What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Not automatically. A router does not inevitably lose speed just because it has been in use for years. Slowdowns that seem age-related can come from more connected devices, busier nearby Wi-Fi networks, changed placement, outdated firmware, or a router that no longer matches the household’s internet plan and needs. Check the network path before replacing equipment.
What can change as a router gets older?
Physical age and changing demands are different things. A router that once handled a smaller internet plan and fewer devices may become a bottleneck as service speeds and household usage grow, even if it has not physically slowed down. Older router hardware or Wi-Fi standards may also be unable to deliver newer connection speeds or support as many simultaneous devices as newer equipment.

Conditions around the router can change, too. More neighboring Wi-Fi activity, additional household devices, new obstructions, or a router moved farther from the rooms where people use Wi-Fi can affect performance. Linksys also advises that enclosed placement can restrict airflow and weaken Wi-Fi, and that trapped heat may affect performance and lifespan. That is a reason to check ventilation, not evidence that all routers lose speed at a predictable rate.

The reviewed guidance does not establish that routers universally degrade at a fixed rate or should be replaced on a standard timetable. A slowdown alone does not prove the router is failing.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Is the problem your internet connection or your Wi-Fi?
“Slow internet” can originate at several points: the provider’s service, modem, router, Ethernet cable or link, Wi-Fi environment, or the device you are using. Start by comparing symptoms rather than assuming the router is responsible.
- Only one device is slow: Check that device first; a problem limited to one client does not by itself point to a router fault.
- Wi-Fi is slow, but a wired connection works well: Look at wireless coverage, distance, obstacles, interference, and the router or client’s Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Wired and wireless connections are both slow: The issue may be in the incoming service, modem, router, or cabling, rather than Wi-Fi radio conditions alone.
- Performance is worse in one room: A location-dependent result suggests coverage, distance, building materials, obstructions, or interference.
- Slowdowns happen at busy times: Compare results when fewer devices or high-bandwidth activities are using the connection. Concurrent network use and provider speed can both affect performance.
How to diagnose a slow router before replacing it
- Restart the router. If the problem appears temporary, power the router off, wait briefly, then turn it back on. The FCC says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.”
- Compare more than one device. Test a second phone or computer in the same location. If only one device struggles, investigate that client rather than treating the router as the confirmed cause.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if practical. Use a wired connection to the router where possible. If Ethernet is also slow, do not focus only on wireless channels or coverage.
- Test near the router and in the problem room. A strong result near the router but a poor one farther away points toward coverage or local radio conditions. Building layout and materials affect how Wi-Fi travels.
- Check the service path. If your setup allows it safely, connect a computer directly to the modem and compare its performance with the same computer connected through the router. TP-Link recommends this test to help distinguish router issues from problems involving the provider, modem, or service path. If the direct-modem result is still slow, ask your ISP to confirm your plan speed, outages, and line conditions.
- Check firmware and settings. Look for router firmware updates and enable automatic updates if the model supports them. Apple notes that updates can include stability, performance, and security improvements. Also review any custom settings that could affect speed; update availability and steps depend on the router model.
- Consider nearby Wi-Fi congestion. Check whether neighboring networks or channel conditions could be contributing. Google’s guidance suggests trying a manual channel if automatic channel switching is not resolving the issue, then testing performance. Results vary by equipment and local environment.
- Check airflow and placement. When possible, place the router in an open, central location rather than inside an enclosure that traps heat or behind obstacles. Keep it away from sources of heat and test whether a better location improves the affected rooms.
When does replacing a router make sense?
Consider an upgrade when tests show that your router cannot provide the speeds in your subscribed plan, lacks available updates, or no longer meets your household’s coverage or device needs. The FCC advises checking the router model against the speed you subscribe to; if updates are unavailable, a new router or upgraded ISP-provided equipment may be needed.

- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Before choosing a replacement, check the whole connection:
- Whether the router supports your broadband speed and modem or connection type.
- Whether both the router and the devices you use support the Wi-Fi standard and bands you want. A newer router’s standard will not benefit a client that does not support it.
- Whether its coverage suits your home layout and the rooms where you need a reliable signal.
- Whether it can handle your household’s devices and simultaneous use.
- Whether firmware and security updates remain available for the model.
- Whether your ISP offers suitable upgraded equipment, and what its terms are.
There is no supported universal “replace every X years” rule here. Base the decision on demonstrated limits, update support, and your actual plan and coverage needs—not age alone.
