The “lizard brain” is shorthand for Paul D. MacLean’s influential triune-brain theory, but modern comparative neuroscience rejects its picture of a reptilian core overlaid by separate emotional and rational layers. Brain evolution is branching, and behavior depends on interacting systems rather than three isolated tiers fighting for control.
Where did the “lizard brain” idea come from?
In the 1960s, neuroscientist Paul D. MacLean developed the triune-brain model. It divided the brain into a “reptilian complex” associated with basic drives, a limbic or “paleomammalian” system associated with emotion, and a neocortex associated with reasoning. Carl Sagan helped popularize the idea in The Dragons of Eden in 1977.

The model offered an easy-to-remember way to connect brain structures with behavior. But that simplicity came with a misleading evolutionary story: that mammals and humans acquired newer brain layers while retaining an essentially reptilian brain underneath. The National Academies’ 2014 chapter on consciousness describes the triune view as largely erroneous in light of newer findings: the neocortex did not simply arrive as a new tier atop an unchanged reptilian core.
What does brain evolution look like instead?
Evolution is a branching process, not a ladder running from reptiles to mammals to humans. Vertebrates share broad features of brain organization, while particular regions and circuits have changed, expanded, and specialized differently across lineages and ecological settings. A 2026 review, “Dual computational systems in the development and evolution of mammalian brains,” likewise rejects the idea that each later animal group simply added a new brain tier to an old one.

This does not mean that brain anatomy is irrelevant, or that no structures are conserved across species. It means that shared ancestry and anatomical similarities do not support the claim that an unchanged reptilian brain survives inside every human. Nor should the brainstem itself be labeled a “reptilian brain”: that confuses a real anatomical region with an outdated evolutionary interpretation.
Are emotion and reason separate systems battling for control?
Not in the simple way the popular story suggests. The triune model encourages the image of instinct in one isolated tier, emotion in another, and rational thought in a third. Contemporary accounts instead emphasize interacting systems and functions that can involve multiple regions. Emotion is not confined to one “limbic” box, and rationality does not belong exclusively to the neocortex.

In a Science Norway report published on 23 May 2023, University of Oslo psychology professor Christian Krog Tamnes put the anatomical point plainly: “There’s no reptilian brain inside our human brain.” He also said, “The idea that the old structures have been preserved unchanged through evolution is wrong.” Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, quoted in the same report from a 2020 University of Waikato lecture, described the broader misconception this way: “The brain is not a battlefield between reason and emotion.” These are attributed remarks reported by Science Norway, not quotations from a peer-reviewed paper.

It should not. Modern reptiles are living animals with their own evolutionary histories, not primitive stages on a path toward mammals. A scholarly synthesis in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy discusses evidence relevant to varied reptile capacities, including associative learning, emotional responses, social affiliation, parental care in some species, navigation, and behavior considered relevant to play.

Those findings do not make reptile minds identical to human minds. They do make “reptilian” a poor synonym for mindless, reflexive, or incapable of learning. If the phrase “lizard brain” is used at all, it is safest to treat it as a loose metaphor—not an anatomical explanation for why someone acted on impulse.

Why does the metaphor still sound convincing?
It gives a tidy explanation for experiences that feel like competing impulses: a quick reaction, a strong emotion, or a decision made before careful reflection. But a memorable story is not necessarily a good biological map. Saying that an “ancient reptilian brain took over” turns a complex behavior into a claim about a single primitive module that the evidence does not establish.

A more accurate everyday description is that behavior reflects interacting brain systems, bodily state, learning, and context. The phrase may work as figurative shorthand if everyone understands it that way; it should not be presented as the literal reason a person feels or acts as they do.
