The change happens at 2 a.m. local daylight time, when clocks return to 1 a.m. standard time. It does not happen before trick-or-treating on Halloween night.
When do clocks fall back in 2026?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) lists November 1 as the end of daylight saving time in 2026. At 2 a.m. local time, clocks go back to 1 a.m., repeating the hour between 1 and 2. That is why the change is often described as gaining an hour overnight. NIST’s daylight saving time rules give the dates and explain the change.
Because the clock change is after Halloween night, it does not move trick-or-treating earlier or later on October 31.
Does every U.S. location change its clocks?
No. The dates above apply to places that observe daylight saving time. The U.S. Department of Transportation says states may exempt themselves under the Uniform Time Act. Hawaii, most of Arizona, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not observe daylight saving time. Check local time rules if you are planning across state or territory lines. The Department of Transportation lists the exceptions.

What time is trick-or-treating on Halloween?
There is no nationwide trick-or-treat start or end time established in the guidance cited here. Hours and organized events are set locally and can vary by community. Check your city or town’s official website, school notices, or the event organizer’s announcement for October 31 hours and any registration requirements.
How to plan for a safer Halloween night
Low light, busy streets, and distracted drivers make visibility and predictable routes important. The Alabama Department of Public Health’s October 1, 2026 guidance recommends these practical precautions; local conditions and advice may differ.

- Go in a group on familiar routes or accompany children with a trusted adult.
- Add reflective tape to costumes, bags, or accessories, and carry a flashlight.
- Walk rather than run. Use sidewalks; if there is no sidewalk, walk at the edge of the road facing traffic.
- Watch for vehicles and cross at intersections or marked crosswalks. Avoid crossing between parked cars or near driveways where drivers may have limited visibility.
Alabama Department of Public Health Halloween guidance and the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Halloween safety guidance also recommend visibility measures such as flashlights and reflective details.

- Choose costumes labeled flame resistant and avoid loose, billowing material around candles or other ignition sources, following CPSC guidance.
- Have an adult inspect treats before children eat them. Discard items with broken seals, favor factory-wrapped treats, and check allergen labels when relevant.
- For young children, remove or avoid treats that could pose a choking hazard.
