Some Cyberpunk 2077 mods work with the latest game version, but there is no blanket compatibility guarantee. As of October 12, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED’s REDmod support form labels version 2.31 as the latest release. A mod is safe to use only when its own listing, dependencies and installation method support the exact version installed on your PC.
Check your game’s version in the main menu before installing or troubleshooting anything. Game updates can invalidate scripts, frameworks and other files until their maintainers release compatible updates.

What “latest version” means for Cyberpunk 2077 mods
Version numbers are the first compatibility check, not proof that a mod will work. CD PROJEKT RED’s official REDmod issue form currently marks 2.31 as “Latest”; the form was accessed on October 12, 2026. That label is an official reference, not a guarantee that every Steam, GOG or Epic installation is already on 2.31. Your installation may be older, may be waiting for an update, or may have a different executable state after a patch or rollback.

To find your installed version, launch Cyberpunk 2077 and read the version number on the main menu. CD PROJEKT RED specifically directs players to that screen when reporting REDmod problems: official REDmod support form.

The official news archive dates Patch 2.31 to September 11, 2025 and Update 2.3 to July 16, 2025. Those dates provide useful context when a mod page refers to a patch by number, but the number shown in your game remains the one that matters for installation.
The compatibility rule: evaluate each mod, not the game in general
Cyberpunk 2077 supports community modding, but “the game supports mods” does not mean every mod supports every patch. A listing can become outdated when the game changes its executable, scripts, user-interface files, archives or the frameworks on which other mods depend. A cosmetic replacement may survive a patch while a scripting framework fails immediately; two mods that work separately can also conflict with one another.
CD PROJEKT RED says community mods are not reviewed by the studio. The mod’s current listing and maintainer notes are therefore the practical authority for version support, requirements and known conflicts. The studio’s modding support page points PC players toward community listings, Nexus Mods and Vortex, while also allowing manual installation when a mod’s instructions call for it.
Five checks to make on a mod page

If a listing does not state support for your version, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming that an older file will work. No official statistic establishes what percentage of the mod library is compatible at any given time.

REDmod explained: useful toolset, not a compatibility guarantee
REDmod is free downloadable content for the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077. It adds integrated support for installing and loading REDmod-compatible mods and includes tools for creating mods. It is one loading format and toolset, not a universal compatibility layer that updates every community file automatically.
REDmod-compatible content is installed in the game’s mods directory and can be enabled or disabled through supported launchers. Older archive-folder mods remain supported, but CD PROJEKT RED’s documentation says they do not appear in the REDmod menu. A legacy mod can therefore be installed correctly while being invisible in that menu.
The distinction is documented in the Edgerunners Update (Patch 1.6) notes. Always follow the individual package’s instructions: a REDmod package and a legacy archive are not interchangeable merely because both modify the same game.
Step-by-step compatibility workflow
1. Record the installed game version
- Start Cyberpunk 2077 from your normal PC launcher.
- Wait for the main menu and write down the displayed version number.
- Compare that number with the mod page, its requirements and each dependency’s compatibility notes.
Do not rely on the date of a launcher update or on a guide written for a previous patch. The number in the running game is the reference point.

2. Read the current mod listing completely
Open the mod’s current page rather than an old installation guide or a search-result snippet. Check the description, files, changelog, pinned posts and bug reports. Look for an explicit 2.31 statement if that is your installed version. If the author says the mod is broken after a recent update, or asks users to wait for a framework update, do not install it on a live save expecting it to work.
3. Map every dependency before copying files
Make a short list of the mod’s required frameworks and libraries. Then check each one for the same game-version support, current release and installation path. A dependency that loads before the visible mod can produce crashes, missing menus or silent failures that look like a problem with the main download.
Pay attention to optional requirements as well. An optional integration may be necessary for a feature you intend to use, even if the base mod technically launches without it.

