Creating an animation in Google Photos is a separate creation flow: you select photos or videos and Google Photos makes a quick-moving GIF. The documented steps do not include editing or deleting the selected originals. Deletion is a separate action, and its effects can depend on backup and device settings. Google’s instructions describe the workflow but do not provide an explicit technical guarantee about source-file preservation in every situation.
What happens when you create an animation?
Google Photos describes an animation as a quick-moving GIF made from selected photos and videos. To make one on Android, open Create, choose Animation, select the items, and tap Create. On a computer, select up to 50 photos, choose Create new, then Animation. The creation instructions do not include a step to modify or remove the selected source items. Creating is different from deleting
Google documents deletion as a separate command, not as part of animation creation. Deleted photos and videos remain in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. If backup is on, deleting an item can also remove it from devices with Google Photos installed and from other Google Photos locations, such as albums or shared locations. Archive is not deletion
Archiving hides a photo from the main Photos view; it remains available in albums and search results. Archived items are not used to create animations, and they still count toward your Google Account storage quota. Google Photos: Move photos to archive

Google’s Android guidance says to turn off backup on devices where the photo should remain, then delete the selected backed-up items from photos.google.com. Because deletion can sync across devices and Google Photos locations, follow Google’s current steps closely and confirm backup is off on the relevant devices before deleting.
