The original DMZ and Warzone Battle Royale shared a Call of Duty setting, but their match goals were different: DMZ asked you to complete activities, collect items and extract alive; Battle Royale asked you to outlast the other players as the playable area shrank. This comparison covers the original DMZ beta introduced with Warzone 2.0 in 2022. A separate DMZ is planned for Modern Warfare 4 in 2026, so its announced features should not be assumed to describe the original mode.
What’s the difference between DMZ and Warzone?
In the original DMZ, a successful deployment meant leaving the map alive with whatever eligible items you had collected. You could choose among missions and other activities rather than pursue one shared win condition. In Warzone Battle Royale, the objective was to survive the match and its shrinking circle until you won.

Choose what to do
DMZ did not require every squad to follow the same route toward a single final victory. You could pursue faction missions and other activities while exploring the map. That freedom made the deployment feel less like a conventional round-based contest: your own objectives shaped what counted as a productive run.

Collect items, then reach exfil
The defining decision was whether to keep gathering loot or leave with what you had. Items carried in the backpack could persist for later use if you successfully exfiltrated. Extraction was therefore part of the objective, not just a way to end a match.
Accept the risk of losing a run
If you died before extraction, nonpermanent items in the backpack were lost. The combination of valuable carry-over loot and the possibility of losing it gave encounters and the trip to an exfil point their tension. Activision’s original DMZ overview describes this extraction-focused design.

Is DMZ like Battle Royale?
They shared the Warzone setting and some launch-era systems, but those overlaps did not make the modes’ overall loops the same. DMZ mixed human opponents with AI enemies and let squads pursue different tasks; Battle Royale centered on winning a survival contest against other players as the circle collapsed.
Proximity chat and Strongholds appeared in both at launch, with mode-specific uses and objectives. Strongholds were not a reason to describe Battle Royale as fully PvE: the central contest remained survival against players. For the original Battle Royale structure, see the Warzone 2.0 guide.

Do you keep your loot in DMZ?
In the original beta, eligible items collected in your backpack could carry forward when you successfully exfiltrated. Dying removed nonpermanent backpack contents, so keeping loot depended on getting out alive. This is a description of the original mode’s launch-era rules, not a promise about the new DMZ announced for 2026.
Which mode should you play?
- Choose the original DMZ’s style if varied missions, exploration, mixed AI and player threats, and the risk-reward choice of extracting with loot appeal to you.
- Choose Battle Royale’s style if you want a direct competition where the shrinking circle drives the match toward a last-team-standing result.
The choice is less about which mode has more action than what kind of goal you want: build a run around tasks and extraction, or focus on surviving a match to win.

What does the 2026 DMZ announcement change?
“DMZ” now refers to more than one iteration. The original Warzone 2.0 beta is distinct from the DMZ planned to launch alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 later in 2026. In a June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot called DMZ “an action extraction shooter.” He described the forthcoming version as having persistent inventory, an upgradeable Forward Operating Base (FOB), interactive stations and character progression over multiple deployments.
Those are announced design details for the forthcoming version, not independently verified final release features, and they should not be retroactively applied to the original beta. The original sources describe historical design; they do not establish whether the legacy mode is currently downloadable or supported on every platform.
