Usually, no—not unless your NAS workload, storage, client, and network path can all use the extra bandwidth. A 10GbE connection can move data far faster than 1GbE or 2.5GbE, but the link rate is not the same as a guaranteed file-copy speed. QNAP’s network-only reference is about 9.4 Gbps, or roughly 1.17 GB/s; actual transfers depend on the NAS and the rest of the setup.
What speeds can you expect from 1GbE and 10GbE?
Ethernet link rates are measured in gigabits per second (Gbps); file-transfer rates are usually shown in megabytes or gigabytes per second (MB/s or GB/s). Since one byte is eight bits, 9.4 Gbps is about 1.175 GB/s before rounding. These figures describe different units, not different performance claims.

| Connection or test | Published result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1GbE, network-only iperf3 | About 940 Mbps, or 117 MB/s | QNAP’s expected network-test figure; SMB or other file transfers may be slower. QNAP troubleshooting guidance |
| 10GbE, network-only iperf3 | About 9.4 Gbps, or 1.17 GB/s | A network-layer reference, not a promise that a NAS file copy will reach this rate. QNAP troubleshooting guidance |
| 10GbE SMB on selected NAS models | About 1,177–1,181 MB/s on some single-link configurations | QNAP’s model-specific vendor test results, not a universal result for every NAS, drive array, client, or file workload. QNAP TS-1264U-RP and TS-664 performance data |
The practical takeaway is that 10GbE offers a much higher network ceiling than 1GbE, but your usable file speed is set by the slowest part of the transfer path. A NAS may not reach the network ceiling if its disks, RAID layout, processor, client, protocol, or workload cannot keep up.

When is 10GbE worth it for a NAS?
It can help with sustained, large transfers
Large sequential reads and writes are more likely than small, scattered file operations to take advantage of extra bandwidth. Fast shared workloads may also benefit when several devices are transferring data at once. Whether they do depends on how the NAS, clients, and network are configured.

- 10 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the latest 10GBase-T Technology, TX401 delivers extreme speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is 10× faster than typical Gigabit adapters, guaranteeing smooth data transmissions for both internet access and local data transmissions[1]
- Versatile Compatibility: With extreme speed and ultra-low latency, 10GBase-T is backwards compatible with multiple data rates (10 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps), automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections
- QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
- Free CAT6A Ethernet Cable: To maximize TX401's performance, a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet Cable is included—rated for up to 10 Gbps while a regular cable is only rated for 1 Gbps
- Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases
It may not change light or storage-limited workloads
If your ordinary NAS use already fits within your current connection, moving to 10GbE may make little practical difference. Small files, light single-user access, or a storage array that cannot supply data fast enough can remain slow even over a faster link. The vendor results available here do not establish a universal workload threshold or a price-based rule for deciding who needs 10GbE.
The whole path must support the faster connection
A useful upgrade requires compatible network interfaces at both the NAS and client, plus a path that negotiates at the intended speed. That path may include a switch; a direct NAS-to-client connection may avoid one in some setups. A compatible NAS network card is relevant only if the specific NAS model supports its expansion slot and port type. Replacing a NAS with a model that has built-in or supported 10GbE is another option, but any throughput claim should be tied to that model and its test setup.

- NAS: Confirm it has a built-in 10GbE port or supports a compatible network card.
- Client: Confirm the computer or workstation has a matching interface.
- Network path: Check that the connection between the endpoints can negotiate 10GbE; a switch may be needed for multiple devices.
- Storage and processor: Consider whether the NAS can read or write data quickly enough to use the added bandwidth.
- Workload: Consider the size and pattern of files and whether one or several clients transfer data concurrently.
Can multiple links replace or outperform one 10GbE link?
Sometimes—but the result depends on support and configuration at both ends, and aggregate capacity does not guarantee a faster transfer for every client or workload.

Multichannel is not simply a matter of plugging in more cables: the NAS, client, and software configuration must support it. Compare the benchmark’s NAS model and setup with your own before treating its result as a likely outcome.

How to diagnose a slow NAS transfer before upgrading
- Check the negotiated link speed and duplex on both endpoints. Confirm that the NAS-to-client path actually negotiated at 10GbE. QNAP warns that a 10GbE NIC negotiated down to 1GbE or lower will cap throughput at approximately 117 MB/s. QNAP troubleshooting guidance
- Test the network separately with iperf3. Do this before using SMB results to diagnose network capacity. QNAP’s example includes a single-stream test and a four-stream run for aggregation testing; interpret the result in light of the configuration being tested. QNAP iperf3 procedure
- If the network test is healthy, check the file-transfer path. Examine local NAS disk throughput, the storage layout, protocol settings, client capability, and the workload. A healthy network-only test does not establish that SMB or storage can sustain the same rate. QNAP troubleshooting guidance
- Change MTU or other tuning only with a matching path configuration. QNAP’s procedure includes an MTU test example, but a jumbo-frame setting must be consistent across the network path; changing one device alone can cause connectivity or performance problems. QNAP MTU test guidance
How should you judge vendor NAS benchmarks?
Published SMB results show what a particular NAS achieved under a particular test setup, not what all systems will achieve. QNAP publishes model-specific results for the TS-1264U-RP and TS-664. Synology likewise publishes sequential SMB results and describes its test environment, including a 10GbE connection and the E10G18-T2 network card, on its NAS performance page.
Before comparing a benchmark with your own NAS, check the model, connection arrangement, storage, test type, and whether the figure is a read or write result. A sequential SMB benchmark is not a prediction for small-file access, a different RAID layout, or a client with a slower network interface.
