DJI Fly app changes that affect camera and flight modes
DJI Fly updates often change UI, control limits, camera workflows, or supported feature sets. Sometimes a feature appears “gone” simply because a minimum app version is required.
Controller compatibility changes
If you fly with a DJI RC, DJI RC-N1, or another supported controller path, you may need a matching controller firmware or app version to keep telemetry and flight modes working correctly.
Before You Update: Prerequisites and Safety Checks
Before applying any DJI update, do these checks so you don’t interrupt the process or end up with mismatched versions.
Confirm your hardware basics
- DJI Mini 3 battery level: aim for at least 50% on the aircraft and the controller device you’ll use.
- Storage: keep an empty space cushion on your phone/tablet (DJI Fly may temporarily store update components).
- Memory card: use a reputable microSD card and ensure it’s seated firmly.
Use stable power and connectivity
- Update with a reliable Wi‑Fi connection if you’re using the phone-based DJI Fly path.
- During the update, keep devices plugged in where possible (or at least avoid low-battery scenarios).
- For tethered safety, don’t fly right after an update—test on the ground first.
Know your baseline specs
For context, the DJI Mini 3 is rated for up to 38 minutes of max flight time and records up to 4K/60fps. After any “big change,” it’s normal to re-check whether flight time estimates and warnings are behaving as expected.

How to Confirm Exactly What Changed on Your DJI Mini 3
The biggest mistake owners make is assuming the update did a single thing. Instead, verify the exact firmware/app version and read the release notes tied to it.
Check aircraft firmware version
- Open the DJI Fly app (or the controller interface, depending on your setup).
- Connect the aircraft and power on the controller.
- Go to the device info pages (commonly labeled About, Device, or Firmware).
- Record the Aircraft Firmware version shown.
Check controller and app versions
- In DJI Fly, look for your App version number (often under a Me or profile/settings area).
- If using DJI RC or DJI RC-N1, confirm the controller firmware version in the controller’s system info menu.
- If the app version changed but the aircraft firmware didn’t (or vice versa), note that mismatch as a potential cause of new behavior.
Read the release notes before you blame the drone
When you update, DJI typically provides a changelog. Save a screenshot of the release notes that mention flight controller behavior, safety, camera, or geofencing.
Update Paths (Pick Your Setup)

- Power on the DJI Mini 3 and controller, then open DJI Fly.
- Make sure the drone connects normally (live camera feed is stable).
- In DJI Fly, go to Me > Firmware Update (wording may vary slightly).
- Select the aircraft update if prompted, then follow the on-screen steps.
- Keep the aircraft powered and avoid closing the app during the download/installation phase.
- When the update finishes, power cycle the aircraft/controller if prompted.
Android (DJI Fly app)
Android updates work similarly, but device storage and permissions can affect the download stage.
- Connect the aircraft and open DJI Fly on your Android phone/tablet.
- Confirm the live view is stable (avoid updating if the connection is constantly reconnecting).
- Go to Me > Firmware Update and check for available updates.
- Start the update and keep the device charged.
- If the update stalls, try switching networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data) only if DJI Fly requires it and your connection is stable.
Using DJI RC or DJI RC-N1 Controller
If you fly with a controller that can handle updates directly, you’ll usually avoid phone compatibility issues.
- Power on the controller and connect the DJI Mini 3.
- On the controller, open the system/app menu and find Firmware or Update.
- Check for aircraft updates and install them from the controller.
- Reboot the aircraft/controller if the controller requests it.
After the Update: Required Settings and Test Flight Checklist
Once updated, you want to confirm the change doesn’t alter your expected behavior. Do this in a controlled area.
Camera and gimbal sanity check (before takeoff)
- Confirm the gimbal responds smoothly and doesn’t show jitter during pan/tilt.
- Record a short clip in your normal resolution mode (commonly 4K) to verify frame rate selection behaves correctly.
- Review playback immediately to ensure the update didn’t affect storage formatting or codec selection.
Flight controls and safety prompts
- Check basic flight mode availability in DJI Fly (or controller screen).
- Verify RTH altitude is set to the level you actually use. If you changed RTH earlier, don’t assume it stayed the same.
- Ensure compass status and GNSS indicators show normal readiness.
Ground test: hover and response
- Take off slowly and hover at a safe height (use a low altitude—think “control verification,” not range testing).
- Test gentle yaw, pitch, roll inputs, and check for any drift or unexpected responsiveness.
- Do a controlled descent and land. Only after this step should you attempt longer flights.
Troubleshooting When the Update or New Behavior Fails
If things feel “off” after the big change, don’t guess. Use a structured approach so you isolate whether the issue is firmware mismatch, calibration, or a settings change.

