Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

If a game renders on one display and the other is idle, the monitor count alone does not establish a meaningful FPS penalty. The answer can change if the game spans both screens, the second screen is running graphics-heavy content, or displays and the game use different graphics devices. There is no universal percentage that applies to every PC.
When a second monitor is unlikely to affect game FPS
Microsoft’s Win32 documentation says multiple-monitor support does not affect application performance when an application runs in a single-display environment. This is useful guidance for a common setup: the game stays on the primary monitor and Windows extends the desktop to an otherwise idle second screen. It is documented behavior, not a current benchmark covering every GPU, driver, game, and display configuration.

That means connecting another display does not, by itself, prove that a game will lose frames. A change you observe should be investigated in the context of what the computer is rendering and how the displays are configured.

When a multi-monitor setup can change the workload
The game spans both displays
A game stretched across multiple screens is not the same workload as a game rendered on one screen beside an extended desktop. Microsoft warns that performance may be greatly affected when a graphics-intensive application spans multiple displays. AMD’s Eyefinity technology combines two or more displays into one large desktop surface, illustrating how a multi-display gaming setup can change the rendered area. The actual effect depends on the game and hardware; the cited documentation does not give a universal FPS figure.

The second screen is doing work
Video playback, animated pages, browser content, capture, or another rendering task can add activity while a game is running. Treat that as additional workload to investigate, rather than assuming the physical monitor is responsible. The available official sources do not quantify how much any particular second-screen app changes FPS.
Displays use different graphics devices
Microsoft also notes that performance can be affected in a multi-monitor system when an application runs on only one of multiple graphics devices. If a PC has more than one graphics device, check which one drives each display and which one renders the game before drawing conclusions from a frame-rate change.

What the documented NVIDIA clock caveat does—and does not—mean
NVIDIA documents a legacy full-clock behavior for driving multiple displays on GPUs before the GeForce 600 series; it says GeForce 600-series and later are not affected by that particular limitation. This is a narrow, generation-specific note about clock behavior. It is not an FPS-loss statistic, and it does not establish that every newer multi-monitor configuration has zero performance or power impact.

- Record a baseline. Choose a repeatable scene and note the game’s graphics settings, resolution, display mode, and average FPS. If your measurement tool supports it, record percentile FPS as well; NVIDIA FrameView lists average and percentile FPS among its measurements.
- Record the display setup. Note whether Windows is extending or duplicating the displays, each screen’s resolution and refresh rate, their arrangement, and whether the game is windowed, borderless, fullscreen, or spanning screens. Windows’ display settings provide controls for these options.
- Change only the second display. Disable or disconnect the second screen, then repeat the same scene and measurement without changing the game workload or primary-screen settings.
- Compare results across repeat runs. Look for a consistent difference in average or percentile FPS, rather than treating one run as proof. The method helps diagnose your PC; it does not predict a universal penalty for other systems.
- If FPS changes, isolate the cause. First check whether the game spans displays, whether the second screen is playing or rendering content, and whether the displays and game use different graphics devices. Change one factor at a time and repeat the comparison.
Windows display settings to record
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display to review the display arrangement and choose how screens are used, such as extending or duplicating them. Select a display and open Advanced display to review its refresh rate. These controls help you document a test configuration; changing them is not, by itself, a guaranteed way to increase FPS.

The cited official documentation describes specific behaviors and measurement capabilities, but it is not a controlled, modern benchmark isolating monitor count across current gaming PCs. Results can differ with the game’s workload, display configuration, graphics-device routing, and activity on the second screen. For that reason, a fixed percentage would overstate what the evidence establishes. Measure your own setup under matched conditions instead.
