DLSS 5 will not automatically appear in every older game that already supports DLSS 4. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a new neural-rendering feature for lighting and material effects that requires game-developer integration. DLSS 4, by contrast, is a collection of image-reconstruction and frame-generation features. NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 for fall 2026 and named some games, but has not promised a blanket update for its DLSS back catalog.
What is the difference between DLSS 4 and DLSS 5?
They address different parts of rendering. DLSS 4 is a suite of features that can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a rendered frame, reduce aliasing, reconstruct ray-traced effects, or generate additional frames. DLSS 5 is described by NVIDIA as a real-time neural model that uses a game’s color and motion-vector data to add lighting and material effects while staying anchored to the game’s 3D content.

| Technology | What it does | How it reaches games |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS 4 / 4.5 Super Resolution | Reconstructs the image; NVIDIA says DLSS 4 uses transformer-based Super Resolution, while DLSS 4.5 updates its models. | Can be integrated by a game or, for supported games and apps, applied through NVIDIA App overrides. |
| DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation | Generates additional frames to increase displayed frame rate. | Requires game support; DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is powered by RTX 50 Series GPUs. |
| DLSS 5 | Adds neural lighting and material effects using frame color and motion vectors; NVIDIA says developers can control intensity, color grading, and masking. | Requires developer integration through NVIDIA’s Streamline framework; it is not described as a universal driver override. |
These features are not interchangeable: image reconstruction, generated frames, and neural lighting affect different aspects of the result. A game may support one DLSS feature without supporting the others. NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 announcement and its DLSS technology overview describe the respective approaches.
Will DLSS 5 work with older games?
Some older games may receive DLSS 5, but existing DLSS 4 support alone does not establish compatibility. NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 announcement describes developer integration and names selected titles; it does not say every older DLSS-enabled game will be updated.

Games NVIDIA has named
The announcement includes already released or remastered games such as Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. It also names newer or upcoming games, including Resident Evil Requiem, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Where Winds Meet. These are announced examples, not a complete or final compatibility list. The announcement does not establish a broad back-catalog rollout or specify the DLSS 5 implementation details for each game.
NVIDIA said DLSS 5 was expected in fall 2026. Until a specific game’s developer or NVIDIA confirms support and publishes release details, treat compatibility as unknown rather than assuming an existing DLSS 4 feature will carry over. Check that game’s update announcements and graphics settings as availability changes.

What can you use in older games now?
DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution has a separate, broader route in supported titles: NVIDIA App overrides. NVIDIA’s January 5, 2026 guide describes selecting the app’s Graphics tab and using DLSS Override settings to choose newer model presets. NVIDIA said at that time that DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution was available across more than 400 games and apps. An override changes the Super Resolution model in a supported game; it does not add DLSS 5 lighting or establish that the game has native DLSS 5 integration.

- Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
- Select a supported game or app, then open its DLSS Override settings.
- Choose an available model preset and apply the setting. The exact options depend on the game and installed GPU.
NVIDIA’s guide also says RTX 50 Series owners can enable Multi Frame Generation in games that support DLSS Frame Generation. That setting is distinct from a Super Resolution model override. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 guide has the dated instructions and its compatibility context.

Do you need a new graphics card for DLSS 5?
Not on the evidence NVIDIA has published in its March 16, 2026 announcement: it does not specify DLSS 5’s minimum GPU requirements, whether a particular RTX generation is mandatory, or the performance cost. Do not treat an RTX 50 Series card as a confirmed DLSS 5 requirement.
There is a firm distinction for existing features: NVIDIA says DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is powered by GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Its January 2026 DLSS 4.5 article describes Super Resolution as available to all GeForce RTX gamers. The GPU requirement for Multi Frame Generation should not be generalized to Super Resolution—or assumed to apply to DLSS 5. See NVIDIA’s RTX Blackwell architecture information for the hardware context.

How should you judge compatibility claims?
- Look for the exact feature. “DLSS support” may mean Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, or another feature; it does not identify DLSS 5 support by itself.
- Look for the exact game. A named DLSS 5 title is evidence for that title, not for all games on the same engine or the full DLSS back catalog.
- Separate native support from an override. NVIDIA App model overrides can update Super Resolution in supported games; DLSS 5 is described as requiring developer integration.
- Compare more than displayed frame rate. Reconstruction, generated frames, and lighting changes affect different outcomes, including image quality and responsiveness. NVIDIA’s announcement does not provide independent comparative tests or a game-by-game performance-cost figure.
Counts published by NVIDIA also describe different scopes and dates: on March 16, 2026, NVIDIA said more than 750 games had integrated DLSS; in its January 5, 2026 article it reported over 400 games and apps supporting DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and over 250 supporting DLSS 4. These are NVIDIA’s own reported counts, not an independent audit or a like-for-like comparison.
