Quality depends on what the model is asked to do, which language variety is tested, what data is available, and how the test is designed.
What does “multilingual” actually tell you?
It tells you that a model can process or generate more than one language under some conditions. It does not, by itself, tell you how well the model translates, answers questions, reasons, follows instructions, or writes naturally in each one.

Those are different capabilities. A system might translate a familiar sentence well but misunderstand a culturally specific question; it might produce fluent text while getting factual answers wrong. Even within one language, results can vary by dialect, script, register, and subject. So a language count is a measure of claimed or tested breadth—not proof of equal capability.

Why can performance differ from one language to another?
Training data is unevenly available
Models learn patterns from data, and the amount and kind of available text vary by language. The FLORES-101 machine-translation paper reports that translation quality remains low even for some high-resource-to-low-resource language directions, concluding that limited training data strongly constrains performance. That is a finding about the translation settings studied, not a rule that predicts every model’s results on every task.
Data quantity is not the only consideration. The material available may not represent a language’s dialects, everyday usage, specialized vocabulary, or cultural context. A model can therefore perform unevenly even when a language appears in its training or evaluation coverage.
Languages encode information differently
Languages do not all express grammatical relationships in the same way. A 21-language study by Futrell and colleagues found that complex inflectional morphology was one cause of differences in language-model predictability. Its finding helps explain why a task or scoring method can be easier for some written forms than others; it does not make any language inherently inferior or establish a universal ranking of difficulty.

Some systems can favor English-like patterns
A 2023 study of multilingual BERT found preferences for explicit pronouns and subject–verb–object ordering in its fluency evaluation. Those preferences matter because a sentence can be grammatical and natural in one language while differing from common English patterns. The result is specific to the model and evaluation studied; it should not be generalized to every multilingual model or task.
What do multilingual benchmarks establish—and what do they not?
Benchmarks make comparisons possible, but their language totals do not guarantee equal testing depth. Microsoft Research’s review of multilingual, contextual evaluation reports that 36% of evaluated languages appear in only one benchmark, and that low-resource languages are evaluated across fewer task categories than high-resource languages. The finding points to a coverage problem: for many languages, there may be less public evidence across different kinds of capability.

Several benchmark projects illustrate why scope needs context. Their counts describe what each project covers, not proof that every language or task receives equal attention or that the models perform equally well.
| Study | Reported scope | What the scope can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| MuBench (2026) | 61 languages and 3.9 million samples; its authors also report human-expert evaluation of translation quality and cultural sensitivity on 34,000 samples. | It assesses multilingual capabilities at broad scale and includes a human-reviewed subset. A large total alone does not mean every language, task, or variety has equally deep coverage. |
| LaoBench (2026) | More than 17,000 expert-curated samples covering culturally grounded knowledge, K–12 education, and bilingual translation. | Its task areas show the value of language-specific and culturally grounded evaluation. The benchmark does not, by itself, establish general capability for every Lao use case. |
| MEGAVERSE (2024) | 83 languages across 22 datasets. | Its scope spans multiple languages and datasets; those totals do not establish equal representation or performance across them. |
These projects are not interchangeable leaderboards: they differ in purpose, tasks, and evaluation design. A result from one benchmark answers only the questions that its test items and scoring can support.
How can a benchmark make a comparison fairer?
A comparison is more informative when it controls for the content being tested while still checking whether the test is meaningful in each language. Translating the same questions across languages can align the subject matter, but translation alone does not make the phrasing, cultural assumptions, or difficulty identical. Native-language prompts and language-specific review can reveal issues that a translated test misses.
Before treating a score as evidence of broad multilingual ability, look for these details:
- Task: Is the score for translation, reasoning, question answering, fluency, speech, or another defined capability?
- Language variety: Which language, dialect, script, or register was evaluated? Does the result cover only one variety?
- Test construction: Were items translated from a shared source or authored independently in each language? Were they reviewed by people with relevant language expertise?
- Coverage: How many items and task categories represent each language? A language included once is not necessarily tested comprehensively.
- Scoring: Does the metric capture the quality that matters for the task? Accuracy may not reveal inconsistent answers across language versions or performance in mixed-language contexts.
- Contamination: Does the study address whether test material may have appeared in training data or been reused in earlier evaluations?
Mixed-language use needs special attention. MuBench reports that, in its experiments, increasing model size did not improve the ability to handle mixed-language contexts. That is a study-specific result, not evidence that scaling never helps; it does show why a model’s size should not substitute for a direct test of the behavior in question. The authors also emphasize consistency alongside accuracy, since matching answers across language versions can matter as well as getting an individual answer right.

How should you interpret a claim that a model supports many languages?
Treat “supports” as a starting point, then look for task- and language-specific evidence. A defensible claim should make clear whether coverage means the model accepts prompts in a language, produces output in it, or has been evaluated for a particular quality standard. Those are not equivalent levels of evidence.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a practical decision, ask for results in the languages and varieties your users actually need, on representative tasks. For example, evidence that a system translates a language pair does not establish that it can reliably answer local education questions in that language. Likewise, a fluent-sounding response is not enough to establish factual accuracy or cultural appropriateness.
Published scores should also be read with their limits attached: sample size, task, language variety, and review method. If these details are missing, the result may still be useful as a narrow signal, but it cannot justify a broad claim that performance is equal across languages.
What is the most accurate takeaway?
Multilinguality is not a single pass-or-fail property. It is a set of capabilities that can vary by language, task, data, and evaluation. Research documents disparities between English and lower-resource languages, but it does not support one universal ranking of all languages or a single explanation for every gap.
The strongest way to assess a multilingual claim is to follow the evidence down to the tested language variety, task, and benchmark design. Language counts describe reach; carefully designed, language-aware evaluations are what show how well a model works.
