Usually, no—but it depends on why you are flying. In the United States, a person flying strictly for recreation under the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations does not need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. That recreational flyer must pass the free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), keep proof of completion, follow the exception’s operating conditions, and register the aircraft when registration is required.
A flight for business, work, or another non-recreational purpose generally follows Part 107. That means obtaining an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate before operating. “Drone license” is common shorthand; the FAA’s official term is Remote Pilot Certificate. The rules below reflect U.S. federal FAA guidance checked October 12, 2026. Local restrictions, fees, airspace tools, and Remote ID information can change, so confirm the current FAA and local requirements before each flight.

Start with the purpose of the flight
The first question is not how much the drone weighs or whether someone pays you. It is what the operation is for. The FAA separates recreational operations conducted under the statutory exception from operations covered by Part 107.

| Situation | FAA path | Immediate action |
|---|---|---|
| Flying strictly for hobby or recreation under the exception | Recreational flyer | Pass TRUST, retain proof, follow the exception’s conditions, and register the drone when required. |
| Flying for business, work, or another non-recreational purpose | Part 107 | Obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate and meet Part 107 requirements. |
| Flying in controlled airspace | Your applicable recreational or Part 107 path plus airspace authorization | Obtain authorization before flight through LAANC where available or FAA DroneZone. |
A payment arrangement by itself does not answer every borderline question. If the purpose is unclear, use the FAA’s current getting-started guidance rather than assuming that calling a flight a hobby makes it recreational.

Do I need a license to fly a drone for fun?
You do not need a Part 107 certificate for a flight that is strictly recreational and qualifies for the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. You still have legal steps to complete:
- Pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test, known as TRUST.
- Carry or otherwise retain proof that you passed; the FAA may request it.
- Follow every operating condition attached to the recreational exception and current FAA safety guidance.
- Register the drone if its weight and use require registration.
- Obtain airspace authorization before entering controlled airspace.
TRUST is an aeronautical knowledge and safety test for recreational flyers, not a pilot certificate. FAA-approved TRUST administrators offer it free. If you lose the completion certificate, the FAA says you must retake TRUST rather than relying on a missing or reconstructed document.
When does Part 107 apply?
Part 107 is the normal federal pathway for a drone operation that is not strictly recreational. The person operating under Part 107 must hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. This is the credential many people call a drone license.

Requirements for a first-time applicant
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Be physically and mentally able to safely operate a drone.
- Pass the initial Unmanned Aircraft General—Small aeronautical knowledge examination.
After certification, the pilot must complete recurrent training within each 24-calendar-month period to keep aeronautical knowledge current. A certificate does not remove other obligations: the aircraft may still need registration, Remote ID compliance, and airspace authorization.

Examples that should prompt a Part 107 check
Use Part 107 guidance when the flight supports a job, business activity, inspection, real-estate assignment, paid media project, or another purpose outside personal recreation. The exact facts matter in uncertain cases. Do not treat a particular payment method, gift, or informal arrangement as a universal legal test.
Is TRUST the same as a Part 107 license?
No. TRUST and the Remote Pilot Certificate serve different categories of operation.
| Credential | Who uses it | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| TRUST completion proof | Recreational flyers operating under the limited recreational exception | It does not authorize business or other Part 107 operations. |
| Remote Pilot Certificate | Operators flying under Part 107 | It does not automatically authorize controlled-airspace operations or register an aircraft. |
TRUST is free through FAA-approved administrators. Keep the completion proof available while flying. If it is lost, retake the test. Part 107 applicants, by contrast, must pass the specified knowledge exam and maintain recency through recurrent training every 24 calendar months.

Recreational flights
For a recreational flyer operating under the exception, a drone weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) must be registered. A recreational drone at or below that threshold is excepted from recreational registration under the FAA guidance summarized here. Weigh the aircraft as it will be flown, including installed equipment that affects the applicable weight determination.
Part 107 flights
The FAA says drones operated under Part 107 must be registered. The recreational 250-gram threshold does not turn a Part 107 aircraft into an unregistered aircraft.
Fee, term, and displaying the number
The FAA registration page lists a $5 fee and three-year validity for recreational inventory registration and for each Part 107 drone registration. Fees and terms can change, so verify the current FAA registration page when filing. A registered aircraft must display its FAA registration number on the exterior. A simple registration-number label can be a practical way to display the number, but a label does not perform registration and is not FAA endorsement of any product.
Registration checklist
- Determine whether the flight is recreational or under Part 107.
- Confirm the drone’s weight and whether the chosen operating path requires registration.
- Complete the FAA registration process and pay the current listed fee when required.
- Record the registration number with the aircraft and place the number on the exterior as required.
- Keep the registration information accessible while operating.
What about Remote ID?
The FAA says drones that are required to be registered—or that are registered—must comply with Remote ID. That includes registered recreational aircraft, Part 107 aircraft, and other aircraft covered by the registration rule.

