DNS Not Propagating After Adding Hosting? How to Fix It

When a domain does not point to new hosting, verify the active DNS zone and authoritative answer first. Then distinguish a configuration error from cached results, DNSSEC failure, or a local cache.

If your domain still shows the old site or will not load after you add hosting, first check which DNS change you made and where it is authoritative. Adding a hosting plan does not automatically point a domain to it. If the authoritative DNS record or nameserver delegation is wrong, correct it; if authoritative DNS is right but some resolvers still return the old answer, the old record’s time to live (TTL) may not have expired.

First identify what changed

A nameserver change and a DNS-record change are different operations. Changing nameservers at the registrar moves DNS authority to another provider. Changing an A, AAAA, or CNAME record updates a target inside the DNS zone currently in use. The first can fail because the registrar has not published the intended delegation; the second can fail because the wrong zone or record was edited.

Change you made What to check
Nameservers At the registrar, confirm the domain is delegated to the exact nameserver set assigned by the intended DNS provider. Check that the change was saved and any confirmation step completed. Cloudflare explains pending nameserver updates.
A, AAAA, or CNAME record Confirm the record was changed in the active DNS zone—the zone served by the domain’s authoritative nameservers—and that its target matches the value supplied in your hosting account. AWS’s DNS troubleshooting guide covers record and hosted-zone checks.

Check the authoritative DNS data

Find which nameservers are currently authoritative, then inspect the zone served by them. A provider may have more than one zone for the same domain; edits to a zone that is not attached to the domain will not affect visitors. Make sure the domain’s apex (for example, example.com) and www are both configured as needed. They are separate names and may need separate records.

Compare the current A or AAAA address, or CNAME target, with the exact target given by your hosting provider. Do not substitute an address found in an unrelated example: the correct value depends on your hosting account.

For a quick nameserver check, DigitalOcean documents this command:

dig +short your-domain.com NS

To query public recursive resolvers for a domain, Google’s Public DNS guide demonstrates:

dig example.test. @resolver1.opendns.com.
dig example.test. @dns.quad9.net.
dig example.test. @one.one.one.one.

Replace example.test. with your domain. You can also query the authoritative nameserver directly and compare its answer with these recursive resolvers and your local machine. These commands inspect DNS; they do not change it. Google Public DNS explains resolver comparisons and domain troubleshooting.

Compare the symptom with the DNS answers

What you see What to investigate
Authoritative answer is wrong Correct the record in the active zone, or correct the delegation if the domain points to the wrong nameservers. Waiting will not repair incorrect authoritative data.
Authoritative answer is right, but some public resolvers return an old address This usually indicates cached data. Check the TTL on the old answer and allow that cache to expire. Resolvers can update at different times.
Several public resolvers return similar failures Investigate the domain’s delegation and authoritative DNS service. Google notes that similar problems across other public resolvers are most likely to indicate an issue with the domain’s authoritative servers.
Lookups return NXDOMAIN or an old address Check that the domain is delegated correctly and that the expected name and record exist in the active zone. An old address at some resolvers may also be cached.
Lookups return SERVFAIL Check DNSSEC, especially after moving DNS providers. A DS record left at the registrar from the old provider can fail validation if the new provider’s DNSKEY data does not match.

Fix delegation, duplicate zones, or competing providers

Nameservers do not match the intended provider

Compare the nameservers published for the domain with the complete set assigned in the intended DNS provider’s account. Make sure the registrar change applies to the right domain and account and was actually submitted. A value entered in a control panel is not proof that the delegation was published.

Changes were made in an inactive zone

Use the zone associated with the authoritative nameservers, not simply the first zone visible in a hosting or DNS dashboard. If the provider has duplicate zones, update the one that is active or correct the delegation to use the intended zone.

More than one DNS provider is serving conflicting data

If two active nameserver sets or unsynchronized zones return different addresses, visitors can be sent to different destinations depending on which DNS path they reach. Delegate to the intended provider’s complete nameserver set, or deliberately keep every active zone synchronized. DigitalOcean’s domain-resolution guide discusses conflicting providers and delegation.

Check DNSSEC if the result is SERVFAIL

During a DNS-provider migration, a DS record at the registrar can continue pointing to the old DNSSEC keys. If the new DNS provider does not publish matching DNSKEY data, validating resolvers may reject the domain and return SERVFAIL. Check the delegation data with:

Cloudflare advises disabling DNSSEC before replacing nameservers in a full-setup migration, then enabling it again after the new zone is active with matching keys. Follow the instructions for both your registrar and DNS provider; do not leave DNSSEC disabled longer than needed. Cloudflare says cached stale DS records may take up to 24 hours to clear after removal, an operational estimate rather than a universal deadline. Cloudflare’s full-setup nameserver guide covers the migration sequence, and its pending nameserver guidance addresses stale DS caching.

Know when to wait—and what “propagation” means

“Propagation” is often shorthand for resolvers continuing to serve cached answers from before a DNS change. A resolver can keep an old answer until its TTL expires, while another resolver has already fetched the new one. That is why the same domain may appear to work on one network and fail or show an old site on another.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

There is no guaranteed global wait time. AWS says registrar nameserver TTLs are typically 24 to 48 hours in its Route 53 troubleshooting context and says a nameserver change can take up to two days in that context. These are provider-specific estimates, not a promise that every domain will resolve within that window. If authoritative data is still wrong, waiting will not help. AWS explains these timing considerations; cPanel also describes how resolver caches and TTLs affect old-IP results in its old-IP troubleshooting guide.

For a planned move, prepare the destination zone before switching traffic and keep the old service available while cached answers may still send visitors there. Namecheap recommends lowering an A-record TTL ahead of a planned move and allowing time before changing nameservers. Lowering the TTL after a resolver has already cached the old answer does not shorten that existing cache. Namecheap’s DNS propagation guide discusses local checks and planned migrations; AWS covers the limits of TTL changes after caching.

Clear a local cache only after checking public DNS

If public resolvers return the new answer but only one device still shows the old site, a browser or local resolver cache may be involved. Clearing local DNS or browser data can help test that device, but it cannot correct an incorrect registrar delegation, a bad authoritative record, or stale caches held by remote resolvers. Namecheap’s guide describes local cache checks and public DNS cache-flush tooling.
