Most websites do not need a dedicated public IP address. Shared hosting and content-delivery networks (CDNs) can serve many domains securely from the same addresses because modern browsers use Server Name Indication (SNI) during the TLS handshake. A dedicated IP becomes useful for a narrower set of requirements: supporting legacy clients that cannot send SNI, meeting an enterprise allowlist or routing policy, or running a large, predictable email program where you want an isolated sending reputation.

The important distinction is between the IP used for web traffic and the IP used for outbound email. Buying a dedicated website IP does not automatically improve search rankings, page speed, or inbox placement. Choose one only when a specific compatibility, control, or reputation requirement justifies its recurring cost and operational work.

What a dedicated IP address actually is
An IP address identifies a network endpoint. With ordinary shared hosting or a CDN, multiple domains resolve to the same public address. The server then uses the requested hostname, supplied during the TLS handshake and HTTP request, to select the correct certificate and website. A dedicated website IP is an address assigned for your domain or service rather than shared with unrelated sites.
Dedicated does not always mean permanently fixed at one physical machine. A CDN may allocate dedicated addresses across edge locations, and those addresses can change over time. AWS explicitly notes that CloudFront dedicated IPs are not guaranteed to remain the same. If a policy requires a permanently controlled address, ask whether the provider offers a static service, a provider-owned reserved address, or bring-your-own-IP (BYOIP), rather than assuming a CDN allocation is a permanent origin address.

Email uses a separate path. Your website may be behind a CDN while mail is handled by an email provider with its own shared or dedicated sending IPs. Decide the web and email questions independently.
Does HTTPS require a dedicated IP?
No, not for modern clients. SNI lets a browser tell the server which hostname it wants while negotiating TLS. The server can then return the matching certificate even when many domains share one address. AWS CloudFront describes SNI as the recommended option for HTTPS requests because it works for most viewers.
When SNI is enough
- Current desktop and mobile browsers support SNI.
- Typical blogs, portfolios, brochure sites, stores, APIs, and membership sites can use shared hosting or a CDN with SNI.
- A valid certificate for your hostname, correct DNS, and an HTTPS-capable host are the relevant requirements; a unique IP is not.
CloudFront documentation identifies SNI support in browsers and clients released after 2010. That covers the overwhelming majority of visitors, but a controlled environment can still contain older software.
When dedicated-IP HTTPS can matter
A legacy browser, embedded device, private application, or inspection system that cannot send SNI may fail when several certificates share one address. AWS lists dedicated-IP HTTPS as the option that works for all clients, including those unable to use SNI. Before paying for it, identify the actual client versions and test them against your proposed CDN or host. Replacing the old client or terminating TLS on a compatible gateway may be less expensive than maintaining dedicated-IP service.
Dedicated-IP HTTPS can carry a substantial premium. The CloudFront FAQ lists a $600-per-month Dedicated IP Custom SSL price, prorated by the hour, for the service described in that documentation. That figure is specific to the documented CloudFront offering and should not be treated as a general market price. Other providers may charge differently or not offer the feature.

Will a dedicated IP improve SEO or website speed?
There is no general SEO or performance upgrade. cPanel identifies improved performance and improved SEO as common misconceptions about dedicated IP addresses. WP Engine’s technical material likewise explains that modern encryption, authentication systems, email infrastructure, and dynamic DNS removed the broad need for a unique website address.

A dedicated address does not create those signals. Speed depends on hosting capacity, application work, caching, image weight, network distance, and CDN configuration. Sharing an IP does not, by itself, make a page slower.
There can be an indirect operational benefit when an enterprise policy requires traffic to originate from an approved address. That is a compliance or access-control requirement, not an SEO or latency advantage. Measure the actual bottleneck before changing IP architecture.
Will a dedicated IP keep your email out of spam?
Not automatically. Email reputation is built from sending behavior, volume, authentication, complaint rates, bounces, and the controls of the email provider. A dedicated website IP does not change those factors.
Shared email IPs are usually right for small or irregular programs
Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) recommends shared IP addresses when you do not send large volumes on a regular and predictable basis. On a shared pool, the provider manages infrastructure and reputation across senders. That is generally a better fit for transactional mail from a small site, occasional newsletters, or traffic that varies sharply by season.

Dedicated email IPs fit predictable, high-volume senders
A dedicated sending IP isolates your reputation from other customers, but it also makes you responsible for establishing and protecting that reputation. SES documentation gives “several hundred emails within a 24-hour period at least once per month” as an example of a volume pattern that can help cultivate a reputation with an internet service provider. This is an example, not a universal threshold or a guarantee of inbox placement.
Dedicated email addresses require a gradual warmup: begin with controlled volumes, increase in stages, and monitor bounces, complaints, blocks, and engagement. Sending too little or sending in irregular bursts can leave the address without a stable reputation. The service also adds recurring fees and monitoring work. If your volume is low, unpredictable, or newly launched, a managed shared pool is usually safer.
How web and email DNS interact
Putting a website behind a proxy does not mean you should proxy its mail server. Cloudflare states that MX records cannot be proxied. If SMTP traffic is sent through a web proxy, mail systems can connect to the proxy’s addresses instead of the real mail host, which prevents delivery.
Safe pattern when the website is proxied
- Keep the web hostname, such as
www.example.com, on the provider’s normal proxied or CDN path. - Publish MX records that point to your email service exactly as that service specifies.
- Use a separate mail hostname, such as
mail.example.com, with DNS-only resolution when your provider requires it. - Do not assume that giving the website a dedicated IP gives outbound mail the same address or reputation.
Check the provider’s DNS instructions before changing records. A website can continue working while mail silently fails if MX targets or proxy settings are wrong.

