No. Many PC laptops ship with Windows, but Apple Mac laptops use macOS, Chromebooks use ChromeOS, and some models are sold with Linux or no preinstalled operating system. The configuration depends on the specific model and seller, so check the operating system named in the listing before you buy.
Which operating systems come on laptops?
The operating system is the main software that runs the laptop and lets you use applications, files, and connected devices. These are the main configurations shoppers may encounter:

- Windows: Common on PC laptops. The edition and support status vary by device. Microsoft’s Intune documentation lists Windows 11 editions and records that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. That date concerns Microsoft support; it does not by itself establish whether a particular older laptop remains usable. Microsoft’s supported-platforms reference.
- macOS: Apple’s operating system for Mac computers. For a laptop shopper, that means looking at a MacBook rather than assuming every laptop runs Windows.
- ChromeOS: The operating system supplied on Chromebooks. A Chromebook is a laptop, but it does not run Windows by default.
- Linux: A family of operating systems, with distributions such as Ubuntu. A laptop may be offered with Linux, but support for a management service does not guarantee that every application or hardware component works with every distribution. Microsoft’s Intune documentation, for example, lists Ubuntu Desktop and Red Hat Enterprise Linux as supported platforms for that service. Microsoft’s supported-platforms reference.
- No preinstalled operating system: Some sellers offer PC configurations without an operating system. Availability depends on the market and model; check what installation help, licensing, and setup are included.
How ChromeOS differs from ChromeOS Flex
ChromeOS comes on Chromebooks, while ChromeOS Flex is an installable option for certain existing Windows, Mac, or Linux computers. Google says Flex has most, but not all, ChromeOS features. Standard ChromeOS devices have a Google security chip and verified boot; ChromeOS Flex devices do not. Flex also does not support ARM architecture, and Google guarantees it only on certified models. Features such as fingerprint readers, active pens, and Thunderbolt functionality are not officially supported or maintained for Flex. Before installing it, check Google’s ChromeOS Flex comparison and certified models for the exact computer.
How to choose the right operating system
There is no single best operating system for every laptop buyer. Compare the system with your apps, hardware, and setup needs before choosing:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Check essential apps and files. Confirm that the software you need for work, school, creative projects, or games runs on the operating system and edition you plan to use.
- Check the exact hardware. Verify compatibility for the laptop model, processor architecture, and peripherals. For ChromeOS Flex, use Google’s certified-model information; ARM computers are not supported. Google’s ChromeOS Flex information.
- Check updates and support. Look up the operating system’s version and support status. For example, Microsoft records October 14, 2025 as Windows 10’s end-of-support date. Microsoft’s supported-platforms reference.
- Understand setup requirements. A laptop without a preinstalled OS may require you to choose and install an operating system and obtain any needed license. Do not assume it will be ready to use in the same way as a configured laptop.
- Consider your ecosystem and policies. Your other devices, accounts, school or employer requirements, and management rules may determine which systems are practical.
What operating-system statistics can—and cannot—tell you
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey reported that, in September 2026, 95.03% of its respondents used Windows, 1.92% used macOS, and 3.05% used Linux. The survey is monthly, optional, and anonymous. Those figures describe Steam survey participants, not all laptop owners, laptop sales, or the operating-system share of the laptop market.
