Amazon’s delivery drones may pause service in hot weather, but the often-cited 104°F cutoff is a report from 2024 about planned service near Tolleson, Arizona—not a confirmed, current rule for every Prime Air location. Amazon now says its MK30 drone can operate above 110°F, while also stating that local flights depend on real-time weather decisions. Its public operations information does not give a current numeric heat cutoff.
Where the 104°F cutoff came from
In a May 7, 2024 report about Amazon’s planned Tolleson-area service, WIRED quoted Calsee Hendrickson, then director of product and program management for Prime Air: “We won’t take orders when the temperature gets above 104 degrees,” WIRED reported. The statement described order acceptance in that launch context; it was not presented as a nationwide drone specification.

That distinction matters: a limit on taking orders is not necessarily the same as an aircraft’s maximum operating temperature. The WIRED report does not establish that 104°F remains Amazon’s current cutoff in Tolleson or elsewhere.
What Amazon says about the MK30 now
Amazon’s current MK30 technology page says the aircraft can operate below freezing and above 110°F. That is Amazon’s published capability claim, not a guarantee that it will accept or complete deliveries at every temperature, site, or time.

| Claim | What it describes | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Above 104°F | Amazon would not take orders above this temperature, according to an executive quoted in the report. | WIRED, May 7, 2024; planned Tolleson-area service context. |
| Above 110°F | Published MK30 operating-temperature capability. | Amazon Prime Air technology page, accessed September 28, 2026. |
These figures are not interchangeable: one concerns accepting orders in a particular 2024 context, and the other describes the aircraft’s stated operating capability. The public information does not explain how they relate or establish a current order cutoff.
Why a drone-capable temperature may not mean a delivery
Amazon says Prime Air monitors weather in real time and makes go/no-go decisions. Its operations information says flights may be suspended in adverse weather, including high winds, low visibility, or moderate to heavy precipitation. It does not specify a numeric heat threshold.

Temperature capability is only one part of deciding whether a flight can operate. Prime Air describes planned routes, flight monitors, a defined flight profile, and FAA-approved beyond-visual-line-of-sight authorizations; it operates as an FAA Part 135 certificated air carrier. The public descriptions do not spell out a precise heat-related go/no-go formula for customers.

Prime Air service is limited to eligible delivery points, not simply everyone within a broad metro area. In December 2024, Amazon described MK30 service in parts of the Phoenix-area West Valley and College Station. Its launch description covered eligible items weighing five pounds or less and deliveries in 60 minutes or less in eligible areas. The FAA’s site-review materials provide operational context for specific locations; those reviews should not be read as one set of nationwide service rules.

Amazon says the MK30 can fly up to 7.5 miles from its delivery center, cruises at over 60 mph, can fly in light rain, and uses obstacle detection that can prompt it to change course or return without delivering. The FAA lists the MK30’s maximum takeoff weight as 83.2 pounds in its site-review materials. These specifications help describe the aircraft, but do not establish a customer-facing heat policy.

There is no public figure in the cited sources for how many flights or operating hours heat has cost Amazon, nor a current, universal cutoff customers can use to predict a shutdown. The 2024 Tolleson statement and Amazon’s current temperature-capability claim therefore answer different questions; neither alone tells you whether a drone order will be available in your neighborhood on a hot day.
