Do Gundam Model Kits Need Glue or Paint? A Beginner FAQ

Many Gundam kits can be built without glue or paint, but requirements vary by release. Use the exact manual to check snap-fit joints, molded colors, tool needs, decals, and safety guidance.

Usually, no. Many modern Gundam kits use snap-fit parts and multicolor plastic, so you can assemble and display them without glue or paint. The exact requirement depends on the individual kit, so its manual—not the grade name alone—is the final authority.

The short answer for a first-time builder

Bandai’s Gunpla system is designed so many kits can be built by fitting molded parts together rather than gluing them. Color is often built into the runners through multicolor molding, which means a finished model can look complete straight from the box. Optional panel lining, decals, and painting are finishing choices, not automatic assembly requirements.

There is an important qualification: Bandai says its technologies differ by Gunpla type. A beginner-oriented ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam manual labels its system “No glue required,” “No paint required,” and “No tools required.” Those labels describe that specific kit. They are not a guarantee that every High Grade, Master Grade, or other Gunpla release has identical instructions.

What glue, paint, and tools each do

Glue

Snap-fit construction uses shaped pegs, sockets, tabs, and other joints that hold parts together when they are pressed into place. Bandai’s general Gunpla guide describes parts being assembled without adhesives by snapping them together. If your manual shows only a push-fit assembly step, glue is not part of the standard build.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Some manuals still include adhesive guidance. The Master Grade RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 manual discusses adhesives and includes a glue-application symbol. That tells you to follow the instructions for that model rather than assuming that a snap-fit approach applies everywhere. Do not add glue simply because a joint feels tight or because another builder used it; an adhesive can make later disassembly or pose changes harder.

Paint

Many parts arrive in several plastic colors. Bandai calls this approach iropla, or multicolor molding, and the ENTRY GRADE RX-78-2 manual labels the kit “No paint required.” You can therefore complete an unpainted build with the molded colors intact.

Paint remains useful for customization. Builders may recolor armor, shade recesses, correct small color differences, or create an entirely different scheme. Those are optional goals. A model that is assembled in its original plastic colors is still a complete build.

Tools

“No tools required” is another kit-specific feature. The ENTRY GRADE example uses a touch-gate design intended to let parts be removed without conventional cutters. Other kits can specify nippers or side cutters. Bandai’s general guide suggests diagonal pliers as a useful tool, and its Master Grade manual instructs the builder to use nippers.

What the official examples show

Feature ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0
Part connection Manual labels the snap-fit system “No glue required.” Manual includes tool, paint, adhesive, and safety instructions; follow its individual symbols and steps.
Color out of the box Manual labels the multicolor molding “No paint required.” Paint is discussed as part of the manual’s guidance; the cited material does not establish that painting is required to finish the model.
Part removal Touch-gate feature is labeled “No tools required.” Manual instructs builders to use nippers; tools are not included.
Finishing Optional detail work can be added after assembly. Manual includes guidance relating to paint, adhesive, and safe tool use.
Age or safety note The cited manual indicates ages 8 and up. Manual provides safety cautions and recommends water-based paint for safety reasons.

This comparison is deliberately limited to the two cited manuals. It demonstrates why the instructions for the exact box in front of you matter more than a broad assumption about all kits.

How to decide what your kit needs before you start

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the grade, scale, mobile suit name, and version printed on the box. Similar names can refer to different engineering and different manuals.
  2. Read the manual’s notices first. Look for icons or text mentioning snap-fit assembly, adhesive, paint, nippers, touch-gate removal, decals, and age guidance.
  3. Check the parts list. Confirm that the runners and small accessories shown in the contents are present before cutting anything. If a part is missing, stop and resolve that issue rather than improvising with glue.
  4. Read the numbered steps in order. Verify each part number and its orientation before pressing pieces together. A reversed part can be difficult to remove once surrounding armor is attached.
  5. Separate requirements from options. A glue symbol or a tool warning is an instruction for that step. A panel-line marker or decal diagram is usually a finishing option unless the manual explicitly makes it necessary for a later fit.
  6. Gather only what the manual calls for. For a touch-gate kit, you may begin with no cutters. For a kit that specifies nippers, obtain suitable plastic-model side cutters before starting. Add tweezers, markers, paint, or adhesive only when your planned finish or the instructions justify them.

A beginner workflow for a clean, unpainted build

1. Prepare a controlled workspace

Use a clear, well-lit surface where tiny parts cannot roll away. Keep the manual open to the current page and arrange runners so their letter or number markings remain visible. This reduces the chance of confusing similar pieces and lets you return a part to the runner if you pause.

2. Remove parts according to the kit’s method

Touch-gate parts may be designed for careful separation by hand. If the manual specifies nippers, cut the connecting gates rather than twisting a part until the plastic stresses. Do not generalize the ENTRY GRADE tool-free label to a model whose manual calls for cutters.

