Usually, no. A Wi-Fi 7 router is an optional upgrade, not a requirement for online gaming. It may help when wireless congestion or interference is causing problems, but the gaming device must also support the relevant Wi-Fi 7 features. If your current connection is stable—or your console or PC cannot use Wi-Fi 7—buying a new router is unlikely to be necessary just for gaming.
When a Wi-Fi 7 router might help gaming
Wi-Fi 7 is most relevant when the problem is inside your home wireless network: competing devices, radio interference, or inconsistent wireless performance. The Wireless Broadband Alliance’s 2026 residential trial reported a 35–48% reduction in application-layer latency and up to a 40% reduction in MAC-layer jitter. Those figures describe that trial, not a guaranteed improvement for an individual gamer.

The trial used a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access point and an Intel BE200 client using enhanced Multi-Link Single Radio (eMLSR) in a 4,500-square-foot single-family home. It also reported up to doubled aggregated throughput under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference when using MLO rather than legacy single-link operation. These are conditional findings from a defined test environment, not a promise of lower game ping in every home. The Wireless Broadband Alliance’s February 2026 announcement describes the trial and its conditions.
If the delay comes from your internet connection, the route to the game server, or the server itself, a new Wi-Fi router may not address the cause. The WBA results concern in-home wireless performance under test conditions; they do not establish that Wi-Fi 7 will reduce end-to-end game latency in every situation.

What MLO does—and why both devices matter
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets compatible Wi-Fi 7 devices use multiple wireless links, across supported bands, to improve throughput, latency, and reliability. In practical terms, it can give a connection more than one radio path to work with instead of relying on a single link. The benefit depends on what the router and client support and how each implements MLO. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 announcement describes MLO as a feature intended to increase throughput, reduce latency, and improve reliability.
A Wi-Fi 7 router cannot add Wi-Fi 7 hardware to an older console or PC. The client’s wireless solution, device manufacturer’s enablement, operating-system support, and access point all affect whether the features are available. Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 for Gaming guidance outlines those compatibility dependencies. Availability of the 6 GHz band also varies by region.

Why the Wi-Fi 7 label is not enough
Do not assume that every Wi-Fi 7 router offers the same MLO behavior. RTINGS reports that, among 25 routers in its tested sample, 22 reportedly used the most minimal form of MLO. Its review also cautions that certification alone does not guarantee a complete MLO implementation or a particular real-world result. That sample is not a census of every router on the market. Check the documentation for the specific router and gaming device rather than relying on the Wi-Fi 7 label alone. RTINGS’ MLO review discusses the tested implementations.
Decide whether an upgrade fits your setup
- Check the source of the problem. If wireless congestion or interference is disrupting play, Wi-Fi 7’s potential is more relevant. If the connection is stable, or the issue is elsewhere on the broadband or game-server path, the router may not solve it.
- Check client compatibility. Confirm that your gaming PC or console supports Wi-Fi 7 and that its manufacturer and operating system enable the needed features. Without a compatible client, the router’s Wi-Fi 7 features cannot provide their intended client-side benefit.
- Verify MLO support on both ends. Look up the supported MLO modes and bands in the router and client documentation. Implementations vary, so the standard name by itself is not enough to predict performance.
- Consider whether 6 GHz is usable in your home. Regional availability differs, and the device must support the band. The WBA trial describes balancing 6 GHz capacity with 5 GHz coverage; whether that trade-off helps depends on the home and wireless conditions.
- Factor in household load. A busy wireless network or persistent interference makes the possible benefits more pertinent than a lightly used network that already works reliably.
Should you buy now or wait?
If your current Wi-Fi is stable and your gaming device is not Wi-Fi 7 capable, there is no clear gaming-specific reason to rush into a Wi-Fi 7 router. If you have diagnosed wireless congestion or interference and both the router and client support useful Wi-Fi 7 features, MLO may make an upgrade worth considering. Treat reported trial improvements as evidence of potential under particular conditions—not as a prediction for your own game, home, or internet connection.
