Usually, a printed QR code keeps working after you stop paying only if it encodes its destination directly. A static QR code does that; a dynamic QR code typically points to a provider-managed redirect, which may stop working if the service or plan ends. The headline’s $450-per-year allegation is not verified by the available evidence, so the useful question is what the code depends on—and what the provider’s terms say.
What the $450-a-year allegation does—and does not—establish
A DEV Community search result attributes claims about enterprise pricing, gated SVG exports, scan quotas, trial-period redirect dependency, and a 37-format suite to the author of the exact-title article. The article itself could not be fetched, and no named vendor plan was identified to support its $450-per-year figure. Those claims should therefore be treated as allegations, not as verified facts about QR-generator providers generally.

One current pricing example illustrates why provider-specific terms matter: QRCode.io’s public pricing page, accessed in 2026, displays annual prices of $29.99, $69.99, and $199.99 for tiers with increasing dynamic-code features. Static and dynamic QR codes work differently
Static and dynamic describe how the destination is carried and managed, not two different printed symbologies.

A dynamic code’s flexibility comes with a dependency: someone must keep the redirect service available. The QRCode.io pricing page describes dynamic-code features, but it does not establish how any particular competitor handles cancellation, trial expiry, or suspended accounts.
How to choose a code before printing
Start with what you will need after the code is on a label, poster, package, or other printed material. If the destination is settled and you do not need scan analytics, a static code avoids dependence on a generator’s redirect. If you need to change the destination later or measure scans, a dynamic service may suit you—but confirm the ongoing terms before committing a print run.

- Destination changes: Is post-print editing included, and does it require an active subscription?
- Cancellation and expiry: What happens to redirects when a paid plan ends, a trial expires, or an account is suspended?
- Scan limits and analytics: Are scans capped, and which analytics stop when a plan changes?
- Exports and print requirements: Which file formats are included, and can you export what your printer requires?
- Price and billing: What is the recurring price, billing period, and renewal arrangement for the specific tier?
- Data handling: What information does the service receive when someone scans a code?
Get the answers in the provider’s current terms or in writing before printing. The evidence available here does not support a vendor-by-vendor assessment of these policies.
What the QR standard covers
QR Code symbology is defined by ISO/IEC 18004. The standard covers characteristics including data encoding, symbol formats, dimensions, error correction, decoding, production quality, and application parameters. That standard concerns the QR symbol; it does not determine whether a commercial provider will keep a redirect active after a subscription ends. That question belongs to the service’s terms.

Those claims do not by themselves establish that every tool works entirely offline, that browser-local data is never transmitted, or that a generated code will remain useful if its destination disappears. For any generator, distinguish the code’s encoded content from the provider’s claims about privacy, exports, or service availability.
