For an archive you need to build and use today, cloud cold storage is the practical choice; DNA data storage remains an emerging technology, not a cost-competitive consumer substitute. DNA offers striking theoretical density and the possibility of long-lived physical storage, but current end-to-end capacity, write/read processes, and modeled costs are major constraints. Cloud archive services are available now, but their low storage rates come with restore workflows, retrieval and transfer charges, minimum retention periods, and other costs.
What DNA data storage is—and what its density figures mean
DNA storage encodes digital bits in synthetic DNA sequences. To retrieve the information, the DNA must be handled and sequenced, and the resulting data decoded. It is an archival research direction involving specialized physical and laboratory processes, not a drive you can browse or a cloud service you can restore with an API request.
A widely cited estimate of about one exabyte per cubic millimeter is a theoretical raw density, not demonstrated capacity for a complete working archive. The authors of the 2022 paper DNA Storage: A Promising Large Scale Archival Storage? distinguished that theoretical figure from the capacity of DNA tubes using the synthesis and sequencing technologies they examined, which they estimated at hundreds of gigabytes per tube. Those figures describe different things and should not be presented as equivalent system capacities.
Practical capacity depends on more than how much information DNA molecules could theoretically represent. A usable system must synthesize sequences, preserve and identify them, sequence them later, correct errors, and turn the results back into files. Each stage affects throughput, cost, and operational complexity.

How cloud cold storage retrieval works
Cloud archive tiers are usable services, but “stored” does not always mean immediately readable. The restore process, timing, and charges depend on the provider and tier.
Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive
AWS says archived objects are not directly accessible in real time. You submit a restore request, which creates a temporary copy for access; charges can include the restore request and storage for that temporary copy alongside the archived object. AWS documentation lists minimum storage durations of 90 days for S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval and 180 days for S3 Glacier Deep Archive. Its archive overview describes Flexible Retrieval as offering restores in minutes or bulk retrieval in 5–12 hours, and Deep Archive retrieval within twelve hours. These are provider service descriptions, not guarantees that every workload or individual restore will complete on a fixed schedule.

Google Cloud Storage Archive
Google documents retrieval fees for Archive, as well as for Nearline and Coldline. Archive retrieval fees can apply to reads, copies, moves, or rewrites, in addition to relevant operation and network charges. Rates depend on class and location, so use the official pricing for the intended region and workload rather than treating the storage rate as the total cost.
Azure Blob Archive
Azure Archive is an offline tier. A blob must be rehydrated before it can be read or downloaded; Microsoft says rehydration can take up to 15 hours, depending on priority. Microsoft Learn lists a 180-day minimum storage duration for the tier. Archive also supports a narrower set of redundancy configurations than online tiers.

Compare the complete archive, not just the storage medium
| Consideration | DNA storage | Cloud cold/archive storage |
|---|---|---|
| Availability today | An emerging archival research direction; not established here as a consumer-ready alternative. | Deployed services with documented archive tiers and restore workflows. |
| Capacity | About one exabyte per cubic millimeter is theoretical raw density. A 2022 study estimated hundreds of gigabytes per tube for the technologies it examined. | Capacity is provided as objects in cloud services; this evidence does not establish a comparable physical-density figure. |
| Access | Requires physical handling and sequencing before data can be decoded. | Ranges from delayed restoration to online access, depending on class. Archive tiers may require a restore or rehydration request. |
| Cost evidence | A 2026 preprint model estimates DNA costs would need to fall by eight to nine orders of magnitude to compete with current archival technologies under its modeled cost trajectories. This is a model result, not a measured universal price. | Storage rates are only one component; retrieval, requests, transfer, minimum duration, object overhead, and redundancy choices may affect the bill. |
| Integrity and resilience | Requires a complete plan for physical preservation, identification, sequencing, error correction, and recovery. | Provider durability design, redundancy configuration, availability, and a customer’s restore and recovery plan are distinct considerations. |
| Operational workflow | Depends on synthesis, physical custody, indexing, sequencing, decoding, and validation capabilities. | Uses provider APIs and restore or rehydration workflows, with service-specific timing and billing. |
Why the lowest monthly rate is not the lifecycle cost
A fair comparison needs a defined retention period, amount of data, access pattern, recovery target, and redundancy plan. For DNA, include encoding, synthesis, physical storage, integrity checks, copying, sequencing, decoding, and operational work. For cloud, include storage, requests, retrieval, restored-copy storage where applicable, network transfer, object or metadata overhead, minimum-duration or early-deletion charges, and the selected location and redundancy configuration.
Do not compare DNA’s theoretical physical holding density or a hypothetical low holding cost with only a cloud provider’s monthly storage line. The 2026 analysis by Alex El-Shaikh, An Economic Analysis of DNA-based Data Storage Systems, is a preprint whose eight-to-nine-orders-of-magnitude result depends on its modeled cost trajectories; it is not a price quote or settled universal forecast. Cloud charges vary by region, configuration, workload, and provider terms. A meaningful estimate should use live provider pricing for the relevant workload and make its assumptions explicit.

Durability, availability, and recoverability are different
Durability describes the chance that stored data remains intact over time; availability concerns whether a service can be accessed when needed; recoverability concerns whether an organization can locate, restore, validate, and use its records. None alone proves that an archive can be recovered successfully in a real incident.
Google Cloud documentation describes designed annual durability of at least 99.999999999% across its storage classes and explains its redundancy and integrity checks. That is a cloud-service durability statement, not a measure directly comparable to DNA’s potential material longevity. For either approach, plan for independent copies, integrity verification, identifiers and indexes, and a tested process to recover and validate the data.

Which approach fits your archive?
Choose a cloud archive tier when you need a service now
- Use access frequency and recovery deadlines to select a tier; the least expensive storage rate may not suit data that must be restored quickly.
- Estimate retrieval volume, request counts, transfer, restore or rehydration time, retention duration, and redundancy for the region you plan to use.
- Check the provider’s current service documentation and pricing before committing. AWS and Microsoft timing statements describe service options, while actual workflow and charges depend on the selected tier and configuration.
Treat DNA as a research or development possibility
DNA may be relevant to future archival systems where extreme density or long-term physical persistence could matter, but the theoretical density figure does not establish an available archive product or an economical end-to-end workflow. A serious evaluation would need demonstrated capacity and throughput, a costed write/read pipeline, error-correction and integrity procedures, and a credible plan for physical custody and eventual sequencing.
Make the decision against a recovery scenario
Write down how much data must be retained, for how long, how often and how much will be retrieved, and how quickly a recovery must finish. Then model full lifecycle costs and test the restore path. That comparison is more useful than ranking DNA and cloud by density or monthly storage price alone.
