A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter needs a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) when the phone, tablet or computer sends digital audio over USB-C. A passive adapter can work only when that specific host supports USB-C analog audio accessory mode. Because USB-C does not guarantee either mode, compatibility depends on the exact host model.
What the adapter has to do
Traditional headphones with a 3.5 mm plug expect an analog left-and-right audio signal. USB-C, however, is a digital connector by default: a host can send audio as data rather than as an already converted waveform. Something in the signal path must turn those digital samples into the voltage that drives the headphone speakers.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That conversion is performed by a DAC. In a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, the DAC may be inside the small dongle, inside a larger hub, or inside the host device if the host exposes analog audio through USB-C accessory mode. The 3.5 mm plug itself contains no DAC.
Consequently, the question is not whether the headphone plug is 3.5 mm. The question is which audio mode the USB-C host implements and whether the adapter matches it.

The two USB-C audio paths
Digital USB audio: an active DAC adapter
With digital USB audio, the host sends audio data over the USB connection. An adapter with its own audio circuitry receives that stream, converts two output channels from digital to analog, and presents the resulting left and right signals at the 3.5 mm jack.
Android’s documented USB-C-to-analog adapter type also supports one analog input channel for a headset microphone. Its specification covers insertion and microphone detection, output-impedance detection, and translation of headset button presses into HID events. Those capabilities are separate from the basic DAC function, so an adapter can have a DAC yet still lack microphone or remote-button support.
This is the path an active, DAC-equipped adapter is designed for. It is powered through USB-C and appears to the host as a USB audio device. The host’s operating system handles the digital stream; the adapter handles the final conversion and analog output.

USB Type-C also defines an analog audio accessory mode. In that mode, the host routes analog headset signals onto designated USB-C connector pins. A simple adapter can connect those pins to a 3.5 mm socket without converting digital data, because the signal is already analog before it reaches the adapter.

The USB Type-C specification describes this mode as multiplexing four analog audio signals onto connector pins. A passive adapter therefore contains routing and wiring rather than a USB audio DAC. It is inexpensive and consumes little or no power, but it works only when the host explicitly supports the accessory mode and enables it for the connected device.
The specification says a host implementing analog audio accessory mode shall also support USB Type-C digital audio with nominally equivalent functionality and performance. That requirement describes a host that chooses to implement the analog mode; it does not mean every USB-C phone, tablet or computer provides it. A USB-C socket by itself is not evidence of analog-audio support.
Why the same adapter works on one device and fails on another
USB-C defines the connector and electrical functions, not a universal headphone behavior. Manufacturers can omit analog accessory mode, require a digital USB audio device, or implement additional detection rules. Two devices with identical-looking USB-C ports can therefore require different adapters.
A passive adapter connected to a digital-only host usually produces no sound because it is waiting for analog signals that the host never places on the accessory pins. An active DAC adapter can work on a host that supports USB audio, but compatibility still depends on the operating system, headset wiring, microphone support and the adapter’s USB implementation.

Android’s platform documentation is especially clear about its documented adapter type: “Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed.” This statement applies to the Android USB-C-to-analog adapter specification; it should not be generalized to every USB-C host or to every platform’s hardware design.
What Samsung says about Galaxy phones
Samsung UK’s support guidance, updated August 12, 2026, says that some Galaxy devices require a USB Type-C-to-3.5 mm headset-jack converter with a built-in DAC. It advises checking that a third-party adapter is DAC-compatible and identifies Samsung’s own converter as an option.
This is model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a rule that covers all Galaxy products or all USB-C devices. Before buying, check the support page or specifications for the exact Galaxy model and region. A listing that merely says “USB-C to 3.5 mm” is not enough evidence that it contains the required audio electronics.

