Do Museum Visitors Leave Chemicals on Artwork? What a Gallery Study Found

Visitors release compounds into gallery air, and a CU Art Museum study inferred that much of its lactic acid settled on indoor surfaces. That does not mean researchers measured every artwork or found damage.

Yes—visitor-derived compounds can move from gallery air onto indoor surfaces. In a six-week study at the University of Colorado Art Museum, lactic acid disappeared from gallery air faster than ventilation alone could explain, which researchers interpreted as surface uptake. The study did not directly test every artwork, so its result is evidence of deposition in the gallery, not proof that a measured amount landed on each object.

How researchers detected visitor-related compounds

Researchers continuously sampled air in the museum’s main gallery and at an air-supply vent for six weeks. Comparing the two locations helped distinguish changes that could be explained by ventilation from compounds that left the gallery air more quickly. The study also used a box model to estimate emissions, ventilation, chemical reactions and deposition to surfaces. [Primary study]

Visitors contribute chemicals through breathing and skin-related emissions, including lactic acid, as well as personal-care products such as deodorants. The gallery also contained emissions associated with cleaning and painting products. Carbon dioxide and acetone generally tracked crowd-related changes and ventilation; lactic acid declined faster than ventilation could account for, consistent with deposition on indoor surfaces. What the 97 percent figure means

CIRES summarized the modeled finding this way: “97 percent of the lactic acid emitted in the museum ended up on a surface.” That figure describes the study’s estimate for the museum, not a direct measurement of lactic acid on artwork. The researchers inferred uptake from air measurements and modeling; they did not chemically sample every object. Lead author Demetrios Pagonis said the observed surface uptake was greater than previous studies had suggested. CIRES

“On a surface” is broader than “on a painting.” The study supports the conclusion that some visitor-derived compounds can leave the air and partition onto gallery surfaces; it does not identify which specific objects received them or how much any individual work accumulated.

Does deposition mean the art was damaged?

No. Deposition describes where a compound goes; it does not by itself demonstrate damage. Whether a substance affects an artwork depends on its concentration and exposure duration, the object’s materials and prior treatments, surface chemistry, humidity, enclosure and local airflow. Museum indoor air also reflects many sources, including outdoor air, construction and furnishings, objects, staff, visitors and personal-care products. The Met-hosted museum indoor-air workshop report notes that evidence is incomplete for many suspected pollutants and that systematic material-damage studies cover only a limited set of compounds. CIRES reported that the art-harming pollutants measured in the CU Art Museum study were at safe levels under the conditions measured there. That is a finding about the pollutants and gallery in that study, not a guarantee about every museum, pollutant or artwork. CIRES

Why results differ between museums

Air concentration, surface deposition and demonstrated material damage are different measurements. Comparisons between institutions also need to account for ventilation, surfaces, object materials and exposure time. For example, a 2022 study at the Refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses Leonardo’s The Last Supper, examined visitor-related variation in carbon dioxide and ammonia using stable carbon isotope ratios as real-time monitoring indicators. It used a different method and does not establish the CU museum’s lactic-acid deposition rate elsewhere. 2022 study
