Do Collagen Supplements Cause Side Effects? What to Watch For

Studies generally describe oral collagen as well tolerated, but digestive discomfort and occasional rash have been reported. Learn what the evidence can—and cannot—say about side effects.

Collagen supplements can cause side effects, although the available studies generally describe oral collagen as well tolerated. Reported problems include stomach discomfort, bloating and, occasionally, a rash. The studies are too limited to establish how often these reactions happen or to rule out uncommon or long-term harms.

What side effects have been reported?

The reactions described in human studies are mostly mild digestive symptoms. A narrative review of oral collagen research describes stomach heaviness, pain and bloating. In some studies, participants stopped taking collagen because of gastrointestinal problems. The same review describes one mild facial rash that resolved after the participant stopped taking the supplement.

These are reports from individual studies, not proof that collagen itself caused each symptom. Products and study formulations may include other ingredients, and a symptom can have causes unrelated to a supplement. The rash report, for example, does not establish how likely a rash is for other users or whether collagen was the trigger.

Digestive discomfort or a rash is worth noticing if it starts after you begin a product, returns after a serving, or improves after you stop. That timing can be useful information for a health professional, but it does not confirm the cause. The available evidence does not provide a reliable percentage for the chance of any particular reaction.

In practical terms, watch for a change that is new after starting the supplement, especially persistent stomach discomfort, bloating, pain or a rash. Keep in mind that timing alone cannot distinguish a supplement reaction from an unrelated illness, a medicine effect or a response to another ingredient. The studies summarized here do not establish a typical onset time, a dose at which symptoms occur, or a symptom pattern that can identify collagen as the cause.

How reassuring is the safety evidence?

Systematic reviews offer some reassurance, but their findings describe the studies they included—not a guarantee that every product is safe for every person. A 2026 systematic literature review included 25 randomized controlled trials of hydrolyzed collagen. Individual trials enrolled between 13 and 236 participants; the review characterized adverse events as low-incidence and collagen as generally well tolerated. It also rated most included trials as having a high risk of bias, which limits confidence in the results.

A separate 2019 systematic review by Choi, Sung, Juhasz and Atanaskova Mesinkovska examined dermatological uses. It included 11 studies and 805 patients and reported no adverse events in those studies. That is a finding about those included studies and populations. It is not a count of all people who use collagen, and it cannot show that reactions never occur.

Review What it included Safety finding How to interpret it
Systematic review of hydrolyzed collagen RCTs, 2026 25 randomized trials; sample sizes ranged from 13 to 236 participants Adverse events were described as low-incidence and collagen as generally well tolerated Most trials were rated at high risk of bias; the review does not establish a universal risk percentage.
Choi et al., dermatological applications, 2019 11 studies; 805 patients No adverse events were reported in the included studies This finding applies to those studies and patients, not every product or user.

The reviews do not establish the risk of rare reactions or the effects of taking collagen over a long period. Their studies also vary in duration, product source and formulation. Small samples can be useful for identifying commonly reported problems, but they cannot reliably rule out uncommon harms. Accordingly, “generally well tolerated” means the studies did not show frequent or prominent problems; it does not mean side-effect-free.

The numbers in these reviews should not be combined into a population-wide estimate. The 25 trials and the 11 dermatology studies represent particular research questions, participants and products. A trial involving a few dozen participants may not detect an uncommon event, and a study that reports no adverse events does not prove that no participant experienced an unrecorded or unreported symptom. Differences in study duration also mean that short-term findings cannot answer every question about longer use.

Orgain 20g Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides Powder, Unflavored, 1lb
  • CLEANER INGREDIENTS: Includes hydrolyzed grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine collagen peptides and essential amino acids: Lysine, Leucine, Histidine, Methionine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Theronine, Valine
  • HIGHER STANDARDS: Because we’re serious about clean, you can rest assured this product is made without lactose, dairy or soy ingredients, gluten free, has no sugar added*, Non-GMO, and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or colors.
  • EASY TO MIX: Since it’s unflavored and dissolves easily, this collagen blend can be used any way! Hot or cold – stir it (we love it in coffee), blend it (protein shake, anyone?), bake it (a secret upgrade for that batch of cookies?).
  • 20G COLLAGEN PEPTIDES PER SERVING: Every serving (2 scoops!) packs 20g of odorless and colorless Type I and III grass-fed, pasture-raised collagen hydrolysate peptides, essential amino acids and approximately 18g of protein.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT: Includes 1 (1 Lb) ready to mix Orgain Collagen Peptides Powder. Great for Women & Men.

There is therefore no evidence-based way here to give an individual a precise probability of experiencing a side effect. The reviews provide context: reactions were not prominent in the included trials, and reported event incidence was low in one review, but evidence limitations leave uncertainty. People should not interpret a reassuring average finding as a personal safety guarantee.

Why the product label matters

“Collagen supplement” covers products that may differ in animal source, form and added ingredients. Oral products include powders and capsules. A reaction could relate to collagen, another listed ingredient, or something else; evidence from a particular study does not necessarily apply to a different product.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) cautions that supplements bought in stores or online may differ from products tested in research. It also notes that supplements can interact with medicines and may pose risks for people with certain medical problems or surgery planned. A study on one formulation therefore cannot establish the safety of every product sold under the same broad category.

Powder and capsule are simply forms of oral supplements; the evidence summarized here does not show that one form has fewer side effects or is safer than the other. Nor does it establish a safer brand, animal source or specific formulation. A label can help you identify what is in a product and whether it raises a personal concern, but it cannot guarantee that you will not react.

