Yes, in a limited technical sense: a higher polling rate lets a mouse send position and button updates more often, which can make movement data more current. But it does not guarantee better aim, more wins, or a noticeable improvement for every player. Whether it is worthwhile depends on your PC, game, display, mouse and tolerance for shorter wireless battery life.
What a mouse polling rate measures
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports data to the computer, measured in hertz (Hz). A 1,000Hz setting nominally sends a report every 1 millisecond; 4,000Hz corresponds to 0.25ms, and 8,000Hz to 0.125ms. These are intervals between reports, not the mouse’s total input latency.
Other stages—including the sensor, switches, firmware, connection, operating system, game, frame rendering and display—also contribute to how quickly an action appears on screen. Razer explains its 8,000Hz HyperPolling technology as sending up to eight times as many reports per second as 1,000Hz: Razer HyperPolling technology.
What higher polling can—and cannot—change
More frequent reports can give a game or cursor newer mouse-position information between display frames. Razer says that can make cursor movement smoother with a high-refresh-rate monitor, and its 2021 announcement describes reducing the delay between the latest mouse report and a monitor frame. Those are explanations and claims from the manufacturer, not proof that players generally aim better or win more: Razer’s 2021 HyperPolling announcement.

One product-specific example comes from TechRadar’s hands-on review of the SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2. The reviewer reported smoother cursor movement while using its 4,000Hz mode in Apex Legends, and measured 3,106Hz with the mouse configured for 4,000Hz at 3,250 DPI. That is one reviewer’s observation and measurement—not a general test of player performance: TechRadar’s Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 review.
The available evidence does not establish that a higher polling rate by itself improves aim accuracy, reaction time or win rate for all players. Treat it as a technical setting that may change the feel of input, rather than a performance upgrade with guaranteed results.

Polling rates compared
| Setting | Nominal interval between reports | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000Hz | 1ms | One report every millisecond, nominally. |
| 4,000Hz | 0.25ms | Four times the reports per second of 1,000Hz, nominally. |
| 8,000Hz | 0.125ms | Eight times the reports per second of 1,000Hz, nominally. |
These intervals describe reporting frequency only. They should not be read as total end-to-end input latency or as a measure of how much faster a player will respond.
Tradeoffs to consider before turning it up
CPU load and compatibility
Higher polling rates can use more CPU capacity. Corsair’s guidance recommends at least an Intel Core i5 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 2nd generation (or equivalent) for 4,000Hz, and an Intel Core i7 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 7 2nd generation (or equivalent) for 8,000Hz. These are Corsair recommendations, not universal minimum requirements for every mouse or PC. Corsair also advises connecting directly to a USB port linked to the motherboard chipset; hubs, docks and third-party chipsets may be less stable. See Corsair’s higher-polling-rate guidance.

Some systems or games may stutter or have compatibility problems at high rates. If that happens, lower the polling rate and see whether performance becomes smooth again.
Wireless battery life
High polling can reduce battery life, so compare figures at the same connection and polling rate. TechRadar reports that SteelSeries rates the Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 for up to 200 hours over Bluetooth and 120 hours over 2.4GHz with polling set to 1,000Hz and RGB off. The reviewer estimated around 30 hours at 4,000Hz; that high-rate figure is an estimate, not a SteelSeries rating.

How to decide whether to use a higher rate
- Check that your mouse supports it. Polling-rate options vary by model. Some require a setting in the manufacturer’s software: TechRadar reports that 4,000Hz is not enabled by default on the Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 and must be switched on in SteelSeries GG.
- Start with a rate your system handles smoothly. Try the higher setting in the game you actually play, rather than assuming the maximum is best.
- Watch for problems while moving the mouse. If you notice stutter or compatibility trouble, step down to a lower rate.
- Judge the feel for yourself. Keep the higher setting if you prefer it and your system remains stable; otherwise, use the rate that works well for you.
- For a wireless mouse, weigh the battery cost. Check whether advertised battery figures apply to your chosen connection, polling rate and lighting settings.
Should polling rate decide which mouse you buy?
Not by itself. A gaming mouse with adjustable polling rate gives you the option to experiment, but shape, weight, sensor, buttons, connection, reliability and price still matter to everyday use. Models such as the Razer Viper 8K Hz and SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 illustrate 8,000Hz and configurable 4,000Hz options, respectively; they are examples, not universal recommendations. Check the exact model and configuration, then compare the whole mouse rather than choosing on its maximum polling number alone.
