Do Googlebooks Have a Battery Life Problem? What the Early Tests Show

Tom's Guide's early October 2026 tests recorded 6 hours 18 minutes to 11 hours 52 minutes for five Googlebooks. Here is what that does and does not show about Google's battery claims.

Early tests point to a real battery-life concern, but a narrower one than the headline implies. Tom’s Guide’s October 7, 2026 testing of five 2026 Googlebooks recorded runtimes from 6 hours 18 minutes to 11 hours 52 minutes under a demanding live-web browsing workload. Google’s “up to” figures for the same models are considerably longer, but they come from different, controlled tests. The figures in this article are Tom’s Guide’s measurements, not ours, and they should be read as a warning sign under heavy browsing rather than a verdict on how every Googlebook performs.

What the early Tom’s Guide tests measured

Tom’s Guide ran the same procedure on each laptop. Display brightness was set to 150 nits, Bluetooth and location services were turned off, and a Chrome-extension-driven script loaded 30 live websites every 30 seconds until the battery was empty. The displays ran at their default 120 Hz refresh rate. The publication normally completes three passes per device, but at publication it had finished one for these models.

Model Battery capacity (per Tom’s Guide) Runtime under the live-web browsing test
Acer Googlebook 14 71 Wh 10:25
Asus Googlebook 14 70 Wh 6:18
Dell XPS Googlebook 52 Wh 10:04
HP Googlebook 14 70 Wh 11:52
Lenovo Googlebook 15 70 Wh 10:25

For context, Tom’s Guide ran the same test on three non-Googlebook laptops and reported these runtimes: Dell XPS 13, 14:57; MacBook Air M5, 15:37; Chromebook Plus 14 Gen 10, 13:19. These are Tom’s Guide results under its own stated method, and they are not a Google comparison.

Do Googlebooks really last 14 hours?

Google’s current support page says the 2026 portfolio is rated at up to 14 hours of video playback or up to 16 hours of browsing. Google presents these as upper estimates, not fixed runtimes. The page states, “Actual battery life may be lower,” and says real-world life depends on the model, configuration, software, apps, features, display, and settings. The claims are based on internal testing on pre-release 2026 hardware and software. Google’s September 21, 2026 launch announcement described up to 14 hours of battery life across the initial lineup; the support page is the better source for the model-level figures and test methods below.

Google’s model-specific estimates, set beside the Tom’s Guide runtimes, look like this:

Model Google video claim Google browsing claim Tom’s Guide live-web runtime Arithmetic gap to browsing claim
Acer Googlebook 14 Up to 16 hours Up to 16 hours 10:25 5 h 35 min
Asus Googlebook 14 Up to 15 hours Up to 16 hours 6:18 9 h 42 min
Dell Googlebook (Tom’s Guide calls it the Dell XPS Googlebook) Up to 16 hours Up to 18 hours 10:04 7 h 56 min
HP Googlebook 14 Up to 23 hours Up to 19 hours 11:52 7 h 8 min
Lenovo Googlebook 15 Up to 13 hours Up to 13 hours 10:25 2 h 35 min

The gap column is simple subtraction between two figures produced by different methods. It shows the size of the difference, not how far any model misses its claim.

Google’s two test methods

Google’s video test used locally stored 1080p, 30 fps VP9 video in Chrome, with brightness of at least 100 nits, the dark theme, Wi-Fi connected but idle, and no connected devices.

Google’s browsing test used Chrome at a brightness of at least 100 nits, the dark theme, Battery Saver, active Wi-Fi browsing, and no connected devices.

Why the two sets of numbers don’t line up

The two protocols differ in several ways, so the comparison shows direction rather than precise accuracy:

  • Brightness: Google’s floor is 100 nits. Tom’s Guide used 150 nits.
  • Power saving: Google’s browsing run uses Battery Saver. Tom’s Guide’s description of its setup does not mention Battery Saver.
  • Theme: Google’s runs use the dark theme. Tom’s Guide used the default theme.
  • Workload: Google’s video test plays a local file with no network activity. Tom’s Guide’s test loads live websites on a fixed schedule, which keeps the radios and page rendering busy.
  • Refresh rate: Tom’s Guide ran its displays at 120 Hz, the default. Google’s published methods do not describe refresh-rate settings.

Taken together, these differences suggest that battery life can fall well short of Google’s figures under a heavier browsing workload. They do not show how the same laptop would perform under Google’s own conditions.

Capacity, panel type, and refresh rate

Battery capacity does not explain the spread. Asus, HP, and Lenovo each reported 70 Wh in Tom’s Guide’s figures, yet their runtimes ran from 6:18 to 11:52.

Four of the five units use OLED panels. The Dell XPS Googlebook uses an IPS LCD. Tom’s Guide says OLED tends to consume more power, which is the reviewer’s explanation and not a measured cause. The Dell’s official specification lists a 52 Wh battery, an IPS LCD panel, a variable 30–120 Hz refresh rate, and up to 18 hours of battery life, a figure Dell presents as an estimate. The Dell’s 10:04 result sits in the middle of the group, so panel type alone does not sort the results.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • Established: Five Googlebooks in Tom’s Guide’s live-web browsing test ran between 6:18 and 11:52 in a single run per model.
  • Established: Google’s figures are upper estimates from controlled tests on pre-release hardware and software, and Google says actual battery life may be lower.
  • Not established: Typical battery life for owners, a universal defect, or the cause of any individual model’s result.
  • Not established: How the laptops would perform with more runs, a 60 Hz setting, or Google’s own test conditions.

How to check your own Googlebook’s battery life

If your device seems to drain faster than expected, a fair check is to run the same workload each time instead of comparing a light session with a heavy one. Use these steps:

  1. Set the brightness to a fixed level and keep it there for every run.
  2. Choose the dark theme or the default theme, and record which one you used.
  3. Turn Battery Saver on for a browsing test to match Google’s method, or leave it off to match Tom’s Guide’s setup. Record which you chose.
  4. Check the display’s refresh rate setting and record it. If 60 Hz is available, test it separately to see whether it changes runtime for you.
  5. Turn off Bluetooth and location services if you want to match Tom’s Guide’s method.
  6. Run a discharge from full charge to empty, using the same set of websites or the same local video. Repeat it at least three times and compare the averages.

Google’s 2021 article on Chromebooks describes a Chromebook Diagnostics app that can run a battery discharge test and save a session log that can be shared with customer support. That article covers Chromebooks. The sources available for this article do not confirm that the same app is included in Googlebook OS, so check your device’s installed apps before following that route.
