No—you do not need a mechanical keyboard. It may be worth choosing if you enjoy a more distinct switch feel, want keycap customization, or value easier access for cleaning. A membrane keyboard may be the better fit if you want something quiet, light, compact, or inexpensive. Neither type is automatically faster, more comfortable, or healthier; the right choice depends on your preferences and setup.
What makes a keyboard mechanical?
A mechanical keyboard has an individual switch assembly beneath each key. In HP’s description, that assembly includes a spring, stem, and electrical contacts; a keypress registers at an actuation point before the key reaches the end of its travel. A membrane keyboard instead uses flexible layers and rubber domes that make contact when pressed. Those differences help explain why the keyboards can feel and sound different, but the experience also depends on the particular board and switch.

Mechanical switches are commonly described as linear, tactile, or clicky. Linear switches move without a pronounced tactile bump; tactile switches provide a bump; clicky switches add an audible click. These labels describe switch feel and sound, not a guarantee that one style will suit every typist.

Mechanical vs. membrane: what changes in practice?
| Factor | Mechanical keyboard | Membrane keyboard | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Individual switches offer different linear, tactile, or clicky feels. | Typically a softer, less distinct feel in HP’s comparison. | Preference is personal; try a similar switch if you can. |
| Sound | Varies by switch and board; clicky styles can be conspicuous. | Generally quieter, according to HP and RTINGS. | For calls or shared rooms, consider what people nearby and your microphone will hear. |
| Cost | Usually higher at the category level, according to HP and RTINGS. | Usually lower at the category level. | Set a budget before comparing features. |
| Portability and height | Often heavier or bulkier; some boards are high-profile. | Often lighter and lower-profile, according to RTINGS. | Consider desk space, travel, and how the keyboard fits your workspace. |
| Customization and maintenance | Keycaps can be removed; some models support keycap or switch changes. | Typically offers less customization and can be harder to service. | Features and repairability vary by model; check the specific keyboard. |
| Ergonomics | Mechanical switches alone do not establish an ergonomic benefit. | Some low-profile designs may suit some users. | Choose for the person, task, and overall setup—not the switch label. |
What might you gain from a mechanical keyboard?
A choice of switch feel
If you already know that you like a particular linear, tactile, or clicky feel, a mechanical keyboard can give you more ways to select that experience. If you do not know what you prefer, do not assume that a more distinct press will feel better. When possible, try a board with a similar switch before buying.

Keycap customization and access for cleaning
Mechanical keyboard keycaps can be removed for cleaning, and some models allow more customization or switch replacement. Those options are not universal: check whether the exact board supports the changes you want. RTINGS notes that repairability can depend on both the model and the user’s skill. A keycap puller is an optional tool for removing compatible keycaps; it is not a requirement for owning a mechanical keyboard.
Potential durability, with important caveats
Published category-level keypress estimates vary. HP gives approximately 50–80 million keypresses per key for mechanical keyboards and around 5 million for membrane keyboards. RTINGS gives a broad range of 50–100+ million for mechanical keyboards and 5–10 million for membrane keyboards. These are category or manufacturer estimates, not guarantees of real-world lifespan. For a particular board, look for the specification of its actual switches or model rather than treating a category range as a promise.

What are the trade-offs?
- Price: Mechanical keyboards usually cost more than membrane keyboards in the cited category comparisons.
- Sound: Mechanical does not mean uniformly loud. Switch and board design matter, and clicky switches can be especially noticeable. RTINGS notes that silent switches are available, but a quiet choice still depends on the particular board and setup.
- Size and weight: Some mechanical boards are heavier, bulkier, or taller than membrane alternatives. That may matter if you travel with a keyboard or have limited desk space.
- Compatibility and repair: Customization and repair options differ by model. Check the keyboard’s layout, connection, device compatibility, and any hot-swap or repair features before buying.
Does a mechanical keyboard make you type faster?
There is not enough evidence here to say that an individual will type faster on a mechanical keyboard than on a membrane keyboard. The available NIOSH-hosted study by Aulck, Bartha, Harper, Johnson, and Kim (2014) did not compare those two keyboard types. It measured 19 subjects using a virtual keyboard with 0 mm travel, a notebook keyboard with 1.8 mm travel, and a desktop keyboard with 4 mm travel.

It cannot show that buying a mechanical keyboard will improve your speed or comfort.

Is a mechanical keyboard more ergonomic?
Not by virtue of its switches alone. Ergonomics depends on the person, task, workspace, and keyboard features such as shape and height. OSHA’s keyboard guidance says alternative designs can help maintain a neutral wrist posture, but it does not conclusively show that alternative keyboards prevent discomfort or injury. Logitech likewise frames ergonomic choice as dependent on the individual and situation; its discussion of curved ergonomic designs is not evidence that mechanical switches themselves improve health.
Do not buy a mechanical keyboard expecting it to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injury, or wrist pain. If comfort is the goal, consider how the keyboard fits your posture and workspace, and seek qualified medical advice about persistent symptoms.

Who should choose a mechanical keyboard?
It may suit you if you already like a particular switch feel, want more keycap customization, or value easier keycap-level access for cleaning—and are comfortable with the price, sound, size, and weight of the model you choose. It can also be a reasonable desk keyboard for typing or gaming, but those uses do not guarantee a performance advantage for every person or board.

When is a membrane keyboard enough?
Keep using a membrane keyboard if it works well for you and you do not need a different switch feel or customization. It may also be the practical choice when low noise, portability, a lower profile, or price matters more. Neither HP nor RTINGS treats one type as universally better; the decision is about your priorities and the specific keyboard.

What to check before buying
- Choose the feel and sound you prefer; be cautious about clicky switches in shared spaces or on calls.
- Check the keyboard’s layout, height, size, connection, and compatibility with your devices.
- Confirm whether keycaps can be removed and whether the board supports any switch changes or repairs you want.
- Compare the specific model’s specifications and return policy; category-level durability estimates are not a lifespan guarantee.
- Consider a switch tester only if you want to sample switch types, and check that it is compatible with the switches you are considering.
