A 2026 test found that cooling lowered temperatures on both phones it studied, while frame-rate gains varied from almost zero to substantial depending on the phone and graphics setting. Coolers cannot be expected to fix network latency, weak hardware, or unrelated software problems.
When a cooler can help with gaming lag
Phones may reduce performance to manage heat. A 2021 smartphone thermal-management paper describes this as “thermal-throttling, where performance is reduced in order to allow the device to cool down.” During a demanding, sustained game, that can contribute to frame-rate drops. Cooling is relevant when heat is actually limiting the phone; it does not address every cause of stuttering or lag.

The same paper reports a finding from prior PhoneLab research: throttling occurred on more than 80% of device-days in a 150-device smartphone testbed. That figure describes device-days in the cited study, not gaming sessions or the likelihood that a particular phone will throttle. The paper’s workload-specific time-to-throttle observations should not be treated as a general rule for gaming.
What testing says about temperature and FPS
A June 2026 JASIEK study by I Made Yudi Dharmawan, Made Sutha Yadnya, and Djul Fikry Budiman tested two mid-range phones playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. It compared Standard and HD graphics in 10-, 15-, and 20-minute runs, with and without a cooler. Each treatment combination was repeated 30 times. The table shows the study’s reported average temperature drop and FPS increase when using a cooler:

The results show why a temperature drop alone cannot predict a gaming benefit: FPS gains ranged from effectively negligible to substantial across the tested combinations. The largest increase was specific to the Xiaomi phone at HD settings in this one game; it should not be assumed for other phones, games, or coolers. The study page says data downloads are not yet available, so readers cannot inspect the underlying dataset there.
Manufacturer tests: cooler temperatures do not always mean higher FPS
ASUS says its AeroActive Cooler 6 lowered surface temperature near the CPU by up to 25°C in ASUS lab comparisons against a ROG Phone 6 without the cooler. This is a manufacturer-reported surface-temperature result, not a guaranteed FPS gain.

In separate examples published by ASUS ROG for a ROG Phone 9 with AeroActive Cooler X Pro, the reported average FPS stayed the same while temperatures fell:

These are ASUS’s own tests, not independent findings. Taken together, the examples illustrate a practical distinction: a cooler may reduce heat without improving average FPS when the phone was not being meaningfully limited by temperature.

What a phone cooler can and cannot address
- Potentially helps: heat-related performance drops during sustained gaming, if cooling gives the phone more thermal headroom.
- Does not fix: network latency, a weak or unsuitable processor, or software issues unrelated to heat.
- Does not guarantee: a visible FPS increase. The tested results vary by device and graphics setting, and the ASUS examples show lower temperatures with unchanged average FPS.
How to choose a cooler for your phone
Compatibility matters as much as the cooler’s advertised temperature drop. For example, ASUS’s AeroActive Cooler 6 is designed for the ROG Phone 6 series; it should not be assumed to fit a generic Android phone or an iPhone. ASUS describes fan-only cooling, thermoelectric cooling powered by the phone, and a stronger thermoelectric mode using external power. The accessory also has gaming buttons.
- Check the exact phone model and case fit. Confirm compatibility and whether you must remove your case.
- Consider where it attaches. The cooler should contact an area that corresponds to the phone’s internal hot spot.
- Check power needs. Fan-only, phone-powered thermoelectric, and externally powered modes can affect cable use and convenience.
- Consider comfort and grip. A cooler’s shape and added bulk should suit how you hold and play.
- Look for sustained FPS evidence. Results for your phone and game are more informative than a maximum temperature-drop claim alone.
ASUS warns that excessive cooling could cause condensation and says the AeroActive Cooler 6 includes humidity-sensor protection. That warning is specific to the manufacturer’s accessory guidance; follow the instructions for whichever model you use. No standardized cross-brand benchmark is established by the cited sources, so they do not support ranking the full phone-cooler market.
