Usually, no—not by default. A small business should first control what each AI agent can access and do: limit permissions, require human approval for consequential actions, and monitor and test its behavior. Whether a specialist product or service is warranted depends on the agent’s access and the potential impact of misuse—not on business size alone.
Why AI agents need security controls
An AI agent can use tools and interact with systems, so its permissions and the information it receives are part of the security boundary. OWASP identifies risks including prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, and supply-chain risks in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Many protections draw on familiar cybersecurity practices, but applying them to agents may require adaptation. NIST’s May 18, 2026 analysis of stakeholder responses found broad agreement on that point; it is a synthesis of responses, not a controlled estimate of how often businesses experience agent-related incidents. NIST also issued a request for information on securing AI agent systems in January 2026.
When the risk is higher
Assess each agent by what it can reach and what it can change. A constrained agent with no sensitive access creates a different control problem from one that can access confidential records, send messages, alter business data, or move money.

There is no small-business incident-rate statistic in the cited materials that establishes how commonly these risks occur. OWASP’s 2025 Agentic Applications Top 10 was developed with contributions from more than 100 researchers, practitioners, organizations, and technology providers; that contributor count describes the project, not the prevalence of incidents.
Baseline protections before buying a product
Limit access to what the task requires
Give each agent only the tools and resources it needs. Separate read access from write access, avoid unnecessary administrative privileges, and require authorization for sensitive operations. Do not assume that an agent should inherit a human user’s full permissions.
Keep consequential actions under independent control
Require human review or another independent authorization step before sensitive or irreversible actions. OWASP recommends human oversight, validation, and separating decision-making from execution for high-impact operations. For example, an agent might prepare a payment or customer message for review rather than execute or send it autonomously.

Test and monitor the deployment
Test safeguards before production use, then repeat testing after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Monitor activity for abnormal behavior and unexpected privilege use. Logs should help investigate actions without unnecessarily recording credentials or personal data.
When dedicated help may be worthwhile
Consider specialist help when an agent can access sensitive information or take consequential actions and your team lacks the expertise to configure, test, or monitor it. A small-business cybersecurity assessment or managed security service with identity and access-control expertise may help implement appropriate controls. That is a service category to evaluate, not a requirement for every business or an endorsement of a particular provider.
NIST’s February 5, 2026 concept paper, Accelerating the Adoption of Software and Artificial Intelligence Agent Identity and Authorization, described a proposed standards project, not a completed standard or a product endorsement. Its public comment period closed April 2, 2026. The work reflects active attention to agent identity and authorization, but it does not establish that businesses need to buy a dedicated security product.

How to evaluate a security tool or service
If you are considering a specialist tool or service, ask whether it can:
Recommended Free Tools
- Scope each agent’s identity and permissions to specific tools and resources.
- Distinguish read-only access from write and administrative actions.
- Require approval for sensitive or irreversible operations.
- Provide useful audit logs and monitoring without exposing credentials or personal data.
- Support security testing and review when the agent’s configuration changes.
These criteria reflect OWASP’s practical controls and NIST’s focus on identity and authorization. A product that uses the word “agent security” is not automatically a fit: check which controls it actually provides and whether they cover the systems your agents use.
Quick Recap
A practical decision
- List the agent’s access. Identify its connected tools, data, and permissions, including any ability to write, send, approve, or administer.
- Reduce unnecessary privileges. Narrow access to the task, separate read from write permissions, and remove administrative access where it is not needed.
- Set approval boundaries. Require human authorization for sensitive or irreversible actions, and validate outputs before execution.
- Test and monitor. Test before production and after material changes; review logs and watch for unusual actions or privilege use.
- Escalate if the impact warrants it. If sensitive data or consequential actions are in scope and you cannot confidently implement and verify controls, seek qualified cybersecurity help or assess a specialist tool against the criteria above.