3. Test orientation before committing

Many pieces look symmetrical until you compare the tabs, holes, surface detail, or left/right markings. Hold the parts together lightly, match the manual illustration, and then press them until the joint seats. If resistance is unusual, separate the pieces and check for a reversed orientation or leftover gate.

4. Build in the numbered sequence

Follow the manual’s order instead of assembling every visible limb first. Internal frames, armor shells, and moving joints can depend on a particular sequence. Keeping subassemblies grouped by the step number also makes it easier to diagnose a misplaced part.

5. Inspect the finished joints

Check that armor panels are flush, moving joints have their intended range, and no unused part has been trapped inside a shell. At this point, the kit can be displayed in its molded colors. You do not need to apply glue or paint merely because the construction is complete.

Optional finishing after assembly

Panel lines and small details

Bandai’s guide identifies a Gundam Marker or an inking pen as a way to accent panel lines. This adds contrast to recessed details without repainting the whole model. Apply such detail only after the relevant parts are clean and fully seated, and treat it as cosmetic work rather than structural assembly.

Decals

Decals are another finishing stage. Tweezers can help position small pieces, as Bandai’s guide notes. Work slowly, follow the placement diagrams, and leave enough time for each decal to settle before handling the area. A model does not become incomplete simply because you choose not to use every decal sheet.

Full paint work

Painting is appropriate when the molded colors do not match your intended scheme or when you want additional shading and weathering. Plan the paint process around the manual’s safety advice. The cited Master Grade manual recommends water-based paint for safety reasons; that is a safety recommendation from that manual, not a statement that paint is mandatory or that every paint type is interchangeable.

When glue or paint becomes the right choice

Use adhesive only when the instructions or your repair plan call for it

An adhesive step in the manual is the clearest reason to keep model glue available. Adhesive may also be considered for a damaged or loose part, but that is a repair decision rather than a normal requirement for every snap-fit kit. Before bonding anything, confirm that the part is correctly oriented and that the joint is meant to be permanent.

Paint for an intended finish, not to compensate for missing assembly information

If a kit is designed to look complete in molded colors, painting before you understand the fit can make troubleshooting harder. Assemble enough of the model to learn how the parts behave, then decide whether the color, detail, or surface treatment needs improvement. This keeps optional finishing separate from the basic build.

Use the manual’s safety instructions as the boundary

The Master Grade manual says tools are not included and advises proper handling of tools, paints, and adhesives. Follow those warnings, provide suitable ventilation and protection for the products you select, and observe the age guidance printed for your kit. The cited ENTRY GRADE manual indicates ages 8 and up, but another release may specify a different age range.

A comparison checklist for choosing a beginner-friendly kit

When two boxes look appealing, compare the actual instructions rather than treating a grade label as a guarantee. Look for these signals:

Question What to look for in the manual Why it matters
How do parts connect? Snap-fit diagrams or an explicit adhesive step Shows whether glue is part of ordinary assembly.
Are colors molded in? Multicolor or iropla information and color illustrations Indicates how complete the unpainted result should look.
How are parts removed? Touch-gate/tool-free language or nipper instructions Determines whether cutters are optional or needed from the start.
What finishing is shown? Panel-line, marker, and decal steps Separates display options from structural requirements.
What safety information is present? Age label and cautions for tools, paint, and adhesive Helps you prepare a safe workspace and choose suitable supplies.

If a listing does not show enough of the manual to answer these questions, use the manufacturer’s exact instructions for the release before buying supplies. Availability and listing details can change, while the manual is tied to the specific kit.

Common beginner mistakes and practical fixes

  • Buying a full paint and glue setup first. Start with the manual and the kit’s actual requirements. You may need neither for a basic snap-fit build.
  • Assuming every Gundam kit is tool-free. The touch-gate label applies to the cited ENTRY GRADE example; another manual may instruct nippers.
  • Forcing a joint that does not fit. Stop, compare part numbers and orientation, and remove any remaining gate before applying pressure.
  • Gluing a movable joint prematurely. Confirm that the step is adhesive-requiring and that the connection is intended to be permanent.
  • Treating decals as proof that painting is required. Decals and markers are finishing choices unless the manual explicitly makes them part of a necessary step.
  • Ignoring safety notes because the kit is small. Follow the manual’s warnings for tools, paint, adhesive, and age suitability.

Bottom line for a first kit

Choose a kit whose manual clearly matches your comfort level. The documented ENTRY GRADE RX-78-2 example can be assembled without glue, paint, or tools, while the MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 manual shows why other kits may call out nippers, adhesive, paint handling, and additional safety steps. Start by reading the exact manual, build in sequence, and add markers, decals, glue, or paint only for a stated instruction or a finish you deliberately want.