Choose by requirement, not by the word “dedicated”

Evaluate four questions before ordering: Can every client send SNI? Is the traffic web or email? Is usage predictable? Do you need control over allowlisting, reputation, or routing badly enough to pay and operate the service?

When a static or dedicated website IP is worth paying for
Legacy-client compatibility
Inventory the browsers, devices, SDKs, and private networks that connect to the site. If one cannot support SNI and cannot be upgraded, dedicated-IP TLS may be a legitimate compatibility expense. Document that dependency so you can remove the dedicated service when the obsolete client disappears.
Enterprise allowlisting and fixed-origin controls
Corporate firewalls, partner systems, and regulated environments sometimes permit connections only from known addresses. In that case, the value is predictable access control rather than faster delivery. Cloudflare documents static-IP leasing and BYOIP options for Enterprise customers. Confirm whether the requirement applies to the public edge, the origin, API calls, or administrative access; each may need a different design.
Controlled network routing
A fixed address can simplify a partner’s route, firewall rule, or monitoring policy. Ask the provider how failover works and whether the address remains available during an edge or region change. A “dedicated” CDN address that can change may not satisfy a policy demanding permanent ownership.

- Recurring service fee: Dedicated-IP HTTPS can be priced far above ordinary hosting; the CloudFront example is $600 per month, prorated hourly.
- Operational ownership: You may need warmup plans, reputation monitoring, abuse response, and additional DNS administration, especially for email.
- Failure concentration: A bad configuration or reputation problem can affect your own address without the buffering of a shared provider pool.
- Migration work: Changing providers, certificates, firewall rules, allowlists, and DNS records can require coordinated updates.
- Address stability: CDN allocations may change, so verify the provider’s promise before basing a permanent firewall rule on them.
Price the complete service, not only the line item for an IP. Include certificate handling, traffic delivery, monitoring, support, and the engineering time needed to keep the arrangement reliable.

- Write down the requirement. Identify the failing client, allowlist, routing rule, or traffic pattern that cannot be served by shared infrastructure. If you cannot name the requirement, do not buy the IP yet.
- Confirm the provider’s product. Ask whether it is dedicated-IP HTTPS, a static edge address, a dedicated origin address, or BYOIP. These are different services. Check whether addresses can change and whether IPv4, IPv6, or both are included.
- Verify certificate behavior. Ensure the certificate covers every hostname visitors use and that the provider supports the TLS versions required by your clients. A dedicated address does not fix an invalid certificate.
- Prepare DNS changes. Set the required A and/or AAAA records according to the provider’s instructions. Keep MX records on the email path; do not point mail through a web proxy.
- Test before switching all traffic. Test modern browsers, the known legacy client, API consumers, redirects, certificate chains, and both IPv4 and IPv6 if enabled. Confirm that the expected address is returned from the regions where users connect.
- Update allowlists and monitoring. Change partner firewalls, WAF rules, uptime checks, and access policies only after the new service is verified. Record ownership and renewal details.
- Plan rollback. Keep the previous DNS values and provider settings documented. Lowering DNS TTL ahead of a planned change can reduce the time required to revert, subject to your provider’s caching behavior.
Troubleshooting common decisions
HTTPS works for you but fails for one old device
First confirm that the device truly lacks SNI rather than failing because of an outdated TLS version, certificate chain, cipher, clock, or DNS resolver. If SNI is the only incompatibility, use a dedicated-IP HTTPS option or place a compatible TLS gateway in front of the application. Do not buy a dedicated address based only on an unverified error message.

Mail started failing after a DNS change
Inspect MX records and the hostname they reference. If the mail hostname is proxied, switch it to the email provider’s required DNS-only mode. Verify that the web proxy’s addresses are not being advertised as SMTP destinations. Website uptime does not prove that mail routing is correct.
Email still lands in spam on a dedicated sending IP
Review authentication, list quality, complaint and bounce rates, sending consistency, and warmup progress with the email provider. A dedicated address isolates reputation; it cannot compensate for poor sending practices or guarantee placement.

Ask for a static-IP or BYOIP product designed for enterprise controls, or terminate the partner connection on infrastructure with a provider-backed fixed address. Do not promise permanence when the CDN documentation says allocations can change.
Bottom line
Use shared hosting or a CDN with SNI for the normal website. Reserve dedicated website IPs for verified legacy-client, allowlisting, or enterprise-routing requirements. Treat email as a separate architecture decision: shared IPs suit low or irregular volume, while dedicated email IPs are for large, predictable programs that can support warmup, monitoring, and the added cost. A dedicated address is a control mechanism, not a shortcut to higher rankings, faster pages, or guaranteed inbox delivery.
