You need a coaxial splitter only if one antenna must feed more than one TV, DVR, tuner, or other compatible receiver. With a single receiver, connect the antenna directly. A passive splitter divides the signal and reduces the power available at each output, so it can make marginal reception unreliable.
When do you need an antenna splitter?
Use a splitter when you want to distribute one antenna feed to multiple receivers. Each connected TV or tuner uses its own tuner and can independently select an available over-the-air channel. For one receiver, a splitter has no benefit: connect the antenna coax directly to the TV or tuner.

Choose enough outputs for the receivers you actually plan to connect. A passive splitter does not create signal; it divides the incoming RF power among its outputs and adds insertion loss. The loss depends on the splitter and frequency, so check the specification for the specific unit.

Channel Master’s manufacturer guidance gives these typical loss ranges per output. They are engineering figures, not independent measurements of every splitter; actual specifications vary by model and frequency.
#1 Best Overall
- MULTI-PURPOSE – This coax splitter is designed for use with amplifiers, amplified antennas, HDTVs and more
- FREQUENCY RANGE – Distributes a digital signal in the 5-2500 MHz Frequency Range
- CORROSION RESISTANT – The gold plated RG6 connectors allows for optimal connectivity
- ALL BRANDS – Compatible with all brands
- CONVENIENCE - Split a single cable or satellite signal to view and display on two separate TVs
| Passive splitter | Typical loss per output |
|---|---|
| 2-way | About 3.5–4 dB |
| 4-way | About 7–8 dB |
| 8-way | About 10.5–12 dB |
A 6 dB reduction corresponds to approximately one quarter of the original RF power, according to Channel Master. These losses are only part of the total: coaxial cable, connectors, wall plates, and additional splitters also reduce the signal. A signal that works when one TV is connected directly may not have enough margin after distribution.
Should you use a passive splitter or an amplifier?
The right choice depends on whether the antenna provides a usable signal before distribution. An amplifier is not a universal fix: it cannot repair interference or poor signal quality, and an overloaded amplifier can make reception worse.

| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| One receiver | Connect the antenna directly; no splitter is needed for this setup. |
| Multiple receivers and reliable reception | Use a passive splitter with enough outputs, provided the signal has enough margin for the added loss. |
| Usable signal at the antenna, but distribution losses cause problems | A distribution amplifier may compensate for losses across the network. |
| Poor signal at the antenna | Investigate antenna placement, aiming, interference, and signal quality. A preamplifier near the antenna may help preserve a usable signal before downstream losses, but it will not correct interference or multipath. |
Before choosing amplification, account for the incoming signal, splitter loss, receiver count, and the length and condition of each coax run. Without those details, it is not possible to say whether a particular home needs an amplifier.

Check power requirements if you have a preamplifier
A mast-mounted preamplifier may receive power through the coax from a power inserter. Any splitter between the preamplifier and inserter must pass the required DC power along the correct path. A splitter can pass television RF while blocking that power, preventing the preamplifier from operating. Check the preamplifier and splitter instructions before adding or replacing a component.

And the abrasion-resistant outer sheath withstands frequent bending and rubbing to ensure long-lasting performance!
- WIDE APPLICATION:F-Type splitter coaxial cable features an F Male to Dual F Female splitter design for cable, CATV, VCR, DVD, HDTV and cable antenna extension distribution cable connections. With 75 ohm impedance, it ensures low signal loss, provides clear audio and video, and enhances channel reception.
- TOOL-FREE INSTALLATION: F-Type splitter coaxial cable features a simple screw-in design for effortless, tool-free installation. Its plug-and-play feature ensures a hassle-free installation, eliminating the need for a complicated installation process. Designed for everyday use, it provides time-saving connections.
What to check if reception gets worse after splitting
- Compare direct and split connections. Connect one receiver directly to the antenna temporarily. If reception is reliable direct but not through the network, the added distribution loss or a component in the network may be the cause.
- Inspect the coax path. Check cable for damage and connectors for looseness or an open connection. Include wall plates and any other splitters when considering total loss.
- Check the splitter. Confirm that it is suitable for the antenna setup and has enough outputs; a defective splitter can also cause trouble.
- Verify preamplifier power. If the system uses a powered preamplifier, confirm that the splitter passes DC on the required path.
- Consider amplification only after checking the signal. A distribution amplifier can help with network losses when its input is already usable. If reception is poor at the antenna, first investigate placement, aiming, and interference rather than assuming a splitter or amplifier will solve it.