Check the full ingredient list

  • Look for the stated animal source as well as the full list of ingredients, not only the front-of-package description.
  • If you have a known food allergy, check whether the listed source or any other ingredient is a concern for you. The available sources do not provide a reliable collagen-specific allergy rate or establish that any source is universally safe.
  • Read the serving directions and do not assume that a product with a familiar ingredient name matches a product used in a clinical study.
  • If you take medicines, have a medical condition, or have surgery planned, ask a health professional or pharmacist whether the supplement is appropriate for you.

This is a label-reading and suitability check, not a way to predict or prevent every reaction. If the source or ingredients are unclear, or you are unsure whether they matter for your allergies or health, get individualized advice rather than guessing.

When comparing products, focus on information that can actually help you make a suitability decision: the stated animal source, complete ingredient list, and serving directions. If a product combines collagen with other ingredients, be aware that a reaction may be difficult to attribute to collagen alone. Do not rely on a study of a particular formulation as evidence about a different one, and do not assume that a product is safer because it is sold in a familiar store or online.

What to do if you notice a reaction

If you think a collagen supplement is causing a problem, FDA consumer guidance advises stopping the supplement and seeking medical care or advice. Serious or urgent symptoms call for prompt medical attention; do not wait to see whether they pass. This article cannot diagnose a reaction or determine whether a symptom is an emergency for a particular person.

  1. Stop taking the suspected product. FDA advises consumers who suspect an adverse event to stop the supplement and seek medical advice or care.
  2. Get urgent help for serious or urgent symptoms. Follow local emergency-care guidance rather than relying on an online article.
  3. Keep the container and label. The ingredient list, serving directions and product details can help a clinician or pharmacist assess what you took.
  4. Tell the health professional when symptoms began and what else you take. This provides context for assessing a possible connection and considering other explanations.
  5. In the United States, report a suspected adverse event to FDA. FDA asks consumers to report suspected problems with dietary supplements. Reporting does not by itself establish that the supplement caused the event, but it gives the agency information to monitor.

Do not restart a product to test whether symptoms return without first getting individualized medical advice. A recurring symptom may be important to discuss, but deliberately repeating exposure is not a safe way to establish the cause.

When you speak with a clinician or pharmacist, bring the product or a clear record of its label, including any added ingredients. Explain when you began taking it, how you used it according to the label, when symptoms appeared, and whether you take medicines or other supplements. These details can help the professional assess the event, while still recognizing that the timing does not prove the supplement caused it.

What U.S. supplement rules mean for consumers

In the United States, FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. Companies are responsible for ensuring their products meet applicable requirements; FDA monitors reports and may act when a product is unsafe or noncompliant. That system is different from a premarket approval process, so a product being sold is not proof that FDA has verified it is safe or effective for you.

FDA advises consumers to follow label directions, discuss benefits and risks with a health professional, and report suspected adverse events. Its consumer guidance recommends talking with a doctor, nurse, registered dietitian or pharmacist before buying or taking a supplement. Rules and oversight can differ outside the United States; the FDA explanation here is specific to U.S. consumers.

FDA’s advice is to discuss a supplement’s potential benefits and risks with a health professional before buying or taking it. This is especially relevant if you have a medical concern, use medicines or have surgery planned, since general consumer information cannot determine suitability for your circumstances. A product’s availability on a shelf or website should not be treated as proof of premarket FDA approval.

Practical takeaway before taking collagen

Available studies suggest oral collagen is generally tolerated, while also documenting occasional digestive symptoms and a rash report. The evidence is not strong enough to give a dependable individual risk estimate or rule out rare and long-term harms. Before taking a product, review its complete label and consider your allergies, medicines, health conditions and any planned surgery with a clinician or pharmacist. If you develop a suspected reaction, stop the supplement and seek appropriate medical advice; report suspected adverse events to FDA if you are in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are collagen supplement side effects common?

The available reviews describe oral collagen as generally well tolerated, and one review of hydrolyzed collagen trials characterized adverse events as low-incidence. But study limitations mean there is no dependable percentage for an individual, and uncommon or long-term harms have not been ruled out.

Can collagen cause bloating or a rash?

Human studies have reported gastrointestinal discomfort, including heaviness, pain and bloating, and one review describes a mild facial rash that resolved after the participant stopped the supplement. These reports do not prove collagen caused the symptoms or show how often they occur.

Does a review reporting no adverse events mean collagen is side-effect-free?

No. A 2019 dermatology review reported no adverse events among the 11 studies and 805 patients it included. That finding applies to those studies and does not establish that every product or user is free of risk.

Should I stop taking collagen if I notice a reaction?

FDA consumer guidance advises stopping a supplement suspected of causing an adverse event and seeking medical care or advice. Seek prompt help for serious or urgent symptoms, and do not restart the product to test a suspected reaction without individualized medical advice.

Can collagen interact with medicines or be unsuitable before surgery?

NCCIH notes that supplements can interact with medicines and may pose risks for people with certain medical problems or surgery planned. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about your situation before taking a product.

Are collagen powders safer than capsules?

The evidence summarized here does not compare powder and capsule safety or establish that one form causes fewer side effects. Check the complete ingredient list and serving directions; products can vary in source and added ingredients.

Does FDA approve collagen supplements before they are sold in the United States?

FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before marketing. Companies are responsible for meeting applicable requirements, and FDA monitors reports and may act when products are unsafe or noncompliant.

The Bottom Line

Oral collagen appears generally well tolerated in the studies reviewed, but digestive discomfort and an occasional rash have been reported, and the evidence cannot rule out rare or long-term harms. Check the complete product label and discuss personal concerns, medicines, medical conditions or planned surgery with a clinician or pharmacist. Stop a product you suspect is causing a reaction and seek appropriate medical advice.
