What kind of compass does a Samsung phone have?
Samsung’s support instructions describe a Compass panel available through the Edge panel. The tool needs location data enabled, and it may need calibration for stable readings. This is a phone feature, not a requirement to buy a separate compass.

Hardware can differ by model: Samsung’s Galaxy S25 specifications list a geomagnetic sensor, but that example does not prove that every Samsung phone has one. Check your phone’s model-specific specifications and regional support page before assuming a compass feature is available. Samsung notes that menus and settings can vary by model, software version, provider, and purchase market in its Compass Quick tool troubleshooting guidance.
How to open and calibrate the compass
- Enable location data. Samsung’s Compass Quick tool instructions require Use location data to be enabled.
- Open the Compass panel. Open the Edge panel, then select the Compass panel. The exact menu labels or availability may differ on your device.
- Calibrate if readings seem unstable or inaccurate. Tap Calibrate if the option appears, then move the phone through the patterns shown on screen. Samsung’s Hong Kong guidance describes moving the device in an 8-shape; the sequence can vary by model and market, as noted in its Edge Quick Tools compass instructions.
Samsung’s US support page advises recalibrating after restarting the phone to ensure accurate readings. Treat calibration as a corrective step when readings are off, rather than assuming the phone’s direction is reliable without checking it.

Why a phone compass can point the wrong way
Calibration and the phone’s surroundings can affect the reading. Magnetic fields can interfere with the compass, so Samsung advises calibrating away from magnetic influence and using it where that interference is lower. If the direction looks wrong, move away from likely magnetic sources, recalibrate, and check the reading again.
GPS and compass functions are not interchangeable. Samsung’s guidance addresses compass calibration separately from GPS troubleshooting; a location fix by itself does not establish a dependable compass direction.

What to try if the Compass panel is missing or still inaccurate
- Confirm that your exact model and market support the Compass Quick tool; Samsung’s phone-wide support guidance does not establish availability on every Galaxy device.
- Check that Use location data is enabled, then reopen the Edge panel and look for Compass.
- Calibrate in a place with less magnetic interference, following the prompts shown on your phone.
- Restart the device and check for phone and app updates, as Samsung recommends in its US troubleshooting instructions.
- If the feature or menu still differs, use Samsung support instructions for your model and purchase market. Samsung’s Hong Kong page explicitly warns that models, steps, and settings vary by location and market.
Phone compass or handheld compass?
The phone’s built-in tool is convenient because it is integrated into a device you may already carry. A separate handheld compass is optional and provides a distinct navigation instrument; it is not required for Samsung’s phone feature and will not repair an inaccurate phone sensor. Whichever you use, readings depend on conditions and appropriate use. Samsung does not recommend a particular handheld compass.
