Which DMZ you mean matters. In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, extracted items went to Storage, while dying generally cost the contents of your Backpack. The separate Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, scheduled for October 23, 2026, is still prelaunch as of October 7, 2026: developers say rank XP persists through death and unlocks FOB stations, stash items, and printer recipes, but its complete item-loss and seasonal-reset rules have not been established.
First, identify which DMZ you’re playing
“DMZ” now refers to two distinct systems. The original mode was part of Warzone 2.0 and its documented rules belong to 2022–2023 seasons. A new DMZ is scheduled to arrive with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026. The new mode has not launched as of October 7, 2026, so its developers’ prelaunch descriptions should not be treated as a complete live-game rulebook. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ: what progression persists and what it unlocks
The clearest prelaunch distinction is between rank progression and the gear you carry. Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot told Xbox Wire that rank XP is not cut when an operator dies: “Even if you die, we’re not giving you half XP, nothing like that.” That XP unlocks Forward Operating Base (FOB) stations, stash items, and 3D-printer recipes. It does not, by itself, establish what happens to every carried item after death. Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026.
FOB rank progression
The FOB is the between-deployment hub described by the developers. Rank unlocks new stations and other progression rewards, including items for the stash and recipes used by the printer. Windows Central reported a progression track reaching level 70, but that is a prelaunch secondary report, not a final launch specification. Windows Central, October 5, 2026.
Operator progression and the Boss Board
The developers describe persistent backpacks, loadouts, and trait trees tied to individual operators, with growth intended to carry across deployments. Cecot gave the example of earning cash with a backup operator to rescue a lost character and continue that character’s progression. The interview does not provide a definitive rescue-cost formula or a complete list of what an operator loses on death, so the example should not be read as a guaranteed item-retention rule. The FOB’s Boss Board tracks lieutenants killed during the season; squads use dog-tag cases to populate it, creating an objective other teams can contest in a match. Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026.
How the new DMZ separates cash, weapons, and crafted gear
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ’s prelaunch description separates weapon building from equipment crafting. Cash found during missions and operations is wired to the FOB and funds weapon construction. Players can purchase attachments they have unlocked; the cost rises as they add more attachments, and some attachment types cost more than others. Cecot summarized the system this way: “In Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ, Gunsmith is driven by the cash that you find in game.” Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026.

Weapon construction uses cash
Cash is the stated resource for building guns and equipping unlocked attachments. The prelaunch interview does not give a complete price list, attachment costs, or a final explanation of how cash is handled after every kind of death.

The printer consumes components found in the world. Recipes can unlock specific gear to print or upgrade the printer itself. Rank XP unlocks recipes, but the ingredients are a separate requirement: an unlocked recipe does not mean the needed components are already in hand. Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026.

What the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ kept or cost on death
In the original mode, extraction was the way to bank what you collected. Call of Duty’s launch overview says extracted cash, weapons, and other items went into Storage for later use. Dying generally meant losing Backpack items. Weapon blueprints were the exception: after death, they became unavailable for a period—usually a few hours—rather than being permanently lost. These are original-mode launch rules, not confirmed rules for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. Call of Duty, November 14, 2022.
Season 03: Active Duty Operators and Secure Backpacks
Season 03 added three Active Duty Operator slots, each with its own on-soldier gear, so players could choose a different equipped operator for a run. Secure Backpacks protected eligible items that were not contraband or on-soldier gear: those items stayed in inventory between runs and remained with that Active Duty Operator if eliminated. Season 04: FOB upgrades, Wallet, and a documented reset
In the original mode’s Season 04, passive FOB upgrade objectives unlocked improvements such as insured weapon slots, greater Wallet capacity, stash increases, personal exfil, barter recipes, Buy Station discounts, and access to urgent missions. The Wallet let players extract and store cash outside the exclusion zone to use on a later infiltration. Call of Duty, Season 04, June 2023.

That update also documented a reset of faction mission progress and DMZ inventory: contraband returned to starting weapons, keys and mission inventory were emptied, and faction progress and earlier insured-slot unlocks were reset. Earned blueprint unlocks and earlier mission or boss rewards remained, except for contraband and keys. These details describe that specific Season 04 reset; they do not establish what a later season or the new DMZ will reset. Call of Duty, Season 04, June 2023.

What is still unknown about the new DMZ
The available prelaunch descriptions do not settle the full item-by-item outcome when an operator dies, the exact rescue cost, or whether rank rewards, operator traits, stash contents, and other unlocks carry across seasons. They also do not confirm a complete seasonal reset policy. In particular, the original mode’s Backpack losses, Secure Backpack protection, insured weapon slots, Wallet, and faction reset should not be assumed to apply to Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. Check official launch documentation and subsequent patch notes for those rules once the mode is available.