Update won’t start or keeps failing
- Restart the controller/phone and try again.
- Verify sufficient battery on both aircraft and controller device.
- Switch Wi‑Fi networks or use a different phone/tablet if the download repeatedly errors.
- Confirm you’re not running an outdated DJI Fly app—an app downgrade can block installation or cause “version conflict” behavior.
Gimbal/camera issues after update
- Reboot the aircraft and controller.
- Re-check camera settings (frame rate, resolution, and storage format).
- If the gimbal calibration is suggested by the system, follow the prompt before flying further.
GPS mode, compass, or controller link instability
- Test in an open area away from metal structures and large electronics.
- If you see persistent compass warnings, perform the compass calibration only when the app/controller requests it and you’re in a safe spot.
- Check whether the update changed signal-related thresholds—your behavior may look different, but it should still stabilize under normal conditions.
Return-to-Home (RTH) behavior feels different
RTH changes are the most important “big change” category because it affects safety.
- Verify RTH altitude is what you expect.
- Perform a low-risk RTH test in a safe area (avoid doing this in complex terrain).
- Confirm wind conditions; strong gusts can make RTH feel more aggressive or less predictable.
Battery warnings and flight-time changes
- Review warning messages carefully; an update may adjust thresholds for “low battery” prompts.
- Calibrate your expectations by doing a short series of flights, not one long session.
- If battery performance suddenly drops, check for damage and consider retiring a worn pack.
Common Mistakes Mini 3 Owners Make During/After Updates
- Skipping version checks: if app and firmware don’t match DJI’s expectations, features can behave oddly.
- Updating right before a job without a test flight.
- Ignoring RTH altitude: after some updates, RTH settings may revert or prompt you again.
- Flying in a bad calibration environment: metal, cars, and construction scaffolding can create repeated warnings.
- Assuming the drone is broken when it’s actually a settings change (camera format, flight mode availability, or safety prompt behavior).
Alternatives if You Need Stability Right Now
If the “big change” is currently causing uncertainty for your workflow, you can pause further experimentation while you gather evidence.
- Keep flights short until you’re confident the new behavior matches your expectations.
- Document settings (RTH altitude, camera resolution/frame rate, and flight mode preferences) so you can compare after each update.
- Use a controlled environment for your first post-update test—open fields and consistent lighting help isolate unexpected behavior.
FAQs
How do I know if the change affects flight safety features?
Check DJI Fly or the controller update notes for items mentioning RTH, GNSS/GPS, obstacle behavior, geofencing, or safety prompts. Those are the highest-impact categories.
Will my camera settings reset after updating?
Sometimes. Always verify resolution and frame rate after the update, then do a 10–20 second recording to confirm the codec and storage workflow are correct.

Do I need to recalibrate compasses after every DJI update?
Not automatically. Recalibrate only when the system requests it or when you get persistent compass-related warnings outside of normal calibration conditions.
Why does my Mini 3 feel different right after updating?
Updated control/safety logic or changed threshold behavior can alter responsiveness or how quickly the drone transitions to stable flight. A short controlled hover test will confirm whether it’s normal.
Bottom Line
A big DJI change for the DJI Mini 3 is usually manageable—but only if you validate what changed, update with stable power and connectivity, and run a short post-update test. Treat RTH and safety prompts as first-class checks, not afterthoughts.
