Do Not Disturb reduces interruptions, but it is not necessarily a “block everything” switch. You can usually choose which people, apps, alarms, or other alerts are allowed through, and schedules or modes such as Sleep and Driving can change notification behavior automatically.
What Do Not Disturb does
Do Not Disturb is a notification-management mode: it limits sounds and interruptions according to the exceptions you choose. The exact controls differ by phone. On iPhone, it is one of Apple’s Focus options; on Android, Google groups it with Modes. Depending on your settings, selected contacts, apps, alarms, or other interruptions may still get through. Android also notes that critical system notifications, such as security notifications, can still appear.

Turn it on quickly
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Focus, then choose Do Not Disturb.
- If prompted, choose when it should end, such as after a set duration or when you leave a location.
If another Focus is active, selecting Do Not Disturb replaces it. You can also open Settings > Focus and turn on the Focus you want.

Choose who and what can interrupt
- Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- Choose the people and apps that are allowed to notify you.
- Adjust display options if you want to change how notifications appear while the Focus is active.
Schedule Do Not Disturb
In Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb, add a schedule based on a time, location, or app. Sleep Focus follows the sleep schedule set in Health. If Share Across Devices is enabled, Focus settings can apply across your Apple devices.
How to turn on Do Not Disturb on Android
Turn it on and choose exceptions
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, or use the Do Not Disturb control in Quick Settings.
- Under Notification filters, choose which people can reach you through calls, messages, or conversations.
- Choose which apps can send notifications and whether alarms or other interruptions are allowed.
- If available on your device, enable the repeat-caller rule to allow a call when the same person calls twice within 15 minutes.
These are Google’s documented paths and categories; menu names and availability can differ by manufacturer and Android version. Google identifies some instructions as applying to Android 14 and later. See Google’s Android guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb for device-specific qualifications.

Use Bedtime, Driving, or a custom mode
Android’s Modes can include Bedtime, Driving, and custom modes. Bedtime can follow a schedule you set or an existing schedule, and may be configured to start while the phone is charging. Driving can be set to activate while driving. The available options and setup steps depend on the phone and software version.

An automatic schedule or a different mode may be changing notification behavior, even if you did not tap Do Not Disturb at that moment.

- On iPhone: Check Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > Set a Schedule. Also check whether another Focus, such as Sleep or Driving, is active.
- On Android: Review Do Not Disturb and other Modes, including Bedtime or Driving, and inspect any schedules or automatic activation rules. The exact menu labels vary by device.
If notifications remain silent after you switch off Do Not Disturb, check whether a different Focus or Mode is still active and review its own exceptions and schedule.
Using Do Not Disturb while driving
Set up Driving Focus or a driving mode before you start driving. Apple cautions: “The Driving Focus is not a substitute for following all the rules that prohibit distracted driving.” Follow local distracted-driving laws and do not adjust phone settings while driving. Apple’s Driving Focus guidance explains the feature’s limitation.

What to expect from the settings
Do Not Disturb filters notifications; it does not guarantee that every alert will be hidden or silenced. Which interruptions remain depends on the platform, chosen filters, active mode, and device settings. Apple describes Focus as a way to filter notifications during activities such as sleeping, working, reading, or driving; its notification guidance explains that role.
