Squid do have microscopic sensory cells with hair-like structures, but they are not covered in visible hairs. These cells sit in particular sensory organs, including the statocyst, where they help detect movement. The resemblance to cells in your inner ear is about their structure and sensory role—not evidence that squid have human-like ears or fur.
What does “hair cell” mean in a squid?
In biology, a hair cell is a sensory cell with tiny projections called cilia. The word “hair” describes these microscopic structures; it does not mean a strand of hair growing from the animal’s skin. Squid hair cells occur in specific sensory areas, not as a body-wide coat.

One such organ is the statocyst, which senses linear and angular acceleration. Its mechanosensitive hair cells resemble cells in vertebrate vestibular and auditory systems. As Alexandra L. Scharr and colleagues put it in their 2014 study, “The statocyst contains mechano-sensitive hair cells that resemble hair cells in the vestibular and auditory systems of other animals.” Read the study abstract on PubMed.
How do statocyst hair cells detect movement?
In squid and cuttlefish, the statocyst includes cristae—strips of sensory hair cells and associated neurons. A sail-like cupula is connected to the underlying sensory cells through cilia. When movement shifts the cupula, it bends or moves those structures and stimulates the cells. This gives the animal sensory information about motion and orientation.

The statocyst is also considered the best candidate organ for mediating squid auditory responses, but that is not the same as saying squid hear in the same way humans do. The comparison is useful because of the similarity between sensory cell types; it does not establish human-like ears or hearing. Chrachri and Williamson’s study of squid statocyst hair cells describes interactions among cells in the cristae.
Some squid also have hair cells in the neck
A separate study identified proprioceptive hair cells in the neck of Lolliguncula brevis. These cells lie beneath the nuchal cartilage and have kinocilia—long cilia used in sensory structures. In the studied animals, each cell carried up to 300 kinocilia, about 30 microns long, arranged in up to seven rows.

The study’s behavioral findings support a role for this neck receptor organ, together with visual input and the statocyst, in controlling head-to-body position. These details apply to the species and sensory area examined; they should not be treated as a general count or arrangement for every squid. See Preuss and Budelmann’s study on PubMed.

No. Chromatophores and iridophores are skin structures involved in color and iridescence, not the statocyst’s sensory hair cells. A 2012 Marine Biological Laboratory report describes chromatophores as pigment organs that produce yellow, red, and brown patterns, while underlying iridophores reflect colors including blue, green, and pink.

In the report’s experiment with longfin inshore squid, electrically stimulating traced nerves produced progressive iridophore color shifts from red and orange to yellow, green, and blue in 15 seconds. That is the reported result for that experiment, not a general speed for color changes in squid. Read the Marine Biological Laboratory report.

Scharr and colleagues studied statocyst hair cells in longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii). They injected anesthetized animals with saline or neomycin at concentrations from 0.05 to 3.0 mmol l-1, then examined a statocyst sensory area five hours later. In neomycin-treated animals, hair-cell bundles were missing or damaged, and the degree of damage depended on dose.

This was a controlled laboratory experiment on one squid species. It does not establish effects from ordinary antibiotic exposure in people, effects in wild squid, or the same response across all squid species. The study details are available on PubMed.
