Sometimes—but a higher price does not reliably mean better sound. Expensive headphones can sound different, feel more comfortable, or include features that matter to you; whether they sound better is a matter of their tuning and your preferences, not the price tag alone.
What does a higher price actually tell you?
Not enough to predict sound quality by itself. A 2017 study indexed in PubMed found no relationship between retail price and either measured headphone frequency response or its attempt to quantify perceived quality objectively. That challenges price as a shortcut for judging sound; it does not show that all headphones sound alike or account for comfort, construction, features, or brand positioning. Read the study record.

Headphones can differ in tonal balance: how much bass, midrange, and treble you hear. A difference in response is not automatically an improvement. Preference depends on the listener, and other reasons to pay more—such as comfort, noise cancellation, wireless operation, or materials—are separate from fidelity.

In this article, “headphones” means listening devices generally. “Headset” often refers to headphones with an integrated microphone, as commonly used for gaming or communications; a microphone is a feature, not proof of better music reproduction.

Why can two headphones sound different?
Frequency response shapes tonal balance
Frequency response is a major part of how headphones sound. In a 2012 paper, Sean Olive and Todd Welti reported double-blind listening tests involving six popular circumaural (over-ear) headphones. The most preferred models were perceived to have the most neutral spectral balance and the lowest coloration. Their finding connects response and preference; it does not establish that the most expensive model—or any particular price tier—will be preferred. See the Audio Engineering Society paper abstract.
There is no single curve everyone prefers
RTINGS reports a double-blind test in which 35 participants evaluated five target curves, with no clear preferred curve. RTINGS also notes that frequency response remains important while personal preference influences which headphones someone likes. The participants were RTINGS employees, so this is one bounded listening study, not a representative survey of all listeners. Read RTINGS’ account of the listening tests.

- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Fit affects what you hear—and what a measurement shows
Fit and placement can change the seal and the resulting sound, particularly for over-ear and on-ear headphones. RTINGS’ methodology uses a Brüel & Kjær Type 5128-B head-and-torso simulator, calibrates at 94 dB SPL, and repeats placements to observe variation. It reseats over-ear and on-ear headphones five times, and in-ear headphones three times. The methodology, updated June 3, 2025, follows IEC 60268-7 and notes uncertainty in high-frequency measurements because ear morphology varies. A test-rig graph is useful evidence, but it cannot perfectly predict how a headphone will fit every person; results from different rigs should not be treated as directly interchangeable. Read the measurement methodology.

In RTINGS’ reported experiments, group ABX results did not distinguish the tested headphone pairs above chance, and distortion was largely inaudible for most participants at normal playback levels. One listener could detect differences, so the result is limited to the headphones, listeners, and conditions tested—not a rule that distortion never matters. The described similarity task involved five headphones and nine participants, with listening calibrated to 83 dBA using recordings made at 94 dBA. Those are test conditions, not recommended everyday listening levels. Read RTINGS’ distortion experiments.

How to decide whether a more expensive pair is worth it
Compare the specific headphones on the things you will actually notice and use. A higher price may buy a preferred tonal balance or better fit for you, but it can also reflect features or construction rather than an audible improvement in music playback.
- Tonal balance: Does the bass, midrange, and treble presentation suit your listening preferences?
- Fit and comfort: Does the headphone sit securely, form a suitable seal, and remain comfortable during your usual listening sessions?
- Features: Do you need wireless operation, noise cancellation, portability, or a microphone? These can be useful without improving fidelity.
- Build and serviceability: Are the materials or replaceable parts valuable to you? The cited studies do not compare models on these factors.
- Value: Is the particular benefit worth the extra cost to you? There is no established universal price point at which headphones become audibly better.
For a broad comparison of options, start with the over-ear headphones category, then evaluate the individual products rather than assuming the highest-priced choice is best.

How to compare headphones fairly
- Choose familiar content. Use the same music or other audio on each pair so you are comparing the headphones, not different recordings.
- Match playback levels as closely as practical. A louder pair can seem more impressive even when its tonal balance is the main difference.
- Check fit and placement. Adjust each pair so it sits as intended; a poor seal or uncomfortable fit can change the experience.
- Hide the identity and price if practical. A blind comparison can reduce expectations tied to branding or cost, though it cannot make personal preference objective.
- Judge the benefits you care about. Consider sound, comfort, and useful features separately instead of treating them as one measure of “better.”