Two compliance approaches
- Standard Remote ID: the drone has built-in Remote ID functionality that meets the applicable FAA requirements.
- Remote ID broadcast module: a separate module provides the required broadcast function for a compatible aircraft.
Compatibility is specific to the drone and module. Before buying or installing anything, check the current FAA Declaration of Compliance information and the drone or module manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that a generic broadcast device is accepted for every aircraft. Registration, TRUST, and a Part 107 certificate are not substitutes for Remote ID compliance when Remote ID is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I fly near an airport?
Sometimes, but proximity to an airport is not a permission by itself. The relevant issue is the airspace classification and the authorization required for the exact launch and operating location.
Controlled airspace
Recreational flyers need airspace authorization before operating in controlled airspace. In areas enabled for it, the FAA’s Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) provides authorization through FAA-approved service suppliers. FAA DroneZone handles other authorization requests. The altitude or operating limit depends on the location and the authorization returned for that location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat registration and TRUST do not provide
Registering a drone does not grant permission to enter controlled airspace. Passing TRUST does not grant it either. Authorization must be obtained before the flight through the applicable FAA process, and the authorization’s conditions must be followed.

How to check before takeoff
- Identify the precise launch site, not merely the nearest airport.
- Check the current FAA airspace tool for controlled-airspace status and any displayed limit.
- Request authorization through LAANC where available, or submit the request through FAA DroneZone when required.
- Read the approved altitude, time, and geographic conditions before launching.
- Recheck for temporary restrictions or changed conditions on the day of flight.
What beginners still need to check locally
FAA rules are federal, but they are not the only rules affecting a flight. State laws, municipal restrictions, park rules, landowner policies, and temporary site closures can limit where a drone may launch, land, or be operated. The federal FAA requirements summarized here do not resolve those location-specific questions.
- Check the authority managing the launch property, such as a city, state agency, or park service.
- Confirm whether takeoff and landing are prohibited even when the surrounding airspace is available.
- Look for temporary flight restrictions and event-related limits.
- Respect privacy, trespass, and other generally applicable laws.
A practical preflight decision checklist
- Classify the purpose: strictly recreational, or another purpose that calls for Part 107?
- Choose the pilot requirement: TRUST proof for the recreational exception, or a Remote Pilot Certificate for Part 107.
- Check age and knowledge requirements: first-time Part 107 applicants must be at least 16 and pass the initial knowledge exam; certificate holders need recurrent training every 24 calendar months.
- Check registration: recreational aircraft over 0.55 pounds (250 grams) require registration; Part 107 drones must be registered.
- Check Remote ID: a required or registered drone must use an accepted Standard Remote ID system or a compatible broadcast module.
- Check airspace: obtain LAANC or DroneZone authorization before controlled-airspace operations.
- Check the site: review local land, park, state, municipal, and temporary restrictions.
- Carry evidence: keep TRUST proof, registration information, and any airspace authorization accessible while flying.
Common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is under 250 grams, so nothing is required.”
The 250-gram exception described here applies to recreational registration. It does not create a blanket exemption for Part 107 operations, and it does not remove airspace or local restrictions.
“I passed TRUST, so I can accept a job.”
TRUST is for recreational operations under the exception. A non-recreational operation generally requires the Part 107 pathway and Remote Pilot Certificate.
Recommended Free Tools
“Registration means I can fly near any airport.”
Registration identifies the aircraft; it is not controlled-airspace authorization. Check the location in the current FAA authorization system before flight.
“Any Remote ID module will work.”
Acceptance and compatibility depend on the specific drone and module. Verify the current FAA Declaration of Compliance information and manufacturer documentation.
Bottom line for a first flight
For a purely recreational U.S. flight, plan on TRUST, the applicable registration, Remote ID compliance when registration is required or the aircraft is registered, controlled-airspace authorization where needed, and a separate check of local rules. For work or another non-recreational purpose, plan on Part 107 and an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. Confirm current FAA fees, procedures, approved test administrators, airspace tools, and Remote ID records before relying on an older checklist.
