Not for every basic Copilot interaction. Microsoft’s general Copilot guidance says you can use Copilot in Edge without signing in, but its Edge-specific setup guide tells users to sign in with a personal Microsoft account. The guidance differs, so account-free access should not be taken as a guarantee that every Edge version, region, or feature works without sign-in.

Microsoft’s general guidance on Copilot access lists Edge as a way to use Copilot without a Microsoft account. Its free Copilot comparison likewise says sign-in is optional.

By contrast, Microsoft’s Edge-specific getting-started guide tells users to sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account. Its FAQ answers the question directly: “Yes. Sign in to Edge with your personal Microsoft account to get started.” The public guidance does not explain exactly how this difference maps to Edge versions, regions, platforms, or feature rollouts.

For free Copilot, Microsoft says a personal account unlocks features such as chat history, image creation, longer conversations, and longer voice interactions. Microsoft says that when you use Copilot without an account, prompts are grounded only in public web data; it does not have access to your personal files, email, or organizational content. Account-free use therefore does not provide the same context or personalization as an authenticated experience.

Microsoft’s Edge guide describes using Copilot with a webpage, video, or PDF. The guide’s sign-in instruction reflects its documented setup; the separate general guidance above is why account-free availability should not be assumed for every configuration.

- Select the Copilot icon in Edge.
- Ask a question about the content, such as requesting a summary or clarification.
When enabled and relevant to your prompt, Edge may use the current webpage, its title, open tabs, browser history, your query, and recent conversation history. Account sign-in and permission to use browsing context are separate: in Edge’s Copilot and AI settings, you can turn off “Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.”

Is Microsoft 365 Premium required?
No—not for standard Copilot chat. Microsoft identifies Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the US as the consumer audience for the separate Browse with Copilot feature, with additional markets to follow. That subscription reference concerns Browse with Copilot, not the basic question-and-answer experience.
