No—not for every basic Galaxy phone function. You can complete core setup without treating a Samsung account as mandatory, but Samsung services such as Galaxy Store and SmartThings Find may require you to sign in. Whether you should create one depends on which services and features you plan to use.
What can you do without a Samsung account?
Samsung’s US setup guidance presents connecting to Wi-Fi, transferring data, adding a Google Account, and setting a lock screen as setup steps separate from adding a Samsung Account. It describes a Samsung account as the way to access features that require that login. This means the account is not presented as a prerequisite for every basic phone task; exact setup screens and requirements can differ by model and software version. Samsung lists services such as Galaxy Store, Samsung Pay, Bixby, and SmartThings Find among the services accessible through a Samsung Account. Samsung Canada’s support guidance puts the general rule plainly: some Samsung apps, services, and features require sign-in before use. Check the particular service and your device’s availability rather than assuming every Samsung app has the same requirement. Is a Samsung account worth it for finding a lost device?
It can be an important part of using Samsung Find or SmartThings Find, but signing in alone does not guarantee that a lost device can be located. Samsung US says the phone or tablet needs a Samsung Account added, remote controls enabled, power, and a stable network connection. If the device is powered off, Samsung says only its last known location is available. Samsung’s US lost-device guidance explains these conditions.
Offline finding has additional conditions
Samsung’s UK service information says Offline finding must be enabled and is available only on listed device families and software versions. Nearby Galaxy devices may help relay a location, but this is not the same as guaranteed live tracking or a promise of precise recovery. Supported phones, tablets, watches, Buds, and SmartTags vary. Check the service details for your country and model in Samsung UK’s SmartThings Find information.

What are the benefits beyond lost-device finding?
- Samsung services: One sign-in can provide access to supported Samsung services, including the Galaxy Store and Samsung Pay where available.
- Backup, restore, and sync: Samsung describes account-based options for keeping some data available across devices or restoring it. The included data and supported products depend on the service; an account does not mean every kind of data or every Samsung product is covered.
- Device management and sharing: Samsung describes account features for managing devices and sharing through its ecosystem. Availability depends on the product and region.
Samsung also allows product registration for eligible products, with stated exclusions including memory and storage devices, accessories, and components. Samsung says setup and feature availability can vary by device, software version, and region. If a specific feature matters to you, verify its requirements for your model and country before deciding. Can you add a Samsung account later?
Yes. Samsung’s US instructions describe adding or managing an account through the device’s Settings, so you can skip sign-in during initial setup and revisit it if a feature you want later requires one. The exact menu wording may vary by device and software; use the account option in Settings or consult Samsung’s account setup and management instructions.
