The available trials tested leave-on lotions, gels, or creams instead of patches, and their results cannot be transferred automatically to a patch. Some formulations produced limited improvements in selected lower-eyelid measurements, but none of the studies established how long a patch benefit lasts or whether an effect remains after use stops.
That distinction matters because “vitamin C” describes several different ingredients and concentrations. A 10% sodium-ascorbate lotion, a gel containing 0.1% vitamin C alongside three other actives, and a cream using tetrahexyldecyl (THD) ascorbate are not interchangeable products.

What the evidence says about vitamin C eye patches
The cited clinical literature leaves a format-specific evidence gap: no study in this set applied a vitamin C patch to the under-eye area. Instead, researchers evaluated products that remain on the skin as lotions, gels, or creams. Those studies can show what happened with particular formulas under particular protocols; they cannot prove that a hydrogel, fabric, or other patch will produce the same result.
The most defensible answer is therefore conditional. A vitamin C product may improve a measured aspect of under-eye appearance in some circumstances, but the cited evidence does not establish that patches do so. It also does not provide a reliable timetable for visible change from a patch.

Under-eye circles and puffiness can have multiple contributing mechanisms. A study of a combination product may report a change without identifying which ingredient, or which biological pathway, was responsible. That is why a positive result for a cream containing vitamin C, peptides, botanicals, or caffeine should not be presented as proof of vitamin C-patch efficacy.
What each clinical study actually tested
The studies differ in product format, vitamin C form, co-ingredients, participant numbers, treatment length, and outcome measurements. Reading those details prevents a cream result from being mistaken for patch evidence.
| Study | Product and vitamin C details | Participants | Treatment schedule | Reported measurements and findings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ohshima et al., 2009 | Leave-on lotion applied to one side of the face: either 10% sodium ascorbate or ascorbic-acid glucoside; the opposite side received vehicle. | 14 people with lower-eyelid dark circles. | Six months. | The sodium-ascorbate side had a significantly smaller change in erythema index than vehicle. Dermal thickness tended to be greater but was not significantly different. The ascorbic-acid-glucoside side showed no significant difference from vehicle in erythema index, melanin index, or dermal thickness. |
| Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2007 | Leave-on gel containing 2% phytonadione, 0.1% retinol, 0.1% vitamin C, and 0.1% vitamin E. | 57 Japanese adults with dark circles and lower-eyelid wrinkles. | Twice daily for eight weeks. | 27 of 57 participants (47%) were reported to have reductions in haemostasis. Pigmentation was not clearly removed. The open-label, uncontrolled design and four active ingredients prevent attribution to vitamin C alone. |
| Rajabi-Estarabadi et al., 2024 | Multi-ingredient eye cream containing THD ascorbate, peptides, botanicals, chrysin, and caffeine. | 40 women aged 35–60 enrolled; 37 completed. Participants had specified under-eye concerns. | 12 weeks. | The authors reported improvements in assessments of dark circles and puffiness. The open-label study did not test patches or isolate vitamin C, and the manufacturer was affiliated with the study. |
The 2009 trial is the closest of these studies to an isolated vitamin C question because it compared two vitamin C lotion formulations with vehicle on the other side of the face. Even there, the outcomes diverged by chemical form: sodium ascorbate showed a statistically significant erythema-index difference, while ascorbic-acid glucoside did not show significant differences in the listed measures. That is not a universal result for every vitamin C ingredient.

The 2007 gel study cannot identify vitamin C as the cause of the reported change because phytonadione, retinol, and vitamin E were used at the same time. It also had no control group, so changes could reflect factors other than the gel.
The 2024 cream study is newer but still answers a narrower question: whether that particular multi-ingredient cream was associated with improvements during 12 weeks of use. It does not test a patch, and its design cannot separate the contribution of THD ascorbate from the other ingredients.
Why a leave-on cream result does not prove a patch result
Format is part of the intervention. A leave-on lotion or cream has a stated composition and is spread over the skin, whereas a patch introduces a different delivery system, contact area, wear time, backing material, and removal step. Unless a controlled study evaluates the patch itself, there is no basis for assuming that the same ingredient reaches the skin in the same way or produces the same measured outcome.

Claims should therefore be matched to the exact product tested. Evidence for a lotion supports, at most, a claim about that lotion or a very closely matched formulation. Evidence for a multi-ingredient cream supports a claim about that tested combination. Neither supports a general statement that vitamin C eye patches reduce dark circles, wrinkles, or puffiness.

