A 120 Hz TV is useful when a compatible game and console can output above 60 FPS; it does not turn a game running at 60 FPS into one producing 120 distinct frames.
What FPS and refresh rate actually mean
Frames per second (FPS) describes how many new images a game renders each second. Hertz (Hz) describes how many times a display refreshes each second. They are related, but they describe different parts of the system.

A steady 60 FPS signal is within the capability of a 60 Hz display. On a 120 Hz display, a 60 FPS game’s frame may be shown across two refreshes. The TV does not create a second game-rendered frame. Motion interpolation, when available, is separate image processing and is not equivalent to native 120 FPS gameplay.

When a 120 Hz TV makes a difference
Playing compatible games above 60 FPS
A 120 Hz TV can show the additional frames when the console, game mode, connection, and TV all support a 120 Hz signal. Xbox Series X supports up to 120 FPS as an option for developers, but whether a particular game uses it depends on that game’s modes. PlayStation’s PS5 guidance likewise describes 120 Hz output for TVs and games that support it. See PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guide and Xbox’s explanation of next-generation gaming features.

Potentially different signal-transmission timing
Microsoft says HDMI frame transmission takes 16.6 ms at 60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 120 Hz, and that the shorter transmission time can benefit games at all frame rates. This is Microsoft’s technical explanation of transmission timing—not a measurement of total input lag, nor a promise that every 120 Hz TV will feel more responsive than every 60 Hz TV. Overall responsiveness also depends on the game, console output, TV processing, Game Mode, and the full signal path. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X latency article provides the timing figures and setup discussion.
VRR and ALLM are separate from frame rate
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh with a game’s changing frame output, helping reduce tearing and maintain smooth presentation. It is most useful when frame delivery varies; it does not make a 60 FPS game render more frames and is not required for a steady 60 FPS signal. Xbox describes VRR as synchronizing display refresh to game frame rate, while PlayStation notes that PS5 VRR requires a compatible display and that results vary by TV and game. See PlayStation’s PS5 features overview.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is another distinct feature: on compatible equipment, it can switch the TV into a lower-latency mode. Neither ALLM nor VRR is a substitute for a game’s actual frame rate. Compatibility depends on the TV and the rest of the setup.
How to decide whether to upgrade
- If your goal is 60 FPS: a working 60 Hz TV is sufficient; you do not need to upgrade just to display 60 FPS.
- If you want more than 60 FPS: check whether the specific games you play offer a 120 FPS mode, then confirm your console, TV, and connection support that output.
- If you want smoother variable performance: check the TV’s VRR support and compatible range for your console and games.
- If responsiveness is the priority: look for measured input-lag results for the exact TV model in Game Mode. A 120 Hz label alone does not establish total input lag.
Confirm the TV’s native refresh rate and supported resolution at that rate. Marketing motion-rate labels can be ambiguous, so use the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model rather than assuming a motion label means native 120 Hz.

Check the whole connection, not just the TV
High-refresh support may depend on the particular HDMI port, the selected resolution, and whether an AV receiver or soundbar sits between the console and TV. Microsoft notes that some TVs support key HDMI features only on selected ports and recommends checking the TV manual. The PS5 resolution guide also lets you inspect the connected HDMI device’s capabilities.

- If using a receiver or soundbar, verify that it passes through the same video modes; otherwise, connect the console directly to the TV to isolate the issue.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the connected device’s capabilities and 120 Hz output setting. Sony says the 120 Hz option is for TVs and games that support 120 Hz.
- On Xbox, check the console’s video settings and the TV’s manual for the supported mode on the connected port. Microsoft’s guidance notes that an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is included with Xbox Series X; replacing a cable is relevant only if the existing cable or signal path cannot carry the desired mode.
