No. An automatic watch does not need a watch winder. Without one, it will eventually stop when its stored power runs down; you can restart it using the instructions for that specific model. A winder is an optional convenience if you want a watch to stay running between wears, especially when resetting its date or other complications would be a nuisance.
What a watch winder does
An automatic watch is a mechanical watch whose rotor uses wrist movement to wind the mainspring. A watch winder rotates the watch while it is off your wrist to keep it wound, so it may be ready to wear without manual winding and resetting. Orbita describes that convenience in its Q&A.
Keeping a watch running is not the same as proving that it needs continuous motion for its health. Orbita’s Winder Basics also warns that continuous rotation increases wear on winding-mechanism components. Claims that a winder prevents damage or keeps lubricants in place should be treated as the manufacturer’s view, not as independently demonstrated advice.
When a winder may be useful
- You rotate among several watches and want one to be ready without winding and setting it each time.
- Resetting the calendar or another complication is inconvenient.
- You prefer keeping a watch running while it is off your wrist.
If you are comfortable letting the watch stop and restarting it when you wear it, a winder is not required by the cited manufacturer guidance. A stopped watch, by itself, is not evidence that it has been damaged.

Check the exact movement before choosing settings
Winders are not a one-setting-fits-all accessory. Check your watch’s manual or manufacturer guidance for turns per day (TPD) and winding direction, then make sure the winder supports those requirements. Orbita’s undated Q&A gives 500 to 800 TPD as a general range for most automatic watches, says some movements with longer power reserves require 1300 TPD, and notes that some movements wind in only one direction. These are Orbita’s general figures, not a substitute for guidance for your exact movement.
For example, Rolex says in its FAQ that a Rolex worn daily does not need winding. Depending on the model, a Rolex left aside can retain charge for up to 70 hours; Rolex also explains how to restart one by manually winding it. That reserve figure applies to Rolex models as described by Rolex, not to automatic watches generally.

Seiko’s instructions for the cited 4R57 movement say it operates for about 41 hours when fully wound and describe winding it by crown or movement after it stops. That is a figure for that movement, not a universal reserve estimate. See Seiko’s 4R57 instructions for its specific procedure.
How to decide
- Decide whether you want the watch to keep running. If restarting it when needed is fine, you can store it without a winder.
- Consider how much resetting matters. A winder may save time if setting the calendar or other complications is a recurring inconvenience.
- Find your movement’s winding requirements. Use the watch manual or manufacturer guidance to confirm TPD and winding direction.
- Check the winder’s supported settings. Choose a programmable model only if its settings match the requirements for your movement.
Avoid buying a winder solely on claims that it extends service life or prevents lubricant migration unless you can find independent, watchmaker-supported evidence for that specific claim.

How to store an automatic watch without a winder
For a watch that will be unworn for a long time, Seiko recommends a well-ventilated place, such as the original box or a similar box, in a room that is not too humid or too hot or cold, and away from magnetic sources and phones. See Seiko’s storage guidance. This is a storage option; it is not a recommendation to keep the watch powered continuously.
