The inner display needs careful handling, and replacing it can be expensive. Before buying, check the exact model’s local repair price, warranty and damage-protection terms, and access to authorized service.
What a hinge cycle rating tells you—and what it doesn’t
A folding cycle is one opening and closing of the phone. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 hinge is designed to handle over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. It translates that figure to more than five years at 100 opens and closes per day. This is Samsung’s design estimate for those models, not an independently measured result or a guarantee of whole-phone lifespan. Samsung’s Fold5 and Flip5 hinge guidance explains the estimate.

Samsung gives a similar estimate for the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6: an average of 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles, or roughly five years at around 100 folds per day. That remains a manufacturer estimate, not evidence that one generation fails less often than another. Samsung’s Fold6 and Flip6 support guidance describes the figure.

How to protect the inner screen and hinge
The inner screen is a separate care concern from the hinge. Samsung advises users not to press sharply or excessively on the display, leave objects between the folded panels, or remove the installed screen protector. Sand and small particles can damage the screen or affect hinge performance. Samsung’s care guidance also explains that resistance ratings have limits.
- Keep coins, keys, cards, and debris out of the fold before closing the phone.
- Avoid sharp or excessive pressure on the inner display.
- Keep the installed screen-protector film in place unless the manufacturer directs you to seek service.
- Avoid exposing the hinge to sand and follow the liquid-resistance instructions for your exact model.
- If you use a case, choose one made for the exact foldable model. A case is not evidence of protection against hinge or inner-screen failure.
Water and dust ratings are not equivalent to being waterproof or dustproof. Samsung notes that ratings vary by model, are based on laboratory conditions, and may diminish with normal wear. It also says IP48 does not mean complete dust protection. Motorola likewise advises avoiding dust exposure on the Razr Fold because dust can reduce hinge life or damage the display. Samsung’s guidance and Motorola’s Razr Fold guidance describe these limits.

How much does an inner-screen repair cost?
Samsung’s US price page lists the following suggested prices for subsequent out-of-warranty internal-screen repairs. These are US figures, can vary by region or service location, and exclude taxes and fees; they are not universal quotes. Samsung’s US repair-price page gives the listed amounts and terms.

Samsung’s page also describes promotional first-repair offers with terms. Do not assume a first-repair offer applies to every owner, location, or later repair; check the current terms and obtain a quote for the exact device and service location.

Warranty, accidental damage, and service access
A standard warranty and accidental-damage protection are different kinds of coverage. The applicable terms depend on the phone, country, and plan. For example, Motorola’s cited policy excludes cracked or cosmetically damaged screens unless the damage was caused by a covered defect; its India support guidance says physical damage is charged separately. For repairs outside standard warranty, Motorola India says its service partner provides a quote after receiving the device. Motorola’s Razr Fold support guidance and Motorola India’s support guidance are specific to their respective service contexts.
Before purchasing, check the warranty and any optional protection plan for the exact model and country. Confirm what counts as a covered defect versus accidental damage, whether screen damage is included, and what premiums, deductibles, exclusions, or service limits apply. Also verify repair availability, likely turnaround, and whether service is accessible where you live.

Samsung announced self-repair for select Fold5 and Flip5 models in the US, with genuine parts, tools, and guides, alongside certified walk-in, mail-in, and at-home care options. That announcement does not mean every foldable part is suitable for DIY repair or establish current eligibility in every region. Check the present service options for your model and location. How to compare ownership cost before buying
A meaningful comparison is more than a hinge number or one repair price. Consider the costs and practical consequences that apply to your own use and location:

- Potential major repair: Check the local inner-screen repair quote and whether a promotional first repair differs from later repairs.

- Care constraints: Factor in the need to keep debris away from the fold and follow model-specific screen and liquid-resistance guidance.
- Evidence behind durability claims: Distinguish a manufacturer’s hinge-cycle estimate from independent long-term reliability data.
The available published figures provide manufacturer hinge estimates and selected repair prices, not failure probabilities or average total ownership costs. They therefore cannot support a reliable expected annual repair cost or a ranking of brands by real-world durability.
