Do You Need a Sound Card for Headphones or Speakers?

A separate sound card is optional for most headphone and speaker users. Find out what built-in audio handles, how to troubleshoot no sound, and when extra hardware is useful.

Usually, no. Most computers already have audio hardware for ordinary headphones and speakers, so you do not need to buy a separate sound card just to listen. Consider extra hardware only if the built-in output is missing, noisy, too quiet for your headphones, lacks a connection you need, or you want recording features. Check your audio settings and drivers before buying anything.

What “sound card” means

The term can refer to audio hardware integrated into a computer, an internal add-on card, or an external USB audio device. All handle some combination of audio input and output. For listening, the key job is converting digital audio into an analog signal that headphones or speakers can play. Microsoft describes this codec function in its documentation for a particular Windows modern-standby platform; the implementation varies between computers. Microsoft Learn: Audio subsystem power management for modern standby platforms.

That conversion is already built into most computers. A separate PCIe card or USB device is therefore an optional upgrade, not a routine requirement for stereo playback. SoundGuys: What is a sound card?

Connect ordinary headphones or speakers

For wired analog headphones or powered speakers, use the computer’s appropriate audio jack, then select that output in the operating system. Many motherboards use a lime-colored jack for headphones or two-channel speakers, but jack colors and layouts are not universal. Some boards have separate outputs for multi-channel speaker setups. Check the manual for your computer or motherboard rather than relying on color alone. ASUS support: motherboard audio I/O guide.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

USB headphones and speakers, and wireless devices, use their own connection and may appear as separate output choices. Select the device you intend to use in your system’s sound settings.

If there is no sound, troubleshoot before buying hardware

  1. Check the basics. Confirm that the headphones or speakers are connected to the right port, powered on if necessary, and not muted. Raise both the computer’s output volume and any volume control on the device.
  2. Select the intended output. Open your operating system’s sound settings and choose the headphones, speakers, or other device you are using. ASUS documents this output-selection check for Windows; exact screens can vary by model and software version. ASUS support: motherboard audio I/O guide.
  3. Check whether the audio device is detected and enabled. In Windows, Microsoft recommends checking Device Manager, enabling the device if that option is available, and scanning for hardware changes if it is missing. Microsoft Support: Fix missing or undetected audio output device in Windows.
  4. Check the driver. If the driver is missing or incompatible, install the current one from your PC or audio-hardware maker. Microsoft’s guidance is for Windows, and steps can differ by version. Its support page notes that Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft Support: Fix missing or undetected audio output device in Windows.

When extra audio hardware may help

The built-in output is noisy or unreliable

If you hear persistent interference or crackling, first rule out a loose connection, faulty cable, or software issue. If the computer’s analog output itself is the problem, an external USB DAC may move the digital-to-analog conversion outside the computer and avoid some internal-noise problems. That is a possible fix, not a guaranteed audible improvement in every setup. Corsair: Is There a Big Difference Using Your Motherboard vs a Great DAC as Audio Source?

The headphones are too quiet

A headphone amplifier can help when the existing output cannot provide enough level for the headphones. Check whether a prospective DAC or USB audio device includes amplification and whether its output is suitable for your particular headphones. A DAC converts the signal; it does not necessarily provide enough amplification by itself.

You need a connection or channel setup the computer lacks

An internal sound card or external audio device may add different inputs, outputs, or channel options. Before choosing one, confirm that it has the exact connections you need and works with your computer. For an internal card, also check desktop expansion-slot and case compatibility. Motherboard jack layouts vary, so consult the machine’s documentation first. SoundGuys: What is a sound card? ASUS support: motherboard audio I/O guide.

Choose hardware by the problem it solves

Option Best fit What to check
Built-in audio Routine headphone or speaker playback when it works and has the connections you need. Correct jack, selected output, and working driver.
Internal sound card A desktop that needs additional or different audio inputs, outputs, or features. Expansion-slot and case compatibility; confirm its features address a specific need.
External USB DAC or headphone amplifier Moving conversion outside the computer, or adding amplification when the existing output is insufficient. USB and operating-system compatibility, output type, controls, and adequate drive for the headphones. A DAC alone does not necessarily include an amplifier.
Audio interface Recording or production needs such as microphone preamps, instrument inputs, hands-on controls, or direct monitoring. Required inputs and outputs, driver support, latency, and workflow.

An audio interface is not a necessary substitute for a sound card when the goal is simply to listen. It is built for a different job: connecting and managing recording sources. Focusrite notes that speakers are not required to use an interface; headphones can be connected directly. It also says a Windows DAW using ASIO can use only one device for input and output, which may matter if you want to combine an interface with another playback device. Focusrite: Do I Need Speakers Connected to My Audio Interface? Audient likewise discusses interfaces in the context of recording workflows. Audient support: Do I need an audio interface?

Will a separate DAC sound better?

Not automatically. Whether a change is audible depends on the complete setup, and listeners can prefer different devices or combinations. If your current output is clean, loud enough, and has the connections you need, a new converter may not solve a problem you can hear. Treat a DAC, sound card, or amplifier as a response to a specific limitation or feature requirement—not as a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade.