How to determine which adapter you need
- Identify the exact host model. Record the complete phone, tablet, laptop or desktop model number, not just the product family. Different generations can change audio support.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation. Look for explicit references to USB audio, a USB-C digital-audio adapter, analog audio accessory mode, or a required DAC converter.
- Classify the expected signal path. If the documentation says the host outputs digital USB audio, select an adapter that explicitly includes a DAC. If it explicitly supports analog audio accessory mode, a passive adapter may work.
- Match headset functions. If you need a microphone, inline buttons or a four-pole headset, confirm those functions in the adapter’s specification. Stereo playback alone does not establish microphone or control compatibility.
- Check physical and power requirements. A single-purpose dongle may be sufficient for headphones. A multiport adapter may add charging or other connectors, but each added function requires compatibility with the host and operating system.
- Use the return policy as a safeguard. Compatibility cannot be inferred from the connector’s shape. Keep the packaging and verify playback, microphone input and controls immediately after purchase.
Active versus passive adapters
| Characteristic | Active DAC adapter | Passive analog adapter |
|---|---|---|
| Signal received from host | Digital USB audio data | Analog signals on USB-C accessory-mode pins |
| DAC inside adapter | Yes | No |
| Works with a digital-only USB-C audio host | Generally the required design, subject to model and operating-system compatibility | No |
| Works with analog audio accessory mode | Not necessarily; verify the adapter and host behavior | Yes, when the host explicitly supports the mode |
| Microphone and headset buttons | Possible, but must be stated by the adapter specification | Dependent on the host’s analog-mode implementation and wiring |
| Power use | Draws power from USB-C for its electronics | Typically no conversion power; it is primarily a signal-routing accessory |
The table describes design roles, not a guarantee for a particular product. A manufacturer can add circuitry, omit headset features or impose device restrictions, so the exact model remains decisive.

Choosing a DAC adapter without overpaying for the wrong features
Confirm the DAC claim
Look for “built-in DAC,” “digital audio,” or explicit USB audio compatibility in the technical specification. “Headphone adapter” alone is ambiguous because it may describe either an active or passive design.
Verify output and input support
For music or video, confirm stereo output. For calls, gaming chat or voice recording, confirm microphone input. If your headphones have volume, play/pause or call buttons, verify that the adapter translates those events; Android’s specification treats button handling as a distinct function.
Do not infer sound quality from the word DAC
A DAC is a functional requirement when the host sends digital audio, not proof of a particular sonic performance. The available documentation establishes the conversion path and compatibility requirements, not a universal audible-quality ranking among adapters.

Consider hubs and charging cautiously
An adapter that also provides charging or other ports may be useful, but those functions introduce additional host-specific requirements. Confirm that simultaneous charging and audio are supported for your model rather than assuming that every USB-C hub behaves the same way.

Common symptoms and what they mean
No sound with a passive dongle
The most likely explanation is that the host does not provide analog audio accessory mode, or that it does not detect that particular passive wiring. Replace it with a DAC-equipped USB audio adapter specified for the host. If the host documentation explicitly promises analog mode, inspect the plug, jack and adapter for physical damage before concluding that the mode is absent.
Sound works but the microphone does not
Playback and microphone input are separate paths. Check whether the adapter supports a headset microphone and whether your headset uses the expected four-pole wiring. Android’s adapter requirements include microphone detection, but an individual product may not implement every function.
Buttons do nothing
Inline controls require the adapter and host to recognize headset button events. Confirm that button support is listed rather than assuming that a working left and right audio channel implies control support.

Different operating systems and hardware can expose different USB audio or accessory-mode capabilities. Recheck the phone’s exact model documentation and the adapter’s compatibility list. A successful test on one host does not establish universal compatibility.
Intermittent connection or repeated reconnects
Reseat the USB-C plug, remove a thick case that prevents full insertion, and test another known-good adapter or headset. If the problem follows the adapter, its connector or electronics may be defective. If it occurs with multiple adapters, inspect the host port and its documented USB-audio support.
Does moving the DAC outside the phone improve sound?
Android’s USB digital-audio documentation notes that placing the DAC on an external circuit board can isolate the final analog stages from a noisy device circuit board. This is a design rationale for external conversion, not evidence that every external DAC sounds better than every internal one. Actual results depend on the implementation, power, analog output stage and headphones.
A practical decision guide
- The host explicitly requires a DAC: buy an active USB-C adapter with a built-in DAC and verify headset features.
- The host explicitly supports analog audio accessory mode: a passive adapter can be appropriate if you need only the functions the host exposes.
- The documentation is silent or unclear: choose a DAC-equipped adapter from a listing that names your exact host model, and make sure returns are possible.
- You need calls or controls: treat microphone detection and button events as required specifications, not optional bonuses.
What to remember
USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapters do not all perform the same job. Digital USB audio requires a DAC somewhere between the USB data stream and the analog headphone jack. Analog audio accessory mode allows a passive adapter, but only on hosts that implement that mode. Android’s documented adapter type permits digital-to-analog adapters, and Samsung says some Galaxy models require a DAC-equipped converter. Check the exact host model and the headset functions you need before buying.
