Massage guns may briefly improve flexibility, range of motion, and some recovery-related measures, but research does not show that they reliably boost athletic performance or treat injuries. The evidence is limited, and results depend on the outcome being measured.
What studies say massage guns can do
A handheld percussive massage gun delivers repeated pressure to soft tissue. Two 2023 systematic reviews examined whether this kind of percussion therapy affects physical performance, recovery, and pain. Their findings suggest possible short-term effects—not proof of lasting benefit or a broad medical treatment.

Possible short-term mobility and recovery effects
Ferreira and colleagues screened 281 records and included 11 studies in their 2023 review. Ten studies were judged to have moderate risk of bias and one high risk. The review found possible short-term improvements in some flexibility and range-of-motion measures, along with selected recovery-related outcomes. It did not find consistent gains in strength, balance, acceleration, agility, or explosive performance. Read the review.
Why that is not definitive proof
A separate 2023 review by Sams and colleagues included 13 studies and found limitations in methodological quality or reporting across all of them. Its narrative synthesis described possible acute effects and changes in pain, but not definitive evidence of broad therapeutic benefit. Read the review abstract.

Together, these reviews support cautious expectations: a massage gun may produce a short-lived change in how flexible or mobile you feel, but the evidence does not establish a dependable effect for every person, task, or recovery goal.
What massage guns are not proven to do
The reviews do not establish massage guns as a way to cure an injury, prevent soreness, or reliably improve athletic performance. In particular, the Ferreira review did not support use to improve strength, balance, acceleration, agility, or explosive activities. A device’s features or marketing claims are not evidence that it produces better clinical results.

Safety: where not to use one and when to ask first
Percussion can be inappropriate over vulnerable or injured areas, and prolonged, aggressive use is a concern. The Ferreira review’s cautions include recent skin injury, wounds, bruises or infection; recent fracture and some chronic bone conditions; deep-vein thrombosis or clotting disorders; reduced sensation; and sensitive body areas. Some health conditions or implanted devices may also call for avoiding or limiting use. These are review authors’ cautions, not a substitute for individual medical advice. See the review’s discussion of safety.

The NIH’s general massage guidance says people with medical conditions or who are pregnant may need to modify or avoid some practices. It also notes rare reports of serious effects from massage, including blood clots, nerve injury, or bone fracture. That guidance covers massage therapy generally; it is not an estimate of how often massage guns cause harm. NIH: Massage Therapy.
- Do not use percussion over a wound, fresh bruise, recent fracture, or area of infection.
- Do not use a gun over a sensitive area or where sensation is reduced; you may not be able to judge pressure safely.
- If you have a clotting risk, bone condition, implanted device, significant health condition, or are pregnant, ask a clinician whether and how to use one.
- Stop if use causes pain or an unusual reaction. Persistent symptoms or a suspected injury warrant assessment by a qualified health professional rather than escalating pressure or duration.
How to think about buying one
The studies concern handheld percussive massage devices as a category; they do not establish that one brand or model works better than another. If you are comparing devices, treat practical factors such as weight, grip, noise, battery life, attachments, warranty, and return terms as purchasing considerations—not evidence of superior treatment or performance.