The studies used different forms: sodium ascorbate, ascorbic-acid glucoside, vitamin C listed at 0.1% in a combination gel, and THD ascorbate in the 2024 cream. Their concentrations and surrounding formulas also differed. A product label that simply says “vitamin C” does not tell you which form was studied or whether its concentration resembles a clinical formulation.
Combination formulas create attribution problems
When several actives are applied together, an observed change belongs to the tested formula, not automatically to one ingredient. This is especially important for under-eye products, where a study may assess several visible features at once. The 2007 and 2024 studies both illustrate why a favorable result cannot be converted into a vitamin-C-only claim.

How long do results last?
The cited sources do not establish how long results from vitamin C eye patches last. They report treatment schedules of eight weeks, six months, and 12 weeks for different leave-on products. Those durations describe how long participants used the products during the studies; they are not evidence that a benefit continued for eight weeks, six months, or 12 weeks after treatment stopped.
None of the cited studies provides a validated post-use follow-up for patches. They therefore cannot answer whether an apparent improvement fades immediately, persists for a period, or requires continued application. A claim such as “results last 30 days” would need a study that measures participants after discontinuation; these sources do not provide one.

Do the study schedules predict when a patch will work?
No. The eight-week, six-month, and 12-week regimens belong to different products and study designs. They should not be treated as a universal waiting period for patches, nor as a promise that a patch will show a result by a particular day. A treatment schedule is not a durability measurement.

How to evaluate a vitamin C eye-patch claim
Use the following checks before treating a product claim as clinically supported:
- Check the format. Confirm that the cited trial used the same kind of under-eye patch, not a cream, lotion, or gel.
- Identify the vitamin C form. Look for the named derivative, such as sodium ascorbate or THD ascorbate, rather than assuming all forms are equivalent.
- Find the concentration. Compare the disclosed percentage with the tested formulation. The 2009 study used 10% sodium ascorbate; the 2007 gel listed 0.1% vitamin C.
- List every active ingredient. Peptides, retinol, phytonadione, vitamin E, botanicals, chrysin, and caffeine can make a formula a combination treatment.
- Ask what was measured. Erythema index, melanin index, dermal thickness, pigmentation, puffiness, wrinkles, and visual assessments are different outcomes.
- Look for a comparator. The 2009 split-face design used vehicle on the other side. By contrast, the 2007 and 2024 studies were open-label, so they offer weaker protection against expectation and uncontrolled-change effects.
- Check follow-up after stopping. A study must assess participants after treatment ends to support a persistence claim. The cited studies do not do this for patches.
- Read the population and setting. Results from 14 participants, 57 Japanese adults, or 40 women aged 35–60 apply to those study populations and products, not automatically to every shopper.
What the individual findings mean for common concerns
Dark circles and pigmentation
The 2009 study measured erythema and melanin indices as well as dermal thickness. Only the sodium-ascorbate lotion showed the reported significant erythema-index difference; the ascorbic-acid-glucoside lotion did not show significant differences in the listed indices compared with vehicle. In the 2007 combination-gel study, pigmentation was not clearly removed. These findings do not support a blanket claim that a vitamin C patch erases dark circles.
Puffiness
The 2024 cream study reported improvements in assessments of dark circles and puffiness after 12 weeks, but the product also contained peptides, botanicals, chrysin, and caffeine. Because there was no patch arm and no isolation of THD ascorbate, the result supports only a cautious statement about that multi-ingredient cream during the study period.
Wrinkles and skin thickness
The 2007 study included lower-eyelid wrinkles but tested a combination gel. The 2009 study measured dermal thickness; it reported a tendency toward greater thickness on the sodium-ascorbate side, without a statistically significant difference. Neither result establishes that a vitamin C patch smooths wrinkles or thickens under-eye skin.
What a careful product description can and cannot say
A description can accurately state that vitamin C has been studied in selected leave-on under-eye formulations, provided it names the formulation and outcome and avoids implying patch evidence. It can also say that the cited literature does not establish post-use persistence.
It should not state that clinical studies prove vitamin C eye patches work, that all vitamin C derivatives perform alike, that a patch removes pigmentation, or that benefits last a specified number of days or weeks. Those statements go beyond the designs and results reported in the cited sources.
