Sometimes. Whether a failed screenshot request uses a credit depends on the provider and what failed. Some services exclude failed renders or return a reserved unit; that does not necessarily make invalid requests, rate-limit responses, or a client-side timeout free. Check the provider’s definition of a billable capture before relying on a refund.
What counts as a “failed request”?
An error response does not always mean the same thing for billing. A request can fail before a browser starts rendering, or a render can start and then fail. Providers may treat those events differently.
- Input or authentication error: The request is malformed, a required parameter is missing, or credentials are invalid. These are not necessarily treated as failed renders.
- Quota or rate-limit response: The account may have exhausted its allowance or exceeded a request-rate limit. A response may consume no monthly capture credit while still counting toward operational limits.
- Render failure: The provider’s browser cannot produce the requested image or PDF. Some providers explicitly refund or exclude this event.
- Client-side timeout: Your application stops waiting, but the provider may already have completed the capture. Retrying without checking status can create another successful capture.
For example, Screenshot API (screenshot-api.net) distinguishes 400 input errors, 401 authentication errors, 402 quota exhaustion, 429 rate limits, and 502 render failures. Its documentation says reserved units are released for 502 and 503 failures; that policy should not be read as a refund for every error code. Screenshot API documentation

| ScreenshotNeo | Only clean, freshly rendered shots count. Its listed exclusions include bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, selector or script/content errors, and cached results. | Its billing rule distinguishes clean shots from the listed unsuccessful or cached outcomes. | Screenshot API (screenshot-api.net) | Documentation says failed renders are not counted against quota and that a 502 or 503 releases the reserved unit. Its terms also describe returning the unit for renderer errors, timeouts, or target pages that are broken, block the service, or cannot be reached. | Quota exhaustion is described as 402 and rate-limit excess as 429; do not assume every 4xx or 429 is a refunded render. | screenshotapis.org | Its API reference says a 422 render failure is refunded. Its guide says the currently unavailable webhook callback returns 503 without charging a credit. | The webhook case is a separate event from a failed screenshot render. API reference · Webhook guide |
| APIScreenshot | Its pricing page says cached results and failed requests are never billed. | Plan allowances are provider-specific and may change. Pricing |
| ScreenshotDEV | Its pricing page says only successful API calls (2xx responses) are charged and failed screenshot or PDF renders do not count toward usage. | Check its current implementation and pricing definitions for which events qualify. Pricing |
| ScreenshotEngine | Failed requests do not count toward its successful-capture allowance. | Requests remain subject to rate limiting, and a client timeout followed by a retry can result in another successful, countable capture. Documentation |
How to check whether your request will be billed
- Find the provider’s definition of a successful capture. Look for its API reference, pricing page, or terms. Determine whether usage is based on successful HTTP responses, completed renders, or another event.
- Separate render errors from request errors. Check how the service treats invalid parameters, bad credentials, blocked URLs, exhausted quota, rate limits, and browser/render failures. A promise to refund a failed render may cover only particular status codes.
- Check cache accounting. Some services exclude cache hits from usage; others may define them differently. ScreenshotNeo, for example, says cached responses do not count.
- Check monthly usage and rate limits separately. No monthly capture credit does not mean unlimited requests per minute. A service can exclude failed captures from its allowance and still rate-limit them.
- Before retrying a timeout, check request status or usage records if available. A timeout at your end does not prove the provider failed to capture the page. Use a request ID or job status endpoint when the API offers one, and inspect usage logs before sending another capture.
Why a timeout can lead to duplicate usage
A client timeout only tells you that your application did not receive a response within its waiting period. The screenshot service may have finished rendering and billed a successful capture before the connection was lost. If you immediately retry, the second request may also succeed and count separately.
ScreenshotEngine explicitly warns about this timeout-and-retry case. Where supported, retain the provider’s request or job ID, query the job’s result before retrying, and use idempotency controls if the provider documents them. Do not assume an automatic retry is free simply because the first attempt ended in a client error.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its billing rule is straightforward: only clean, freshly rendered shots count; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache responses do not. Cookie banners and consent overlays are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. The MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools directly.

Billing-policy checklist before you integrate
- Record which outcomes consume monthly capture allowance and which merely count toward request-rate limits.
- Confirm whether renderer errors, unavailable target pages, bot checks, blank pages, and cache hits have explicit billing treatment.
- Find out whether failed units are excluded at once or first reserved and later released.
- Set client timeouts with the provider’s documented render times in mind; do not treat a local timeout as proof of a failed capture.
- Review the policy when changing provider, plan, or API configuration, since terms and plan definitions can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HTTP 500 always mean a screenshot API request is free?
No. The provider’s billing policy determines whether a particular status code represents a refunded render, a request error, or another event.
Can a retry after a timeout be charged twice?
It can be, if the first capture completed successfully on the server and the retry also produces a successful capture. Check job status or usage records before retrying when possible.
