Possibly, but it is not proven for continuous 24/7 streams. A large observational study of YouTube Live found a slight Sunday advantage overall, particularly on Sunday afternoons and early evenings. It did not isolate streams that ran around the clock, so weekend scheduling is a hypothesis to test with your own channel data—not a guaranteed way to gain viewers.
What the YouTube Live evidence actually shows
The YTLive study, “YTLive: A Dataset of Real-World YouTube Live Streaming Sessions,” analyzed 507,290 records sampled every five minutes from 12,156 YouTube Live streams during May and June 2024. The authors reported somewhat higher and more stable viewership on weekends, especially in afternoon hours. This is an observational snapshot from that period, not a current platform-wide forecast or a causal test of weekend scheduling. Read the YTLive study.

Sunday stood out, but the median difference was slight
The paper’s detailed analysis says median viewership did not strongly depend on day of week; it found only a slight increase in the median and quartiles on Sundays. Its hour-by-day analysis marked Sunday 11:00–19:00 as a higher-viewership window in the dataset, with a peak at 18:00. It also identified strong afternoon periods on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. These are sample patterns, not a universal best schedule.

The study does not prove a 24/7-stream weekend boost
The researchers grouped broadcasts by duration and reported that the weekend pattern appeared across short, medium, and long groups. But “long” does not mean continuously live, and the study did not estimate a separate weekend effect for streams running 24/7 throughout its collection period. It also does not provide a reliable percentage uplift to apply to an individual channel.

The study found shorter streams generally had higher and more consistent viewership, while longer streams were more variable. That makes raw total views a poor weekend-versus-weekday comparison for a continuous broadcast: a stream that runs more hours has more opportunities to accumulate views, regardless of how many people are watching at a given moment.
How to test weekends on your own channel
Use a matched comparison rather than assuming that a weekend rise in total views means the weekend caused it. Compare audience presence during equivalent hours and keep the time zone, metric, and content as consistent as you can.

- Choose a consistent metric. Compare average concurrent viewers as your main measure of typical audience, and track peak concurrent viewers separately. Do not use total views alone for a 24/7 stream.
- Match the hours. Compare the same clock hours in your audience’s main time zone on weekdays and weekends. If your audience spans time zones, choose the most relevant one or examine regions separately where your analytics allow it.
- Repeat across comparable weeks. A single weekend can be distorted by holidays, one-off events, promotion, content changes, raids, or outages. Record those factors instead of treating the result as a normal weekend pattern.
- Keep the content and measurement source comparable. Note changes to the playlist, title, thumbnail, promotion, stream uptime, or topic. Avoid mixing figures from different YouTube reporting surfaces without labeling them.
- Decide from your own pattern. If matched weekends repeatedly show stronger average concurrency, prioritize those hours or test weekend-specific programming. If the difference is inconsistent or absent, the study alone is not a reason to change your schedule.
Where to check concurrent viewers in YouTube
YouTube Studio Analytics provides average and peak concurrent-viewer metrics at video and channel levels. YouTube notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed, is based on Video ID, and can measure differently from Live Control Room data. Use one reporting source consistently for a comparison, and label whether you are looking at Studio Analytics or real-time Live Control Room figures. YouTube Analytics metrics.
