No. GPS on a Samsung Galaxy Watch does not require a mobile carrier plan. GPS is the watch’s positioning feature. A carrier plan only matters if you have an LTE model and want it to make calls or send and receive messages without your phone nearby.
GPS and LTE are separate features
Samsung lists GPS as a capability of the Galaxy Watch and describes LTE as a separate service that exists only on LTE versions of the watch. If you want location or workout tracking, you don’t need LTE service for that purpose.

A carrier plan is what activates LTE. With one, an LTE watch can receive calls and messages without a direct connection to your phone, subject to carrier service and compatibility, according to Samsung’s U.S. support guidance.

Samsung’s regional support documentation says Bluetooth-only models cannot use LTE service. Buying a Bluetooth model and adding a plan later is not an option.

What an LTE plan requires
United States activation
Samsung’s U.S. activation article names AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon as carrier examples. These are examples, not a guarantee that your model and account qualify. According to the article:
- The instructions apply to LTE versions of the watch only.
- The phone you use for activation should run Android 5.0 or later and have at least 1.5 GB of RAM.
- The phone needs an internet connection during setup.
- Plans and activation methods vary by carrier.
Model-specific requirements
Samsung’s 2023 specification sheet for the Galaxy Watch6 Classic gives its own conditions for standalone connectivity. Calls and messages require initial pairing with an eligible Android 10.0-or-later smartphone, plus a separate qualifying wireless plan. This is Watch6 documentation, so don’t assume it applies to every Galaxy Watch generation.

The same sheet warns that carrier voice support can be unavailable or limited to certain areas. Don’t assume standalone calling works everywhere on every carrier.

Country matters
Model availability and carrier support differ by market. Samsung’s regional support page, which covers Japan, lists its own supported models and carriers, and these don’t carry over to the U.S. or elsewhere. The U.S. carrier names above come from Samsung’s U.S. support. Before buying an LTE watch or a plan, check Samsung’s support pages for your country and your carrier’s current compatibility information for the exact model. Prices, eligible models and activation flows change, so none are quoted here.
