DMZ is an extraction mode built around completing objectives, gathering loot, and getting out alive. In the original Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 DMZ, death could cost you the nonpermanent items in your backpack, so staying longer to pursue more loot also meant accepting more risk. A new DMZ is announced for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but its detailed gear, contract, and extraction rules have not yet been confirmed. This guide separates the original mode’s documented mechanics from features announced for the upcoming game, as of October 7, 2026.
How do you survive in DMZ?
In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, you selected faction missions before deploying to Al Mazrah, then pursued those missions and optional activities, collected valuables, and tried to extract. Activision described it as a single-life mode: if you were eliminated, nonpermanent items carried in your backpack could be lost. The practical choice was whether to leave with what you had or stay longer for more objectives and loot. More time could also mean more exposure to threats and a greater chance of losing carried items. That is a trade-off implied by the documented loss and extraction rules, not a tested optimal strategy.

What threats should you expect?
Activision’s overview of the original Al Mazrah mode named enemy Operators, AI combatants, sandstorms, and radiation as threats. Other squads might be pursuing different tasks, so encounters with players were another source of uncertainty. The official overview does not establish that this exact hazard list applies to the new Hajin mode.

What gear did the original DMZ use?
In the original mode, the backpack carried weapons, equipment, cash, and valuables. Items you found had to be placed in it manually. Activision’s Season 03 update in 2023 described additional backpack and equipment options; these are historical, version-specific details, not confirmed rules for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. How did contracts and missions work?
In the original mode, faction missions were selected before a match. Contracts, world events, and locations offered additional activities during a deployment. The Season 03 update also introduced a Supply Run contract and barter recipes at Buy Stations. Those details belong to that 2023 update and should not be assumed to carry over to Hajin.

When should you extract?
In the original DMZ, players could call a helicopter at marked exfil locations. Activision also described a final exfil after the marked opportunities had been used; players who were left behind became MIA. The rules made timing important: waiting might allow more objectives, but missing the available exits could put the entire carried load at risk.
The original overview documents those extraction mechanics, but the reviewed official materials do not provide an extraction ruleset for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. Do not assume that its exits, timing, or consequences will match the older mode.

What is confirmed about the new DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?
As of October 7, 2026, Activision says the new DMZ takes place in Hajin and combines “narrative-driven Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player-driven encounters, and match-to-match progression inside a volatile battleground where every deployment matters.” The quotation is from Call of Duty Staff’s official intel hub, dated October 5, 2026. Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The date is a scheduled release, not evidence that the game or its DMZ mode is already playable on October 7. Activision’s June 6, 2026 deep dive says more DMZ intel is forthcoming. The announced features establish the setting and broad activity types, but the available official descriptions do not provide a complete contract list, detailed gear statistics, reward values, or extraction rules. Treat those specifics as unconfirmed until Activision publishes them.
