Not all smart rings require a subscription. Oura requires membership for Gen3 and newer rings to access the full set of features, while Samsung says Galaxy Ring health data can be viewed in Samsung Health without a subscription fee. What happens when you cancel depends on the brand—and canceling a fee is not necessarily the same as deleting your account or data.
Do smart rings need a subscription?
There is no subscription rule that applies to every smart ring. The documented policies differ even between major brands:

These examples do not establish the cancellation or post-cancellation rules for every ring maker. Check the current terms for the specific brand and generation before buying, particularly if ongoing app access matters to you.

First distinguish three actions: stopping membership billing, keeping or closing the account, and requesting deletion of stored data. A cancellation may change what features or connections you can use without automatically deleting your account.

If you cancel Oura Membership
Oura says that if you cancel membership but do not delete your account, your Oura data and account information remain saved under its privacy policy. You can download data through Membership Hub. See Oura’s membership guidance.
There is an access trade-off: Oura says Gen3 and later users without an active membership cannot access their data through the Oura API, including through partner applications. File downloads remain available. Oura’s API help page describes this restriction.
Keeping an account is not a promise of indefinite storage. Oura’s Privacy Policy says measurement data, such as sleep, readiness, and activity data, is stored only while the account is active, subject to legal retention obligations. Canceling membership and deleting the account are separate choices.

If you use Samsung Health
Samsung’s Singapore Galaxy Ring FAQ says ring health data is available in Samsung Health without a subscription fee; it also says data is transferred to Samsung Cloud connected to the account. That is not a local-only storage arrangement.
Samsung separately explains how to download or erase Samsung Health personal data. Its US support instructions say erasure permanently removes Samsung Health data stored on the phone or tablet, in the app, and on Samsung Health’s server; the process may take time. This is a deletion procedure, not evidence that any subscription cancellation automatically deletes data. See Samsung’s US data download and erasure instructions.

- Stop billing but keep your Oura account: cancel membership without deleting the account. Oura says account information and data remain saved while the account remains active, and data can be downloaded through Membership Hub.
- Keep a copy: use the brand’s available export or download controls before closing an account or erasing data. For Oura, the documented download route is Membership Hub.
- Remove stored data: use the brand’s account-deletion or data-erasure process. Oura documents account deletion separately from membership cancellation; Samsung’s US Samsung Health erase instructions describe a separate data-removal flow.
- Keep connected services working: check whether cancellation ends API or partner-app access. Oura says Gen3 and later users without active membership lose access through its API and partner applications.
For Oura, the membership help page reflects changes made after Oura on the Web was discontinued on October 5, 2026: it directs users to the app for data and Membership Hub for downloads.

What to check for other smart-ring brands
Do not assume that Oura’s membership, export, or retention rules apply to another ring. Policies for RingConn and Ultrahuman are not established by the official materials cited here. Before purchasing or canceling, check the specific product’s current terms for recurring fees, what remains available without membership, data export, account closure, and deletion.