Use the method stated by the maintainer. For a REDmod-compatible package, place the supplied mod folder in the game’s mods directory and use the supported launcher controls. For a legacy archive mod, use the legacy location documented by that package; do not expect it to appear in the REDmod menu. Manual installation is valid when the instructions describe it, but every file must go to the path specified by the author.

CD PROJEKT RED’s official guidance references Nexus Mods and Vortex as community distribution and management options. Those tools can simplify deployment, but they do not determine whether a particular file is compatible with your patch.
5. Keep a reversible baseline
- Back up your save files before changing a large mod setup.
- Record which files and dependencies you installed, including their versions.
- Add or update one major mod or framework at a time so a new failure has a clear suspect.
- Keep the downloaded archives until the setup has launched and behaved normally.
These are troubleshooting precautions, not an official guarantee that a save can be recovered after every mod change. A mod that changes quests, scripts or saved-state data can have effects that remain after its files are removed.

A game update can break mods in several ways. Changed scripts can invalidate a framework; changed archive structures can prevent assets from loading; altered interfaces can make menus disappear; and a new executable can cause a native plugin to fail before the game reaches the main menu. Dependencies may need updates even when the visible mod’s own files did not change.
GOG Support gave unusually strong advice for the historical Update 2.0 transition: uninstall mods before updating because the scale of that update could cause more issues than usual, then wait for the community to update them. That was guidance for the 2023 Update 2.0 transition, not a permanent instruction to uninstall every mod before every patch. It illustrates the risk of major changes rather than proving that a current 2.31 update requires the same procedure: GOG’s Cyberpunk 2077 support article.
Before a planned update
- Note your current game, framework and mod versions.
- Read the launcher’s patch notes and the maintainers’ announcements.
- Make a clean backup of saves and your mod list.
- If a maintainer recommends disabling or removing a framework, follow that specific instruction.
After an update
- Launch the unmodified game once and confirm the new main-menu version.
- Check the core frameworks first; they often determine whether dependent mods can load.
- Update only files whose maintainers declare support for the new version.
- Re-enable mods in small groups, testing the game after each group.
- If the game fails, return to the last known-good group rather than deleting random files.
Waiting is often the correct choice after a major patch. The absence of a compatibility note is not evidence that a mod works.
Diagnosing a mod problem
The game will not start or crashes immediately
Remove or update recently changed native plugins and their required frameworks first. Then test with all community files disabled. If the unmodified game launches, restore dependencies and mods one at a time. Official REDmod support asks users reporting issues whether they used mods, trainers or console commands, which reflects how these additions can affect diagnosis: CD PROJEKT RED’s issue form.
A mod does not appear in the REDmod menu
Check its format. Legacy archive-folder mods are still loaded by the game but are not listed in the REDmod menu. Confirm that a REDmod package is inside the correct mods directory and that the launcher is using the same game installation where you copied the files.

Recheck dependencies, load-order instructions and conflicts. A patch-compatible main file can still fail when a required library is missing or an older interface mod overwrites the same files. Read the mod’s bug reports before replacing files manually.
Only one save or area is affected
Compare behavior with a clean test save and with the mod disabled, following the maintainer’s removal instructions. Do not repeatedly overwrite your only save while changing script-heavy mods. Some changes may be stored in save data, so disabling a file is not always a complete reversal.
PC scope and console limits
The official instructions covered here describe PC file paths, REDmod and PC launchers. They do not establish community-mod compatibility for PlayStation or Xbox versions. Do not transfer PC installation directions to a console unless the platform holder and the specific mod documentation explicitly support that process.
How to judge a mod listing quickly

Bottom line for version 2.31
Some Cyberpunk 2077 mods may work with version 2.31, while others may need updates or may remain incompatible. Confirm 2.31 in your own main menu, then verify the mod, every required framework, the installation format and the conflict notes on their current listings. REDmod makes supported loading and management easier, but it cannot certify community files. If a major patch has just arrived and maintainers have not posted compatibility information, waiting is safer than forcing an old setup onto the new build.
