Crown Store DLC game packs while the membership lasts. ESO Plus membership information | ESO says DLC game packs are not required to access the full version of the base game. Check its DLC access guidance if you are deciding whether to buy a pack. |
Does buying an edition include ongoing play time?
Not necessarily. An edition purchase may unlock the game or bundle expansions, while a subscription may still be needed after an included trial or play period. Final Fantasy XIV’s product information, for example, states that Starter and Complete Edition purchasers receive 30 days of free play and must subscribe afterward to continue. Read the edition’s terms for the length and conditions of any included play time rather than assuming “Complete” or “Premium” means unlimited access.
Are expansions or DLC required?
That depends on what you want to play. An expansion can be optional for access to a base game but necessary for its own areas, story or features. The Elder Scrolls Online says DLC game packs are not required to access the full base game; ESO Plus offers access to Crown Store DLC game packs while the membership is active. Check the game’s current content and edition descriptions to see exactly what an expansion unlocks and whether a membership benefit ends when you stop paying.

What to verify before you pay
- Find the official page for your exact game and platform. Publisher terms may differ by edition, account type, region or platform.
- Check the cost to start. Is the base game free, or must you buy an edition?
- Read the trial terms. Confirm what content it includes and when the trial or included play period ends.
- Check ongoing access. Does continued play require a recurring subscription, or can you keep playing without one?
- Separate access from content. Find out whether expansions and DLC are optional for the base game or needed for the content you want.
- Inspect premium benefits. If a membership is optional, check what it adds and which benefits stop when membership expires.
- Confirm account and platform conditions. Look for free-account restrictions, platform subscriptions and other requirements that apply to your setup.
Do not rely on the genre label or edition name alone. The decisive details are the publisher’s current terms for the particular game, the content you want and the platform you will use.
