Treat it as a monitoring tool: a catch is a reason to investigate, while no catch does not prove a room is clear.
What a bed bug monitor can tell you
A monitor is designed to help find bed bugs or track activity over time. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends continued monitoring as part of integrated pest management (IPM), including after treatment to check whether the population has been eliminated and to watch for reintroduction. Monitoring complements treatment; it does not replace it. EPA bed bug guidance.

A trap does not act as a reliable barrier between you and bed bugs. It may catch some bugs, but it cannot ensure that others will not reach a person. Nor does a negative result rule out an infestation: the device’s placement, deployment time and the bugs’ movement all matter.

Passive interceptors and active monitors work differently
Passive interceptor traps
Interceptors are usually placed beneath furniture legs. They capture bugs moving between the floor and a bed or other furniture, without using an attractant. This makes them useful for checking furniture legs and for monitoring activity over time. In a 2011 study in lightly infested apartments, interceptors deployed for seven days caught numbers similar to a dry-ice trap deployed for one day. That result compares those specific deployment schedules; it does not establish that interceptors are always more effective. 2011 apartment-monitoring study.

Active attractant monitors
Active monitors draw bugs using cues such as carbon dioxide, heat, or a scent lure, sometimes in combination. They are not all pheromone traps, and the word “pheromone” on a product does not show that it uses a specific lure or has been validated in the same way as a research device. A 2011 apartment study ranked the tested active monitors dry-ice trap, CDC3000, then NightWatch; that ranking applies to those devices and the study’s conditions, not every model currently sold. 2011 apartment-monitoring study.
What the lure studies actually found
Published results show that particular lures can improve catch under defined test conditions. They do not establish that every retail product marketed as a pheromone trap performs similarly.

- WHERE TO USE: Place bed bug interceptors in your home or hotel rooms near bed headboards and legs, between the mattress and box spring, and near other other areas where people visit frequently such as sofas and recliners
- HOW TO USE: Set bed bug detector traps by pressing the button to activate attractant and monitor by peeling back the window label; for best results, use both bed bug traps
- MONITOR BEFORE & AFTER TREATMENT: Use bed bug interceptor traps to confirm the presence of bed bugs before beginning treatment and to confirm they are gone after treatment

- A 2013 study found that adding its experimental chemical lure increased catch in a Climbup interceptor by 2.2 times. 2013 monitor study.
- A 2015 study tested a sugar-yeast monitor and an experimental lure mixture containing nonanal, L-lactic acid, 1-octen-3-ol and spearmint oil. In naturally infested apartments, the sugar-yeast monitor with that lure performed comparably to a dry-ice monitor using the same lure. In pairwise comparisons when carbon dioxide was present, catch with the experimental lure was 7.2 times greater. These are findings for the tested devices, lure and deployment—not a general success rate for consumer traps. 2015 sugar-yeast monitor study.
- During that study’s first eight hours, the sugar-yeast mixture released an average of 405.1 ml/min of carbon dioxide, compared with 397.0 ml/min from dry ice. Those measurements describe the study’s setups, not a specification for retail monitors. 2015 sugar-yeast monitor study.
Historical context also matters: an EPA newsletter published in Winter 2015 described work by Simon Fraser University scientists Gerhard and Regine Gries and chemist Robert Britton. It reported that an earlier attractant blend worked in laboratory experiments but failed in infested apartments until researchers identified a missing component. That account illustrates why results from a laboratory lure cannot automatically be applied to a current product. EPA’s Winter 2015 bed bug newsletter.
How to use a monitor as part of a response
- Choose the device for the job. Use passive interceptors to check bugs moving at furniture legs. Consider an active monitor when its instructions and tested cues fit the situation; do not assume that every active device uses pheromones.
- Follow its placement and timing instructions. A one-day test and a seven-day deployment are not interchangeable. Keep the monitor in place for the specified period and check it as directed.
- Record what you find. Note where the device was placed, when it was checked and whether it captured an insect. A captured specimen can help an expert identify the problem.
- Seek confirmation before costly treatment. Bed bugs can be mistaken for other insects. The federal strategy recommends confirmation by a qualified expert, and EPA advises consulting a qualified pest management professional when bed bugs are suspected. Federal bed bug strategy; EPA: How to find bed bugs.
- Use monitoring alongside a treatment plan. EPA’s IPM guidance calls for addressing the infestation, checking results and continuing to monitor. Treatment effectiveness can depend on infestation extent, preparation, coverage, life stage and pesticide resistance; a trap alone does not resolve those factors. EPA bed bug guidance.
Mattress and box-spring encasements are a complementary detection aid: federal guidance notes that they can make signs easier to see. They are not attractants or a cure. Federal bed bug strategy.

Why a monitor cannot guarantee bite prevention
Bed bugs are attracted to warmth, blood and carbon dioxide—not dirt or grime, according to EPA. A monitor that uses an attractant may capture bugs, but it cannot guarantee that every bug will choose the trap instead of reaching a person. Passive interceptors catch bugs that cross their path; they do not cover every route into a bed or room. EPA bed bug myths.
Likewise, an empty trap is not proof that the room is free of bed bugs. A result depends on the device, where and how long it was deployed, and whether bugs encountered it. EPA says suspected infestations should be confirmed by a qualified expert and recommends methodical IPM with continued monitoring.
